Brainstem auditory pathway maturation in term neonates with congenital cytomegalovirus infection: a cohort study.

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMVi) is a leading cause of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and developmental delay. Brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) recording allows assessment of central auditory pathway maturation in neonates. We aimed to characterize the effect of cCMVi on the maturation of the brainstem auditory pathway in term neonates. We retrospectively reviewed medical records of neonates born with cCMVi in 2010-2018 and characterized their auditory pathway maturation using brainstem auditory-evoked potentials (BAEPs). We compared inter-peak latency differences (I

Age-related hearing loss pertaining to potassium ion channels in the cochlea and auditory pathway.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the most prevalent sensory deficit in the elderly and constitutes the third highest risk factor for dementia. Lifetime noise exposure, genetic predispositions for degeneration, and metabolic stress are assumed to be the major causes of ARHL. Both noise-induced and hereditary progressive hearing have been linked to decreased cell surface expression and impaired conductance of the potassium ion channel KV7.4 (KCNQ4) in outer hair cells, inspiring future therapies to maintain or prevent the decline of potassium ion channel surface expression to reduce ARHL. In c

Hearing loss in multiple sclerosis: localization of the auditory pathway lesion according to electrocochleographic findings.

Multiple sclerosis is known to affect the myelin of the auditory pathway resulting in acute hearing loss. Two cases of sudden deafness due to multiple sclerosis have been evaluated by conventional audiometry, brainstem auditory evoked response audiometry and transtympanic electrocochleography. The abnormalities of the compound action potential in both patients (enhanced latency, abnormal adaptation using fast stimulus rate) and the normal receptor potentials (cochlear microphonic, summating potential), as well as the absence of brainstem responses suggest a disturbance of synchronization at th

Connections of the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus: an inhibitory parallel pathway in the ascending auditory system?

This study examines the dorsal nucleus of the lateral lemniscus (DNLL) and its afferent and efferent connections. In Nissl-stained material, DNLL has three parts: dorsal, ventral, and lateral. Although each part contains neurons with similar Nissl patterns, the subdivisions may be distinguished by the size, shape, and orientation of the cells. The lateral DNLL contains a mixture of DNLL neurons and cells from the sagulum. Afferent connections to DNLL were investigated with anterograde axonal transport techniques. Bilateral inputs to DNLL arise from the anteroventral cochlear nucleus and latera

Functional reorganization of the auditory pathways (or lack thereof) in callosal agenesis is predicted by monaural sound localization performance.

Neuroimaging studies show that permanent peripheral lesions such as unilateral deafness cause functional reorganization in the auditory pathways. However, functional reorganization of the auditory pathways as a result of higher-level damage or abnormalities remains poorly investigated. A relatively recent behavioural study points to functional changes in the auditory pathways in some, but interestingly not in all, of the acallosal individuals that were tested. The present study uses fMRI to investigate auditory activities in both cerebral hemispheres in those same acallosal subjects in order t

Assessment of auditory pathway microstructure in vestibular schwannoma patients: a quantitative diffusion tensor tractography study.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular schwannomas (VSs) are cerebellopontine angle tumors that can result in cranial nerve dysfunction, most commonly sensorineural hearing loss. Conventional structural MRI is unable to provide correlative information on cranial nerve function. In this study, the authors used multitensor tractography to study the white matter microstructural properties of the auditory neural pathway as a correlate of cranial nerve function in a cohort of VS patients. They evaluated the relationship between the auditory neural pathway microstructural properties using pure-tone audiometry (PTA)

Functional status of brainstem auditory pathway in babies born below 30 week gestation with necrotizing enterocolitis.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies showed that neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) adversely affects the brainstem auditory pathway in babies born at 30-40 week gestation. We compared the functional status of the pathway between babies born below 30 week gestation with NEC and those without NEC for any differences to understand whether NEC also affects the pathway in babies born at a smaller gestation. METHOD: Brainstem auditory evoked response was studied at term in NEC babies born below 30 week gestation. The data obtained were compared with age-matched non-NEC babies for any abnormalities, and

Endogenous nerve growth factor stimulation: effects on auditory pathway neural cells in a mouse model.

OBJECTIVE: In the present study, we investigated whether high-pressure hypotonic saline solution (Hphss) affects the basal level of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and expression of receptors in the cochlea, bark earing, retina, and visual cortex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: For this study, we used three weeks old female Sprague Dawley (SD) rats (n = 12). Rats were housed in polypropylene cages and were kept under standard conditions (12 h light:12 h dark cycle) with free access to water and food (Purina chow food). A specific dispenser was employed to deliver sterile hypotonic saline at high pressure (

From development to disease: diverse functions of NMDA-type glutamate receptors in the lower auditory pathway.

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors (NMDA-Rs) are located at each synapse in the lower auditory pathway of mammals and avians. Characterized by a slow and long-lasting excitatory response upon glutamate activation, their existence in a sensory system biologically engineered for speed and precision seems counterintuitive. In this review we consider the diverse functions of NMDA-Rs. Their developmental regulation and unique subunit composition in the inner ear promote protective and neurotrophic roles following acute insult by regulating AMPA-R expression and assisting in the restoration of synaptic

[Medium-latency acoustically evoked brain potentials used for examination of the auditory pathway (author's transl)].

Potentials of the 10-15 ms latency range evoked by acoustic clicks and Gauss-shaped tone bursts habe been investigated in normal hearing adults, 20 patients with cochlear damages, and 6 cases of temporal lobe processes. Methods and results are compared to those of brain stem audiometry. Mean and standard latency ranges are calculated for the different peaks (Fig. 1). Amplitudes should be used only for side difference evaluation in the same patient, because of their big interindividual variation. In cases of profound high frequency hearing loss (Fig. 2) medium-latency potentials yield true thre

The Secondary Motor Cortex-External Globus Pallidus Pathway Regulates Auditory Feedback of Volitional Control.

Effective use of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) requires the ability to suppress a planned action (volitional inhibition) for adaptable control in real-world scenarios, but their mechanisms are unclear. Here, we used fiber photometry to monitor external globus pallidus (GPe) and subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons' activity in mice during a volitional stop-signal task (67% GO, 33% NO-GO). GPe/STN neurons (receiving M2 projections) responded to auditory cues, feedback, and rewards in both trials. Importantly, chemogenetic activation of the M2-GPe pathway enhanced volitional inhibition by modula

Plastic changes along auditory pathway during salicylate-induced ototoxicity: Hyperactivity and CF shifts.

High dose of salicylate, the active ingredient in aspirin, has long been known to induce transient hearing loss, tinnitus and hyperacusis making it a powerful experimental tool. These salicylate-induced perceptual disturbances are associated with a massive reduction in the neural output of the cochlea. Paradoxically, the diminished neural output of the cochlea is accompanied by a dramatic increase in sound-evoked activity in the auditory cortex (AC) and several other parts of the central nervous system. Exactly where the increase in neural activity begins and builds up along the central audito
