The effects of early middle ear pathology on auditory perception and academic achievement.

Two groups of children were compared to determine the effects of early middle ear pathology on the development of auditory perceptual skills and academic achievement. The conductive loss (CL) group consisted of 15 children, aged seven to nine years, with histories of middle ear pathology. The normal control (NC) group was matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status and had negative histories of middle ear pathology. Both groups were from a suburban community of primarily mild socioeconomic status. A test battery consisting of 12 auditory perceptual tests as well as measures of academic achi

Analytical bias accounts for some of the reported effects of tACS on auditory perception.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) has been shown to modulate auditory, visual, cognitive and motor function. However, tACS effects can often be small and difficult to reproduce. Thus, the establishment of robust experimental and analysis procedures is of high importance. We reviewed the analysis used in six studies that investigated if tACS can phase-modulate auditory perception. All studies used analytical methods that introduce bias and could produce false positive results. Four studies corrected for this bias but two did not. OBJECTIVE: Our objectives were two

Perception of envelope-enhanced speech in the presence of noise by individuals with auditory neuropathy.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of background noise on perception of unprocessed and envelope-enhanced speech in individuals with auditory neuropathy (AN). DESIGN: Open-set speech identification abilities were assessed for unprocessed and envelope-enhanced speech in quiet and at three signal to noise ratios (10, 5, and 0 dB signal to noise ratio) in 15 individuals with AN. RESULTS: Results revealed that speech identification ability was affected more in the presence of noise than in quiet. The participants were classified into two groups, Good Performers and Poor Performers, based on th

Early experience of sex hormones as a predictor of reading, phonology, and auditory perception.

Previous research has indicated possible reciprocal connections between phonology and reading, and also connections between aspects of auditory perception and reading. The present study investigates these associations further by examining the potential influence of prenatal androgens using measures of digit ratio (the ratio of the lengths of the index and ring fingers). Those with low digit ratios (shorter index finger and therefore in the masculine direction) are hypothesised to have experienced greater "masculinisation" in the uterus. ANCOVA analyses using a verbal reasoning task as a covari

Spectral analysis of auditory brain stem responses in perceptive hearing loss.

The Fourier analysis of auditory brain stem responses in 45 patients aged 19 to 56 treated because of perceptive hearing loss in Cracow ORL Clinic was carried out. The group consisted of: 15 patients with sudden deafness, 15 patients with Menier's disease and 15 cases with retrocochlear hearing impairment. In cases with recruiting cochlear hearing loss considerable and significantly extension of frequency range in brain stem responses was observed. Moreover, responses induced by stimulus intensity causing recruitment are identical for both ears as far as their shape and power spectrum is conce

Auditory Perceptions Associated With Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulation for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

OBJECTIVES: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HNS) is an effective therapy for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), but its potential auditory side effects are not well studied. This study aims to determine the baseline prevalence of tinnitus in Inspire recipients and assess and characterize new auditory perceptions occurring specifically during device activation. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a scripted telephone survey to collect patient-reported outcomes from individuals who received HNS therapy for OSA. RESULTS: Among 70 HNS recipients surveyed, 17.1% (n = 12) reported

The effect of psychological stress and expectation on auditory perception: A signal detection analysis.

Both psychological stress and predictive signals relating to expected sensory input are believed to influence perception, an influence which, when disrupted, may contribute to the generation of auditory hallucinations. The effect of stress and semantic expectation on auditory perception was therefore examined in healthy participants using an auditory signal detection task requiring the detection of speech from within white noise. Trait anxiety was found to predict the extent to which stress influenced response bias, resulting in more anxious participants adopting a more liberal criterion, and

[The perception of targeted signals in the auditory and somatosensory systems with a lesion of the brain stem].

Auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials (AEPs and SEPs) were recorded in 8 patients with malignant processes in the brainstem region and 14 healthy persons under conditions of relevant and deviant stimulation. The spatial-temporal EP characteristics were evaluated and mapped. The low-voltage AEPs to simple rhythmical stimulation were recorded in patients over the whole cortical surface. During attention activation (solving selective attention tasks) there was an increase in the amplitude of the AEPs, mainly, of their mid-latency components. Under such conditions the N200 SEP components we

Discriminative compensatory activation during auditory beat perception in Parkinson's disease and multiple system atrophy.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory beat perception (ABP) is crucial for rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS), a therapeutic approach for neurological disorders, and particularly Parkinson's disease (PD). The mechanism is thought to be associated with increased activation of the cerebellum and motor-related regions. However, few studies have explored its effects on patients with multiple system atrophy (MSA). This study aimed to compare the compensatory mechanism of ABP in patients with PD and MSA. METHODS: Participants with PD and MSA and normal controls (NCs) were recruited from National Cheng Kung Unive

Tinnitus, masked speech perception, and auditory event-related potentials in clinically normal-hearing adults.

Tinnitus can increase stress and anxiety and reduce quality of life. Compared to listeners with normal hearing and no tinnitus, listeners with tinnitus (with or without hearing loss) often have greater difficulty segregating competing speech. Previous studies have investigated neural correlates of tinnitus using the P3 component of event-related potentials (ERPs). Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) and ERPs were measured in 29 listeners with tinnitus and 25 listeners without tinnitus; all were clinically normal hearing, with pure-tone average (PTA) thresholds <25 dB HL across 500, 1000, 2000,

Auditory Working Memory Mediates the Relationship Between Musical Sophistication and Speech-In-Noise Perception.

Understanding speech in noisy environments (SPIN) is an important everyday ability, and engaging in musical activities has been proposed as a factor that may support this ability. However, the cognitive mechanisms underlying a potential musical advantage in SPIN perception remain unclear. Here we investigated whether musical sophistication is associated with better SPIN perception in a large population-based sample, and whether this relationship is mediated by auditory working memory (AWM), verbal working memory (VWM), or non-verbal intelligence. We recruited 203 participants and measured SPIN

CCDC181, a kinocilium-localization protein, is dispensable for hair bundle development and auditory perception.

Inner ear cochlear hair cells exhibit a highly specialized ciliary architecture that consists of a bundle of stereocilia responsible for mechanotransduction and, during development, a single kinocilium that governs hair bundle polarity. While the morphogenesis of stereocilia is being extensively characterized and many key molecules have been identified, the molecular mechanisms governing the formation and subsequent degeneration of the kinocilium remain largely unknown. Through immunohistochemical staining, we found that CCDC181, a microtubule-binding protein, is abundantly expressed in the po

Visual Temporal Acuity Is Related to Auditory Speech Perception Abilities in Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Despite significant improvements in speech perception abilities following cochlear implantation, many prelingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) recipients continue to rely heavily on visual information to develop speech and language. Increased reliance on visual cues for understanding spoken language could lead to the development of unique audiovisual integration and visual-only processing abilities in these individuals. Brain imaging studies have demonstrated that good CI performers, as indexed by auditory-only speech perception abilities, have different patterns of visual corte

Beta-Band Oscillations Represent Auditory Beat and Its Metrical Hierarchy in Perception and Imagery.

UNLABELLED: Dancing to music involves synchronized movements, which can be at the basic beat level or higher hierarchical metrical levels, as in a march (groups of two basic beats, one-two-one-two …) or waltz (groups of three basic beats, one-two-three-one-two-three …). Our previous human magnetoencephalography studies revealed that the subjective sense of meter influences auditory evoked responses phase locked to the stimulus. Moreover, the timing of metronome clicks was represented in periodic modulation of induced (non-phase locked) β-band (13-30 Hz) oscillation in bilateral auditory and se

Speech Perception Ability in Noise is Correlated with Auditory Brainstem Response Wave I Amplitude.

BACKGROUND: Difficulty understanding speech in background noise is a common complaint of individuals with sensorineural hearing loss. Recent animal studies suggest this difficulty may be due, in part, to spiral ganglion cell degeneration related to aging or noise exposure. Although auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds and standard clinical audiometric tests are minimally affected by neuronal degeneration, the amplitude of wave I of the ABR is correlated to spiral ganglion cell density. PURPOSE: This study hypothesized that wave I amplitude was correlated to speech-in-noise performance

Beyond colour perception: auditory-visual synaesthesia induces experiences of geometric objects in specific locations.

Our brain constantly integrates signals across different senses. Auditory-visual synaesthesia is an unusual form of cross-modal integration in which sounds evoke involuntary visual experiences. Previous research primarily focuses on synaesthetic colour, but little is known about non-colour synaesthetic visual features. Here we studied a group of synaesthetes for whom sounds elicit consistent visual experiences of coloured 'geometric objects' located at specific spatial location. Changes in auditory pitch alter the brightness, size, and spatial height of synaesthetic experiences in a systematic
