The role of the prefrontal cortex in self-consciousness: the case of auditory hallucinations.

Many patients with schizophrenia report hallucinations in which they hear voices talking to them or about them. Behavioural and physiological studies show that this experience is associated with processes occurring in auditory language systems associated with both the production and the reception of speech. I propose that hallucinations are experienced because patients have difficulty in distinguishing sensations caused by their own actions from those that arise from external influences. This distinction can be made by predicting the sensations that will result from executive commands (forward

Conditioned blink reflex and neuronal activity in the auditory cortex of the cat.

The present study is concerned with conditioned reflex changes in background and evoked activity of the neuronal population of the auditory cortex (AI) in three waking cats. For the elaboration of a conditioned blink reflex, a series of eight clicks was used as the signal. The unconditional stimulus was rhythmic blowing of air at the eye. During the elaboration of a positive conditioned reflex there was a significant increase in the level of background activity. During conditioned reflex extinction, background activity showed a further increase. When extinguishing inhibition became profound, i

Decreased Modulation of Population Correlations in Auditory Cortex Is Associated with Decreased Auditory Detection Performance in Old Mice.

Age-related hearing loss (presbycusis) affects one-third of the world's population. One hallmark of presbycusis is difficulty hearing in noisy environments. Presbycusis can be separated into two components: the aging ear and the aging brain. To date, the role of the aging brain in presbycusis is not well understood. Activity in the primary auditory cortex (A1) during a behavioral task is because of a combination of responses representing the acoustic stimuli, attentional gain, and behavioral choice. Disruptions in any of these aspects can lead to decreased auditory processing. To investigate h

Degraded auditory processing in a rat model of autism limits the speech representation in non-primary auditory cortex.

Although individuals with autism are known to have significant communication problems, the cellular mechanisms responsible for impaired communication are poorly understood. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant that is a known risk factor for autism in prenatally exposed children. Prenatal VPA exposure in rats causes numerous neural and behavioral abnormalities that mimic autism. We predicted that VPA exposure may lead to auditory processing impairments which may contribute to the deficits in communication observed in individuals with autism. In this study, we document auditory cortex respo

Long-term training alters response dynamics in the aging auditory cortex.

Age-related auditory dysfunction, presbycusis, is caused in part by functional changes in the auditory cortex (ACtx) such as altered response dynamics and increased population correlations. Given the ability of cortical function to be altered by training, we tested if performing auditory tasks might benefit auditory function in old age. We examined this by training adult mice on a low-effort tone-detection task for at least six months and then investigated functional responses in ACtx at an older age (∼18 months). Task performance remained stable well into old age. Comparing sound-evoked respo

Chronic stress induced loudness hyperacusis, sound avoidance and auditory cortex hyperactivity.

Hyperacusis, a debilitating loudness intolerance disorder, has been linked to chronic stress and adrenal insufficiency. To investigate the role of chronic stress, rats were chronically treated with corticosterone (CORT) stress hormone. Chronic CORT produced behavioral evidence of loudness hyperacusis, sound avoidance hyperacusis, and abnormal temporal integration of loudness. CORT treatment did not disrupt cochlear or brainstem function as reflected by normal distortion product otoacoustic emissions, compound action potentials, acoustic startle reflexex, and auditory brainstem responses. Acoustic deprivation modulates central gain in human auditory brainstem and cortex.

Beyond reduced audibility, there is convincing evidence that the auditory system adapts according to the principles of homeostatic plasticity in response to a hearing loss. Such compensatory changes include modulation of central auditory gain mechanisms. Earplugging is a common experimental method that has been used to introduce a temporary, reversible hearing loss that induces changes consistent with central gain modulation. In the present study, young, normal-hearing adult participants wore a unilateral earplug for two weeks, during which we measured changes in the acoustic reflex threshold

Predicting neuronal response properties from hemodynamic responses in the auditory cortex.

Recent functional MRI (fMRI) studies have highlighted differences in responses to natural sounds along the rostral-caudal axis of the human superior temporal gyrus. However, due to the indirect nature of the fMRI signal, it has been challenging to relate these fMRI observations to actual neuronal response properties. To bridge this gap, we present a forward model of the fMRI responses to natural sounds combining a neuronal model of the auditory cortex with physiological modeling of the hemodynamic BOLD response. Neuronal responses are modeled with a dynamic recurrent firing rate model, reflect

Congenital deafness affects deep layers in primary and secondary auditory cortex.

Congenital deafness leads to functional deficits in the auditory cortex for which early cochlear implantation can effectively compensate. Most of these deficits have been demonstrated functionally. Furthermore, the majority of previous studies on deafness have involved the primary auditory cortex; knowledge of higher-order areas is limited to effects of cross-modal reorganization. In this study, we compared the cortical cytoarchitecture of four cortical areas in adult hearing and congenitally deaf cats (CDCs): the primary auditory field A1, two secondary auditory fields, namely the dorsal zone

Multitarget surgical neuromodulation: Combined C2 and auditory cortex implantation for tinnitus.

Tinnitus, as a phantom sound can express itself as a pure tone and as a noise-like sound. It is notoriously difficult to treat, and in medically, psychologically and audiologically intractable tinnitus patients sometimes intracranial electrodes overlying the auditory cortex are implanted. In this case report, we describe a patient who had a complete resolution of the pure tone component of his tinnitus by an auditory cortex implant, without any beneficial effect on the noise-like aspect of his tinnitus, even after changing the stimulation design to burst stimulation, which is known to treat no

Dynamic representation of spectral edges in guinea pig primary auditory cortex.

The central representation of a given acoustic motif is thought to be strongly context dependent, i.e., to rely on the spectrotemporal past and present of the acoustic mixture in which it is embedded. The present study investigated the cortical representation of spectral edges (i.e., where stimulus energy changes abruptly over frequency) and its dependence on stimulus duration and depth of the spectral contrast in guinea pig. We devised a stimulus ensemble composed of random tone pips with or without an attenuated frequency band (AFB) of variable depth. Additionally, the multitone ensemble wit

Auditory cortex tACS and tRNS for tinnitus: single versus multiple sessions.

Tinnitus is the perception of a sound in the absence of an external acoustic source, which often exerts a significant impact on the quality of life. Currently there is evidence that neuroplastic changes in both neural pathways are involved in the generation and maintaining of tinnitus. Neuromodulation has been suggested to interfere with these neuroplastic alterations. In this study we aimed to compare the effect of two upcoming forms of transcranial electrical neuromodulation: alternating current stimulation (tACS) and random noise stimulation (tRNS), both applied on the auditory cortex. A da

Anomalous Auditory Cortex Activations in Colored Hearing Synaesthetes: An fMRI-Study.

Color percept induction in synaesthetes by hearing words was previously shown to involve activation of visual and specifically color processing cortex areas. While this provides a rationale for the origin of the anomalous color percept the question of mechanism of this crossmodal activation remains unclear. We pursued this question with fMRI in color hearing synaesthetes by exposing subjects to words and tones. Brain activations in word condition accompanied by highly reliable color percepts were compared with activations in tone condition with only occasional color percepts and both contraste

Neuroplasticity of the adult primate auditory cortex following cochlear hearing loss.

Tonotopic organization is an essential feature of the primary auditory area (A1) of primate cortex. In A1 of macaque monkeys, low frequencies are represented rostrolaterally and high frequencies are represented caudomedially. The purpose of this study was to determine if changes occur in this tonotopic organization following cochlear hearing loss. Under anesthesia, the superior temporal gyrus of adult macaque monkeys was exposed, and the tonotopic organization of A1 was mapped using conventional microelectrode recording techniques. Following recovery, the monkeys were selectively deafened for

Individual connectivity-based parcellations reflect functional properties of human auditory cortex.

Neuroimaging studies of the functional organization of human auditory cortex have focused on group-level analyses to identify tendencies that represent the typical brain. Here, we mapped auditory areas of the human superior temporal cortex (STC) in 30 participants (15 women) by combining functional network analysis and 1-mm isotropic resolution 7T functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Two resting-state fMRI sessions, and one or two auditory and audiovisual speech localizer sessions, were collected on 3-4 separate days. We generated a set of functional network-based parcellations from t

Locomotion-dependent auditory gating to the parietal cortex guides multisensory decisions.

Decision-making in mammals fundamentally relies on integrating multiple sensory inputs, with conflicting information resolved flexibly based on a dominant sensory modality. However, the neural mechanisms underlying state-dependent changes in sensory dominance remain poorly understood. Our study demonstrates that locomotion in mice shifts auditory-dominant decisions toward visual dominance during audiovisual conflicts. Using circuit-specific calcium imaging and optogenetic manipulations, we found that weakened visual representation in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) leads to auditory-domina

Foxg1 gene mutation impairs auditory cortex response and reduces sound tolerance.

FOXG1 syndrome (FS) is a rare and devastating neurodevelopmental disorder affected by FOXG1 gene mutations and reduced sound tolerance has been reported in children with FS. Effects of single missense mutation of Foxg1 gene on auditory function and behavior were studied using the G216S mouse model. G216S mice showed significantly reduced gap-induced prepulse inhibition, suggesting poor temporal processing without hearing loss. Increased running and freezing behaviors under loud sounds were also found in G216 mice, suggesting aversive sound behaviors. Electrophysiological assessment of the audi

Surface-based functional metrics and auditory cortex characteristics in chronic tinnitus.

Abnormal auditory cortex (AC) neuronal activity is thought to be a primary cause of the auditory disturbances perceived by individuals suffering from tinnitus. The present study was designed to test that possibility by evaluating auditory cortical characteristics (volume, curvature, surface area, thickness) and surface-based functional metrics in chronic tinnitus patients. In total, 63 chronic tinnitus patients and 36 age-, sex- and education level-matched healthy control (HC) patients were enrolled in this study. Hearing levels in these two groups were comparable, and following magnetic reson

Auditory Cortex Morphology Predicts Language Learning Potential in Children and Teenagers.

In two recent studies, we identified neuroanatomical and neurofunctional markers of musical aptitude, attention deficit (hyperactivity) disorder and dyslexia in the auditory cortex (AC) of children. In a subsequent study with adults, we found evidence for neuroanatomical correlates of speech imitation ability in right Heschl's gyrus (HG), a structure comprising primary and parts of secondary AC. In the present study, we aimed to verify this previously suggested link between structural variation of right HG and language aptitude in a younger population of children and teenagers (N = 42; age ran
