Sources of variability in auditory brainstem response thresholds in a mouse model of noise-induced hearing loss.

Numerous and non-acoustic experimental factors can potentially influence experimental outcomes in animal models when measuring the effects of noise exposures. Subject-related factors, including species, strain, age, sex, body weight, and post-exposure measurement timepoints, influence the observed hearing deficits. Experimenter effects, such as experience with experimental techniques and animal handling, may also factor into reported thresholds. In this study, the influence of subject sex, body mass, age at noise exposure, and timepoint of post-exposure recording are reported from a large samp

Pressurized Wideband Acoustic Stapedial Reflex Thresholds: Normal Development and Relationships to Auditory Function in Infants.

This study analyzed effects of pressurization on wideband acoustic stapedial-muscle reflex (ASR) tests in infants cared for in normal newborn (NN) and neonatal intensive care units (NICU). Effects of hearing-screening outcomes on ASR threshold measurements were also evaluated, and a subsequent longitudinal study established normative threshold ranges over the first year after birth. An initial experiment compared thresholds in newborns measured at ambient pressure in the ear canal and at the tympanometric peak pressure. ASR thresholds for broadband noise were higher for ears that did not pass

Auditory steady-state response thresholds in adults with conductive and mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: The Auditory steady state response (ASSR) provides a frequency-specific and automatic assessment of hearing sensitivity and is used in infants and difficult-to-test adults. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the ASSR thresholds among various types (normal, conductive, and sensorineural), degree (normal, mild, and moderate), and configuration (flat and sloping) of hearing sensitivity, and measuring the cutoff point between normal condition and hearing loss for different frequencies. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This clinical trial was performed in Iran and included patients

Correction Factor Evaluation and Between-System Comparison of Behavioral Threshold Predictions From Auditory Brainstem Response Measures in Infants.

PURPOSE: Auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds are corrected to estimate behavioral thresholds in infants. Corrections were validated, and a comparison of behavioral threshold estimates between systems was conducted to inform equipment transition and protocols in Ontario, Canada. METHOD: In Study 1, a retrospective file review was conducted. ABR threshold estimates from 84 infants with hearing loss were compared to behavioral thresholds to validate the accuracy of the ABR corrections applied in the Ontario Infant Hearing Program since 2016. Study 2 examined the precision of two differe

Peripheral-central interactions shape the decoupling between auditory brainstem response amplitudes and auditory thresholds during aging and noise exposure: a computational modeling study.

Age-related and noise-induced hearing loss reflect progressive cochlear degeneration and adaptive changes in central auditory pathways, yet their joint effects on auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitudes and auditory thresholds remain unclear. We developed the Auditory Homeostatic Dynamics Model (AHDM), a three-state ordinary differential equation model of hair-cell sensory function, cochlear synaptic integrity, and activity-dependent central compensation across low-, mid-, and high-frequency domains. The model includes multiplicative peripheral gating, constrained ABR outputs, and targete

Assessment of auditory threshold using Multiple Magnitude-Squared Coherence and amplitude modulated tones monaural stimulation around 40 Hz.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The use of objective detection techniques applied to the auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) for the assessment of auditory thresholds has been investigated over the years. The idea consists in setting up the audiometric profile without subjective inference from patients and evaluators. The challenge encountered is to reduce the detection time of auditory thresholds reaching high correlation coefficients between the objective and the conventional thresholds, as well as reducing difference between thresholds. METHODS: This paper evaluated the use of the Multiple M

Predicting the threshold of single-pulse electrical stimuli using a stochastic auditory nerve model: the effects of noise.

An important factor that may play a role in speech recognition by individuals with cochlear implants is that electrically stimulated nerves respond with a much higher level of synchrony than is normally observed in acoustically stimulated nerves. Recent work has indicated that the addition of noise to an electrical stimulus may result in neural responses whose statistical characteristics are more similar to those observed in acoustically driven neurons. Psychophysical data have indicated that performance on some tasks might also be enhanced by the addition of noise. However, little theoretical

Follow-up of auditory-evoked potentials and temporary threshold shift in subjects developing noise-induced permanent hearing loss.

The effects of auditory fatigue, using a temporary threshold shift (TTS) paradigm, on cochlear microphonics (CM) and on auditory brainstem-evoked potentials (ABEP), were studied in normal-hearing subjects during the development of permanent threshold shift (PTS). Behavioral threshold shifts were accompanied by different effects on CM and on ABEP, as PTS was gradually induced by occupational noise. Measures of the effect of increasing stimulus rate (ISR) on ABEP revealed decreased latency shifts during auditory fatigue. ABEP proved useful in early detection of changes in the auditory system, re

Bone-conducted ultrasonic auditory brainstem response thresholds in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Cisplatin is widely used in cancer treatment but can cause hearing loss, predominantly at high frequencies. Auditory responses to bone-conducted ultrasonic stimulation have been proposed as a potential indicator of cochlear function, but it remains unclear how such responses are affected by cochlear damage. In this study, we measured auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds within and beyond the conventional hearing range in a mouse model of cisplatin-induced hearing loss. Of 32 mice initially examined, 9 were excluded at baseline because of pre-existing high-frequency hearing impairment.

A meta-analysis of bone conduction 80 Hz auditory steady-state response thresholds in adults and infants.

INTRODUCTION: Auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) objectively estimate hearing thresholds in individuals unable to provide behavioral responses. Bone conduction (BC) testing differentiates conductive from sensorineural hearing loss. Accurate BC ASSR threshold estimation relies on correction values, which are not yet well established. The reliability of BC ASSR thresholds to estimate hearing thresholds at 500, 1,000, 2,000, and 4,000 Hz is evaluated. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted to identify studies involving normal-hearing (NH) and hearing-impaired (HI) participants of all ag

The parallel auditory brainstem response paradigm provides accurate and fast hearing thresholds in a clinic-like setting.

OBJECTIVES: The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an essential tool in screening for and diagnosing infant hearing loss, and its results drive decisions regarding interventions and hearing habilitation with impacts extending far into a child's future. Despite the traditional ABR exam's usefulness, there is an identified need to develop faster, more informative exams. The parallel ABR (pABR) measures responses to all frequencies of interest in both ears all at once, rather than the traditional series of single-frequency measurements in one ear at a time, greatly speeding the diagnostic exam.

Discrepancies in Hearing Thresholds between Pure-Tone Audiometry and Auditory Steady-State Response in Non-Malingerers.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate discrepancies between pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and auditory steady state response (ASSR) tests in non-malingerers and investigate brain lesions that may explain the discrepancies, especially in cases where the PTA threshold was worse than the estimated ASSR threshold. DESIGN: PTA, speech audiometry, auditory brainstem response, ASSR, and neuroimaging tests were carried out on individuals selected from 995 cases of hearing impairment. Among these, medical records of 25 subjects (19 males, 6 females; mean age = 46.5 ± 16.0 years) with significant discrepancy between PT

Recovery from tympanic membrane perforation: Effects on membrane thickness, auditory thresholds, and middle ear transmission.

Sounds delivered to the ear move the tympanic membrane (TM), which drives the middle-ear (ME) ossicles and transfers the acoustic energy to the cochlea. Perforations of the TM result in hearing loss because of less efficient sound conduction through the ME. The patterns of TM motions, and thus ME sound transmission, vary with frequency and depend on many factors, including the TM thickness. In this study, we measured TM thickness, auditory brainstem responses (ABR), and ME transmission immediately following a controlled pars tensa perforation and after 4 weeks of spontaneous recovery in a gerb

Auditory brainstem response latency in forward masking, a marker of sensory deficits in listeners with normal hearing thresholds.

In rodent models, acoustic exposure too modest to elevate hearing thresholds can nonetheless cause auditory nerve fiber deafferentation, interfering with the coding of supra-threshold sound. Low-spontaneous rate nerve fibers, important for encoding acoustic information at supra-threshold levels and in noise, are more susceptible to degeneration than high-spontaneous rate fibers. The change in auditory brainstem response (ABR) wave-V latency with noise level has been shown to be associated with auditory nerve deafferentation. Here, we measured ABR in a forward masking paradigm and evaluated wav

[The variation of the vestibular response vs. the variations of the auditory threshold after administration of glycerol in patients with Meniere's disease].

Vestibular and auditory functions after glycerol intake were assessed correlated in twenty-eight patients diagnosed as menieric according to AAOO criteria. All patients had unilateral Ménière's disease confirmed by monolateral hypoacusia and labyrinthine hypofunction. Hearing thresholds were tested by tone-audiometry, according to the standard glycerol test. Variation in vestibular response were assessed comparing the VOR during the rotatory sinusoidal test as well as the caloric test, before glycerol intake and 2 hours after drug administration. Slow phase angolar velocity, directional prepon

Studies on auditory thresholds in normal man and in patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency: the role of adrenal cortical steroids.

Auditory thresholds for sinusoidal tones were determined in eight patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency (four with Addison's disease and four with panhypopituitarism) and compared to those in normal volunteers. In adrenal cortical insufficiency (ACI) the auditory detection sensitivity is significantly more acute than that of normal subjects over most of the frequency range, but especially in the region of greatest hearing sensitivity of normal subjects, 1,000 to 2,000 cycles per second (cps). Treatment of the patients with deoxycorticosterone acetate decreased serum potassium concentrat

Evaluation of Hearing Thresholds in Infants With Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Auditory Brainstem and Steady-State Responses.

Introduction In recent years, most studies on the hearing abilities of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have used the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test alongside other audiological assessments, while only a few have explored the auditory steady-state response (ASSR) test. Moreover, these two electrophysiological methods have not yet been directly compared in this population. This study aims to compare click ABR and chirp ASSR in children with ASD and speech delays to determine whether differences in hearing thresholds can be identified. Methods Children with ASD and speech del

ABRpresto: An algorithm for automatic thresholding of the Auditory Brainstem Response using resampled cross-correlation across subaverages.

The Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is an essential diagnostic indicator of overall health of cochlea, auditory brainstem and midbrain, used extensively in both basic research and clinical studies. A key quantification of the ABR is threshold, the lowest sound level that elicits a response. Because the morphology of ABR waveforms shift with stimulus level and the overall signal-to-noise ratio is low, threshold estimation is not straightforward. Although several algorithmic approaches have been proposed, the current standard practice remains the visual evaluation of ABR waveforms as a functio
