Risk of Serious Bacterial and Non-Bacterial Infections in People With MASLD.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has become the most common chronic liver disease globally. MASLD is a multisystem disease where metabolic dysfunction plays a key role in the development of MASLD and its most relevant liver-related morbidities and extrahepatic complications, such as cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease and certain types of extrahepatic cancers. Among the least examined MASLD-related extrahepatic complications, an ever-increasing number of observational studies have reported a positive association between MASLD and the risk of serious b

Intrastromal Corneal Ring Implants Associated Bacterial Infections.

PURPOSE: This study examines the incidence of infection and resistance associated with Intracorneal Ring Segment (ICRS) implantation, a common outpatient surgical treatment for correcting refractive errors and corneal ectatic diseases. Although ICRS procedures are typically safe and reversible, there is a low but notable risk of microbial infections, which require prompt and sometimes invasive treatment. METHODS: Three electronic databases, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus, were utilised to search for literature according to PRISMA guidelines to identify infections related to the impl

Disease Tolerance during Viral-Bacterial Co-Infections.

Disease tolerance has emerged as an alternative way, in addition to host resistance, to survive viral-bacterial co-infections. Disease tolerance plays an important role not in reducing pathogen burden, but in maintaining tissue integrity and controlling organ damage. A common co-infection is the synergy observed between influenza virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae that results in superinfection and lethality. Several host cytokines and cells have shown promise in promoting tissue protection and damage control while others induce severe immunopathology leading to high levels of morbidity and mo

Doxycycline Prophylaxis for Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have been increasing over the past 2 decades in gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men. With the widespread use of early human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) treatment, which virtually eliminates transmission risk, and the availability of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, there have been attitudinal changes regarding HIV infection with resultant increases in sexual contact and declines in condom use. Doxycycline is used for primary prophylaxis in a number of infectious diseases. We conducted a state-of-the-art review to examine the current

Bacterial Infections of the Central Nervous System.

Acute bacterial meningitis and spinal epidural abscess are neurological emergencies. Acute bacterial meningitis may present with symptoms as nonspecific as headache and fever, but rapid progression to an altered level of consciousness is not unusual. Spinal epidural abscess manifests initially as back pain, followed by radicular pain, then weakness, and finally paraplegia. Brain abscess may initially present only with headache, or as a new-onset seizure or with a focal neurological deficit. Bacterial infections of the central nervous system require emergent diagnosis and management. In this ar

Acute and chronic bacterial infections and sarcoidosis.

Pathogen-induced inflammatory diseases mostly involving, but sometimes exclusively affecting, the central nervous system (CNS) manifest with a plethora of signs and symptoms. The different diseases are still difficult to cure despite modern diagnostic, preventive, and therapeutic advances, and this is mainly due to the host inflammatory response, leading to irreversible tissue damage. Knowledge about underlying pathomechanisms is constantly growing, and numerous studies on humans, human material, and animal models as well as in vitro systems have considerably increased our understanding of mol

Role of bacterial infections in pancreatic cancer.

Established risk factors for pancreatic cancer, including tobacco smoking, chronic pancreatitis, obesity and type 2 diabetes, collectively account for less than half of all pancreatic cancer cases. Inflammation plays a key role in pancreatic carcinogenesis, but it is unclear what causes local inflammation, other than pancreatitis. Epidemiological data suggest that Helicobacter pylori may be a risk factor for pancreatic cancer, and more recently, data suggest that periodontal disease, and Porphyromonas gingivalis, a pathogen for periodontal disease, may also play a role in pancreatic carcinogen

Emerging drugs for bacterial urinary tract infections.

IMPORTANCE OF THE FIELD: Bacterial urinary tract infections (UTIs) are amongst the most common infectious diseases. Therefore, any improvement in UTI management will have a high impact on the quality of life of the individual patient and the entire healthcare system. A dramatic, clinically significant increase in the antimicrobial resistance of uropathogens over the past 5 - 10 years calls for new concepts in the treatment of UTIs. AREAS COVERED IN THIS REVIEW: This article focuses on uncomplicated and complicated UTIs, and discusses antimicrobial resistance trends and antibacterial strategie

Toll-like receptors and renal bacterial infections.

Urinary tract infection and pyelonephritis are mainly due to uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), and are common infectious diseases that constitute a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in humans. They are also the most frequent infectious complications in renal transplant patients, and can impair long-term renal graft function and outcome. UPEC may invade the kidneys via the systemic circulation or by local retrograde infection. They induce the proinflammatory mediators, which are intended to defend the host and clear bacteria from the kidneys. The Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play

Fibrinolysis and host response in bacterial infections.

The plasminogen activation system is part of the fibrinolysis which is tightly regulated and protected against dysfunction by various activators and inhibitors. However, microorganisms including bacteria, fungi and also parasites have been proven to interact in a specific manner with components of the fibrinolytic pathways. Pathogenic bacteria are capable to subvert the function of proteases, activators or inhibitors for their own benefits including dissemination within the host and evasion of host inflammatory immune response. Here, we provide a state of the art overview of the divers strateg

(B2) Periodontal diseases and other bacterial infections.

The workshop addressed the following questions with respect to periodontal diseases and bacterial infections seen in HIV infection: (1) What is linear gingival erythema? Is it prevalent only in HIV disease? A crude Delphi technique was used to ascertain whether LGE existed, but a consensus could not be reached. It was agreed that a diagnosis of LGE should be considered only if the lesion persists after removal of plaque in the initial visit. (2) Do periodontal pockets contribute to viremia in HIV infection? At present, the data are not available to answer this question. (3) Do anti-viral drugs

[Antibiotherapy in children with atypical bacterial infections].

Atypical bacteria responsible for infections in children are mainly Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila. Atypical pneumonia is a frequent disease in children. Until recently, the outcome was thought to be rather benign and antibiotherapy to have only a minor impact on the prognosis. Recent studies have demonstrated that M. pneumoniae and C. pneumoniae were involved in a variety of infections, including acute upper airway disease, otitis and pharyngitis under five. Antibiotherapy was proven able to decrease the rate of complications and recurrence, notably epi

Bacterial infections after intestine and multivisceral transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The frequency of bacterial infections (BI) in intestinal transplant (IT) patients is high with sepsis being the leading cause of death after this procedure. We herein report our experience with major BI to ascertain the incidence, microbiological and clinical factors, risk factors and outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 124 patients (72 children and 52 adults) received 135 grafts: namely, 39 isolated intestine, 33 liver-intestine and 63 multivisceral. Only major BI were considered, namely, those associated with serious morbidity/mortality requiring specific therapy. Patient data were

[Chlamydia and other sexually transmitted bacterial infections].

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most common sexually transmitted bacterium worldwide. In Western Europe, the prevalence of gonorrhoea has decreased by more than 95% since the 1970ies; "tripper" and syphilis are essentially confined to high-risk groups while genital chlamydial infections affect people of all social classes, but information about chlamydia is still scarce in many European countries. Clinically genital chlamydial infections resemble gonorrhoea (dysuria, discharge, irregular bleeding, dyspareunia, perihepatitis) and may be mistaken for appendicitis. However, Chlamydia trachomatis per

Bacterial skin infections in a tropical environment.

The subject of bacterial skin infection in the tropics has shown some significant advances in the past few years, although it is still relatively understudied. Of special interest is the emerging concern about the public health aspects of pyoderma, either primary or secondary to scabies, in developing countries. In addition, certain more unusual agents, such as Bacillus anthracis and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, continue to cause significant problems in some areas, while incidence of other tropical diseases, such as endemic treponematoses, has largely dropped.

[Procalcitonin, a new marker for bacterial infections].

Procalcitonin (PCT), the precursor protein of the hormone calcitonin, appears to be an early marker of the presence of severe systemic infection. High serum concentrations are associated with severe systemic bacterial, parasitic or fungal infections. In contrast, PCT is generally not induced by severe viral infections or inflammatory reactions of non-infectious origin. Hence, PCT can be used for differential diagnosis of bacterial and viral meningitis. PCT may be helpful in the differentiation between infectious and non-infectious origin of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and ac

[Bacterial infections in patients infected by HIV].

Individuals infected by the human immuno deficiency are more prone to suffering certain bacterial infections in the course of their clinical evolution. The agents involved in these infections are: Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp and Campylobacter spp, which occasion an increase in morbidity and mortality. With a lower frequency, but with an equal morbidity and mortality, infections have been found caused by Rhodococcus equi, Nocardia spp and Bartonella spp. Even though all of them account for a selective impairment of immunodeficiency in
