Aerobic cyanide degradation by bacterial isolates from cassava factory wastewater.

Ten bacterial strains that utilize cyanide (CN) as a nitrogen source were isolated from cassava factory wastewater after enrichment in a liquid media containing sodium cyanide (1 mM) and glucose (0.2% w/v). The strains could tolerate and grow in cyanide concentrations of up to 5 mM. Increased cyanide levels in the media caused an extension of lag phase in the bacterial growth indicating that they need some period of acclimatisation. The rate of cyanide removal by the strains depends on the initial cyanide and glucose concentrations. When initial cyanide and glucose concentrations were increase

Investigating the in vitro antibacterial, antibiofilm, antioxidant, anticancer and antiviral activities of zinc oxide nanoparticles biofabricated from Cassia javanica.

It is thought to be risk-free, environmentally benign, and safe for biological processes to produce zinc oxide nanoparticles from renewable resources. This study examined Cassia javanica's ability to create ZnONPs. The generated ZnONPs were analyzed using a variety of techniques, such as TEM, FTIR spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and XRD analysis. The antibacterial potential of ZnONPs has been investigated using both Agar well diffusion and microtitreplate (MTP) methods. One method used to evaluate ZnONPs' capacity to scavenge free radicals at different concentrations was the DPPH method. Th

Effects of sterilizing gamma irradiation on bloodspot newborn screening tests and whole blood cyclosporine and tacrolimus measurements.

Sterilizing irradiation of the US mail has been proposed as a method to prevent delivery of viable anthrax spores. Because newborn screening samples (bloodspots) and cyclosporine and tacrolimus specimens (whole blood) are delivered routinely through the mail, we studied whether sterilizing gamma irradiation could affect these test results. Specimens were exposed to 18 kGy gamma irradiation (100 hours x 18,000 rad/h), a "kill dose" for Bacillus pumilus spore strips. Irradiation had no significant effect on whole blood cyclosporine or tacrolimus results, but it had a degradative effect on bloods

Solid rocket motor insulation adhesives with sporicidal activity promote planetary protection for deep space missions.

To prevent microbial contamination of extraterrestrial biospheres, NASA has established planetary protection requirements for spacecraft bioburden reduction. For missions to land on the icy moons of the outer planets, solid rocket motors (SRM) commonly used as de-orbit and braking stages are of particular concern for planetary protection since microbial contamination may occur during spacecraft manufacturing and assembly and debris from the SRM can spread over large portions of the planetary surface after impact. In concept spacecraft designs for deep space missions, certain SRM regions are no

Bioinspired inimitable cadmium telluride quantum dots for bioimaging purposes.

Synthesis of quantum nanoparticles of specific size, shape and composition are an aspect important in nanotechnology research. Although these nanostructures are routinely synthesized by chemical routes, the use of microorganisms has emerged as a promising option. The synthesis of cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots by two hitherto unreported marine bacteria (Bacillus pumilus and Serratia marcescens) is reported here. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy indicated the synthesis of CdTe nanoparticles and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns implicated their crystalline face-centered cubic nat

Predicting heat process efficiency in thermal processes when bacterial inactivation is not log-linear.

The food industry widely uses the F-value which considers microbial log-linear inactivation, while microbial heat inactivation may result in a non-log-linear inactivation pattern due to genetic or phenotypical heterogeneity. This may yield discrepancies in predicting microbial heat inactivation under dynamic conditions of heat treatment. In this paper, we suggest the calculation of the equivalent time of heat treatment at a given temperature to overcome these constraints. To validate our proposal, the heat inactivation of Bacillus pumilus, showing non-log-linear behavior, was predicted for 4 d

Cyanide hydratases and cyanide dihydratases: emerging tools in the biodegradation and biodetection of cyanide.

The purpose of this study is to summarize the current knowledge of the enzymes which are involved in the hydrolysis of cyanide, i.e., cyanide hydratases (CHTs; EC 4.2.1.66) and cyanide dihydratases (CynD; EC 3.5.5.1). CHTs are probably exclusively produced by filamentous fungi and widely occur in these organisms; in contrast, CynDs were only found in a few bacterial genera. CHTs differ from CynDs in their reaction products (formamide vs. formic acid and ammonia, respectively). Several CHTs were also found to transform nitriles but with lower relative activities compared to HCN. Mutants of CynD

The crystal structures of CDD-1, the intrinsic class D β-lactamase from the pathogenic Gram-positive bacterium Clostridioides difficile, and its complex with cefotaxime.

Class D β-lactamases, enzymes that degrade β-lactam antibiotics and are widely spread in Gram-negative bacteria, were for a long time not known in Gram-positive organisms. Recently, these enzymes were identified in various non-pathogenic Bacillus species and subsequently in Clostridioides difficile, a major clinical pathogen associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Comparison of the BPU-1 enzyme from Bacillus pumilus with the CDD-1 and CDD-2 enzymes from C. difficile demonstrated that the latter enzymes have broadened their substrate profile to efficiently hydrolyze the expanded-spe

Alginate-Based Hydrogel as Delivery System for Therapeutic Bacterial RNase.

To deliver therapeutic proteins into a living body, it is important to maintain their target activity in the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration. Secreted ribonuclease from Bacillus pumilus (binase) has antitumor and antiviral activity, which makes it a promising therapeutic agent. This globular protein of small molecular weight (12.2 kDa) is considered as a potential agent that induces apoptosis of tumor cells expressing certain oncogenes, including colorectal and duodenum cancer. The most important problem of its usage is the preservation of its structure and target activity, wh
