Evaluation of auditory brainstem implant (ABI) users' auditory behavior in everyday life.

PURPOSE: This study aims to evaluate the everyday listening status of pediatric ABI users using the Turkish ABEL questionnaire. METHODS: The study included 33 parents of children with auditory brainstem implant, and 28 parents of children with cochlear implant were included as a control group. All implant users were between the ages of 4-14. Parents answered the ABEL questionnaire to assess their child's auditory behavior in their daily living environment. In addition, Categories of Auditory Performance (CAP) and Speech Intelligibility Rating (SIR) scales were used to evaluate speech percepti

Comprehensive management of bilateral acoustic neuromas. Current perspectives.

Bilateral acoustic neuromas are pathognomonic for neurofibromatosis 2. Patients with neurofibromatosis 2 present complex and challenging management problems, because growth or surgical removal of the acoustic neuroma may result in total hearing loss. Early diagnosis with gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging and refinements in hearing preservation surgery have improved our ability to prevent total hearing loss. For patients with larger tumors or no useful hearing, the auditory brain-stem implant allows restoration of some auditory function when the tumor is removed. We describe our ma

Hearing implants in pediatrics with cochlear nerve deficiency: an updated systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) accounts for about one-third of congenital hearing loss cases and presents several challenges during management. Currently, cochlear implant (CI) and auditory brainstem implants (ABI) represent the primary management options for CND. However, robust evidence on the outcomes of different CND management approaches remains limited. Therefore, this systematic review seeks to update and assess the effectiveness of various CND management approaches. DATABASES REVIEWED: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL databases. METHODS: We conducted an online

The experience of auditory implant recipients undergoing magnetic resonance imaging: Factors associated with pain.

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with cochlear implants (CI) and auditory brainstem implants (ABI) require magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following implantation. This study explores the patient experience of MRI, identifying factors associated with pain, and the effect of interventions designed to enhance comfort and safety. METHODS: A prospective observational case series from a tertiary referral unit. Tight head bandaging ± local anaesthetic injection (devices with non-MRI-compatible magnets) or observation alone (implants with MRI-compatible magnets) were employed for 1.5 T MRI of consecutive ad

Auditory Brainstem Implants-Hearing Restoration in Congenitally Deaf Children.

BACKGROUND: Children who are born deaf can learn to hear and to speak with the aid of a cochlear implant (CI). If the implantation of a CI is not possible for anatomical reasons, an auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is the only surgical option for auditory rehabilitation. It is estimated that about 5 to 45 children could potentially benefit from this treatment in Germany each year. In this article, we present and discuss the current state of the scientific evidence. METHODS: The PubMed and Embase databases were searched for relevant publications from 2010 onward. 15 articles reporting at least

Word characteristics and speech production accuracy in children with auditory brainstem implants: a longitudinal triple case report.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABI) in children in the first years of life is a recent innovation. Analyses of their speech and language development on the basis of spontaneous language samples are still largely lacking. The aim was to investigate the phonological complexity of the words children with ABI use in their spontaneous speech, and to compare their accuracy with that of children with cochlear implants (CI) and children with normal hearing (NH). Longitudinal recordings of spontaneous speech were collected of three children with ABI. Children with ABI target mainly words of low phonologi

Short-term overstimulation affects peripheral but not central excitability in an animal model of cochlear implantation.

Objective: Upper current limits (C-levels) are sometimes extremely increased over time since this procedure can enhance speech perception. It should be clarified if a larger amount of electrical stimulation is tolerated by the remaining peripheral and central auditory pathway.Materials and Methods: An animal electrode array was inserted in mechanically deafened guinea pigs. C-levels were adjusted to a mean of approximately 10 CL ('LOS' group), 40 CL ('MOS' group) or 60 CL ('HOS' group) above the electrode specific electrically evoked compound action potential (eCAP) threshold. The stimulation

Microstructured thin-film electrode technology enables proof of concept of scalable, soft auditory brainstem implants.

Auditory brainstem implants (ABIs) provide sound awareness to deaf individuals who are not candidates for the cochlear implant. The ABI electrode array rests on the surface of the cochlear nucleus (CN) in the brainstem and delivers multichannel electrical stimulation. The complex anatomy and physiology of the CN, together with poor spatial selectivity of electrical stimulation and inherent stiffness of contemporary multichannel arrays, leads to only modest auditory outcomes among ABI users. Here, we hypothesized that a soft ABI could enhance biomechanical compatibility with the curved CN surfa

Auditory brainstem implant (ABI): new frontiers in adults and children.

UNLABELLED: Previous studies have considered only patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) older than 12 years as candidates for an auditory brainstem implant (ABI). Our study expands the potential criteria to include both children and adult subjects with other cochlear or cochlear nerve malfunctions who either would not benefit at all from a cochlear implant (eg, cochlear nerve aplasia or avulsion) or whose benefit was or would be severely compromised (eg, cochlear ossification, cochlear fracture). STUDY DESIGN: In our department, over the period from April 1997 to September 2002, 29 pat

Chronic Electro-Acoustic Stimulation May Interfere With Electric Threshold Recovery After Cochlear Implantation in the Aged Guinea Pig.

OBJECTIVES: Electro-acoustic stimulation (EAS) combines electric stimulation via a cochlear implant (CI) with residual low-frequency acoustic hearing, with benefits for music appreciation and speech perception in noise. However, many EAS CI users lose residual acoustic hearing, reducing this benefit. The main objectives of this study were to determine whether chronic EAS leads to more hearing loss compared with CI surgery alone in an aged guinea pig model, and to assess the relationship of any hearing loss to histology measures. Conversely, it is also important to understand factors impacting

Effects of phase duration and pulse rate on loudness and pitch percepts in the first auditory midbrain implant patients: Comparison to cochlear implant and auditory brainstem implant results.

The auditory midbrain implant (AMI), which is designed for stimulation of the inferior colliculus (IC), is now in clinical trials. The AMI consists of a single shank array (20 contacts) and uses a stimulation strategy originally designed for cochlear implants since it is already approved for human use and we do not yet know how to optimally activate the auditory midbrain. The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different pulse rates and phase durations on loudness and pitch percepts because these parameters are required to implement the AMI stimulation strategy. Although each

Historical Aspects of Inner Ear Anatomy and Biology that Underlie the Design of Hearing and Balance Prosthetic Devices.

This review presents some of the major historical events that advanced the body of knowledge of the anatomy of the inner ear and its sensory receptors as well as the biology of these receptors that underlies the sensory functions of hearing and balance. This knowledge base of the inner ear's structure/function has been an essential factor for the design and construction of prosthetic devices to aid patients with deficits in their senses of hearing and balance. Prosthetic devices are now available for severely hearing impaired and deaf patients to restore hearing and are known as cochlear impla
