Human-associated microbial inputs and bacterial-fungal ecological coupling shape antibiotic resistance risk in environmental dust.

Environmental dust represents a critical exposure matrix, yet the relationships between multi-kingdom dust microbiomes and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)-associated health risks remain insufficiently characterized. We applied shotgun metagenomics to dust samples from pharmaceutical factories, a dairy farm, railway stations, and schools to comprehensively characterize bacterial, fungal, and viral communities, alongside resistome structure. Microbial community composition exhibited significant differences across all three domains among the sampled environments. Specifically, dust from railway st

Effects on Quality of Application of Two Antagonistic Yeasts on Plums (Prunus salicina) During Postharvest Cold Storage.

Plums are climacteric fruits with a short postharvest shelf-life, which makes them highly susceptible to spoilage by moulds and pathogens. Biological control using antagonistic yeasts offers a promising approach to extend shelf-life by inhibiting fungal growth. This study evaluated the effects of two yeast strains, Hanseniaspora uvarum L793 and Metschnikowia pulcherrima L672, on the quality of 'Larry Ann' Japanese plums during cold storage. Plums were divided into three batches: two treated by immersion in yeast suspensions (108 cells mL-1) and one untreated control. Quality parameters assesse

Unraveling fungal community biodiversity in table olives through tree-based machine learning classification.

In recent years, the number of omics studies aimed at characterizing fungal communities in fermented foods, such as table olives, has steadily increased. Moreover, advances in bioinformatics and artificial intelligence have provided new resources for analysing these datasets. Among these tools, supervised machine learning (ML) models, particularly tree-based algorithms, are especially valuable for their interpretability and their ability to identify underlying patterns. In this study, we evaluated three target variables of table olive samples (processing type, country of origin, and olive cult

The indigenous microbial diversity involved in the spontaneous fermentation of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) identified by means of molecular tools.

Red dragon fruit (RDF) is well-known for its high nutritional content, especially the red pigment betacyanins that possess high antioxidant activity. Natural fermentation is an ancient yet outstanding technique that relies on the autochthonous microbiota from fruits and vegetables surfaces to preserve and improve the nutritional values and quality of the food product. The present study was to evaluate and identify the indigenous microbial community (bacteria and fungi) that are involved in the natural fermentation of RDF. Results revealed a total of twenty bacterial pure cultures and nine fung

Mushroom worker's lung: serologic reactions to thermophilic actinomycetes present in the air of compost tunnels.

Vast numbers of spores of the thermophilic actinomycetes Excellospora flexuosa, Thermomonospora alba, T. curvata and T. fusca were collected from the air in fermentation tunnels during the spawning of mushroom compost, i.e. over 10(9) CFU m-3 of air. Five different genera of fungi, namely, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Cladosporium, Penicillium and Scytalidium, were found at only 10(3) CFU m-3 of air. Agaricus bisporus, used for spawning, was absent. Sera of 10 mushroom growers affected by Mushroom Worker's Lung (MWL) were tested by a qualitative dot-ELISA for antibodies against the spores of th

Microbial communities associated with honey bees in Brazil and in the United States.

Honey bee colony losses worldwide call for a more in-depth understanding of the pathogenic and mutualistic components of the honey bee microbiota and their relation with the environment. In this descriptive study, we characterized the yeast and bacterial communities that arise from six substrates associated with honey bees: corbicular pollen, beebread, hive debris, intestinal contents, body surface of nurses and forager bees, comparing two different landscapes, Minas Gerais, Brazil and Maryland, United States. The sampling of five hives in Brazil and four in the USA yielded 217 yeast and 284 b

Characterization of antimicrobial effect of organotin-based catalysts on diesel-biodiesel deteriogenic microorganisms.

Organotin compounds are applied in several industrial reactions and can present antifungal and antibacterial activities. Incorrect handling and storage practices of biodiesel and diesel-biodiesel blends can lead to microbial development, impacting its final quality. Concerning this problem, this work investigated the antimicrobial action of two organotin catalysts used in biodiesel production with four isolated microroorganisms (Bacillus pumilus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudallescheria boydii, and Aureobasidium pullulans) and a pool of microorganisms (ASTM E1259 standard practice). Samples of

Fungal microbiota from ocular conjuctiva of clinically healthy horses belonging to the military police cavalry of alagoas.

Normal fungal conjunctiva microbiota of horses remains stable in healthy animals, free from ocular and/or systemic diseases which may, eventually, cause ocular alterations. The knowledge of the fungal microbiota is of great importance due to the reduced number of studies reported in the literature and also to the large occurrence of ocular alterations, mainly keratomycosis, in these animals. The aim of this study was to isolate and to identify the fungi present in the ocular conjunctiva of healthy horses belonging to the Military Police Cavalry of Alagoas. Samples from both conjunctival sacks

Evaluating yeasts as biocontrol agents against pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in agri-food: action of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Yeasts are widely recognized for their industrial and fermentative relevance, but their potential as source of antibacterial compounds remains significantly underexplored compared to bacteria or filamentous fungi. This study evaluated a wide taxonomically characterized population of yeast strains for their antimicrobial activity against enteropathogenic bacteria, plant pathogens and spoilage molds, using both direct-contact and VOC-mediated assays. Our findings reveal that antimicrobial activity, including the production of inhibitory VOCs, is highly complex, depending not only on the genus an

Implications of PM2.5 chemical composition in modulating microbial community dynamics during spring in Seoul.

Particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 μm or less (PM2.5) harbors a diverse microbial community. To assess the ecological dynamics and potential health risks associated with airborne microorganisms, it is crucial to understand the factors influencing microbial communities within PM2.5. This study investigated the influence of abiotic parameters, including air pollutants, PM2.5 chemical composition (water-soluble ions and organics), and meteorological variables, on microbial communities in PM2.5 samples collected in Seoul during the spring season. Results revealed a significant

Fungal Community Composition Varies Across Floral and Extrafloral Nectaries.

Floral (FNs) and extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) are key plant microhabitats that mediate interactions among plants, insects, and microorganisms, yet their associated fungal communities remain poorly characterized, especially in tropical ecosystems. Here, we investigated the diversity, taxonomic composition, and functional structure of fungal communities across distinct plant microhabitats of two woody Cerrado species, Maprounea brasiliensis and Hymenaea stigonocarpa, using an environmental DNA metabarcoding approach. In M. brasiliensis, fungal communities from floral and extrafloral nectaries we
