Zoonoses and bats: a look from human health viewpoint.

Bats are the most abundant and most widely distributed mammals on the Earth after humans. Except Antarctica and some small remote islands, they are prevalent worldwide. Although the actual role played by bats as reservoir or in disseminating zoonoses is still enigmatic a multitude of zoonotic diseases are known to be associated with bats. Such diseases including viral, bacterial, parasitic, fungal and rickettsial diseases, reported from all over the world including India have been briefed in this article as an informative approach because dramatically increased and diversified human activities

[Infections associated with pets].

INTRODUCTION: Domestic pets can transmit numerous infections, including bacterial, parasitic, fungal, and viral diseases. This paper reports the epidemiologic, clinical, therapeutic and prophylactic data of these zoonoses. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY POINTS: The routes of transmission are various. Bites and scratches are the most common health hazards and result in localized infections. Pasteurellosis, various aerobic and anaerobic infections, and cat-scratch disease are predominant. Bites are treated by cleaning the wound, rabies and tetanus prophylaxis, and the appropriate use of antibiotics.

Case report of pulmonary brucellosis complicated by pleural effusion.

Brucellosis is a bacterial disease and one of the most widespread zoonoses transmitted by an animal. It can affect any organ system, but pulmonary involvement is an unusual presentation according to the literature. We report the case of a 32 -year-old lady from Saudi Arabia who suffered from persistent fever and was found to have lobar pneumonia complicated by parapneumonic effusion. She started empirical antibiotics, and many investigations were done. In the end, after more detail about the patient's circumstances, the presumptive diagnosis of Brucella was made by high serology titer. She was

Zoonoses from pets horses, donkeys and mules: with special references to Egypt.

A zoonosis is an animal disease that is transmissible to humans. Humans are usually an accidental host that acquires disease through close contact with an infected animal, who may or may not be symptomatic. Children are at highest risk for infection because they are more likely to have close contact with pets. Pets are responsible for transmission of an extensive array of bacterial, fungal, and parasitic zoonotic pathogens. The route of transmission can be through the saliva (e.g., bites or contaminated scratches), feces, respiratory secretions, direct contact, or by the animal acting as a veh

Australia's notifiable disease status, 2009: annual report of the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System.

In 2009, 65 diseases and conditions were nationally notifiable in Australia. States and territories reported a total of 236,291 notifications of communicable diseases to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, an increase of 48% on the number of notifications in 2008. This increase was largely due to cases of influenza A(H1N1) pandemic 2009. In 2009, the most frequently notified diseases were vaccine preventable diseases (101,627 notifications, 43% of total notifications), sexually transmissible infections (73,399 notifications, 31% of total notifications), and gastrointestinal d

Zoonotic diseases of fish and their prevention and control.

Fish and aquatic-derived zoonotic diseases have caused considerable problems in the aquaculture industry and fishery worldwide. In particular, zoonotic diseases can pose widespread threats to humans. With the world's growing population and potential global trade of aquaculture and fish, the risk of environmental contamination and development of fish and aquatic-derived zoonoses in humans are increasing. The important causes of zoonoses include bacteria, parasites, viruses, and fungi. The zoonotic bacterial agents are divided into two main groups: Gram-positive (Mycobacteriaceae, Streptococcace

Selected Endemic Zoonoses in Pigs Presenting for Slaughter in Kampala, Uganda.

Leptospirosis, brucellosis, and Q fever (coxiellosis) are bacterial zoonoses that cause acute febrile illness in people as well as reproductive losses in pigs. Pig keeping is an increasingly important livelihood to millions of smallholder farmers in Uganda because of exponential increases in demand for pork. The prevalence of leptospirosis and Q fever in pigs is unknown, and the few studies of porcine brucellosis have estimated a range of seroprevalence. Therefore, we undertook a prevalence survey of leptospirosis, brucellosis, and Q fever in pigs using quantitative real-time PCR to determine

Ecological and evolutionary drivers of haemoplasma infection and bacterial genotype sharing in a Neotropical bat community.

Most emerging pathogens can infect multiple species, underlining the importance of understanding the ecological and evolutionary factors that allow some hosts to harbour greater infection prevalence and share pathogens with other species. However, our understanding of pathogen jumps is based primarily around viruses, despite bacteria accounting for the greatest proportion of zoonoses. Because bacterial pathogens in bats (order Chiroptera) can have conservation and human health consequences, studies that examine the ecological and evolutionary drivers of bacterial prevalence and barriers to pat

Zoonotic public health risks in farmed versus wild-caught wildlife for traditional markets for food: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Intensive farming, wildlife trade, and close human-animal contact in traditional markets for food (TMFs) are widely considered drivers of zoonotic disease emergence. However, comparative evidence assessing differences between farmed and wild-caught wildlife at the market interface remains limited. This study evaluated whether animals sourced from farmed versus wild-caught systems differ in pathogen detection as a proxy for zoonotic hazard and does not measure transmission or human infection outcomes. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and MEDLINE were systematically searched up to August 11, 2025

Bacteriophages as Antibacterial Agents Against Bovine Pathobionts Associated with Foodborne Human Morbidity.

Rates of foodborne infectious disease are increasing globally. The One Health zoonoses report shows increasing cases of shigatoxigenic Escherichia coli, campylobacteriosis, salmonellosis and listeriosis in the last 5 years. The ESKAPE pathogens are the top priority due to their alarming rate of resistance to broad-spectrum beta-lactams, carbapenems, glycopeptides, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides and biocide solutions. Research assessing alternative biocontrol options highlight the advantages of bacteriophages in the control of resistant bacterial species. Phage formulations including ListShi

Pathogenic bacteria in biogas plants using cattle, swine, and poultry manure.

Fugate, a waste product from biogas production, regularly used in agriculture as a fertiliser, may contain bacterial pathogens that cause zoonoses. Anaerobic digestion (AD) can inactivate viable pathogens, including parasites, viruses, and pathogens containing antibiotic resistance genes. This study aimed to compare the numbers of pathogenic bacteria and diversity of potential bacterial pathogens in the fugate using three different types of slurry: cattle, swine, and poultry manure. The swine fugate showed higher numbers of Clostridium perfringens and Campylobacter sp. than the poultry and cat

[Capnocytophaga canimorsus: atypical septicemic meningitis, approach to microbiological diagnosis and therapeutic impact].

Meningitis and septicaemia due to Capnocytophaga canimorsus are extremely rare and described as emerging zoonoses because of their low incidence and prevalence, but also because of the challenges in bacterial identification, thus, the real number of cases is probably underestimated. We report the case of a 61-year-old man, with a history a chronic alcoholism, who developed, following a recent dog bite, meningitis with normoglycorachia and concomitant sepsis, and had a favorable outcome after intravenous probabilistic antibiotherapy combining ceftazidime and metronidazole. This association aime

Zoonotic and other veterinary chlamydiae - an update, the role of the plasmid and plasmid-mediated transformation.

The obligate intracellular bacterial genus Chlamydia harbours species with zoonotic potential, particularly C. psittaci, causative agent of psittacosis, and C. abortus, which may lead to miscarriage in pregnant women. The impact of other bird chlamydiae such as C. avium, C. gallinaceae, and C. buteonis, or reptilian species such as C. crocodili, amongst others, on human health is unclear. The chlamydial native plasmid, a suspected virulence factor, is present in all currently described 14 Chlamydia species except for some plasmid-free strains. The plasmid is also the primary tool to study chla

Molecular evaluation of zoonotic bacterial pathogens in high diversity of bats from Brazil.

The bats have stood out for their flexibility and adaptation to urban centers; moreover, are described as potential carriers of pathogens, which altogether raises One health concerns. Therefore, the presence of potentially pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella spp., Leptospira spp., Bartonella spp., Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus aureus, Rickettsia spp., Pasteurella multocida, Coxiella burnetii, and Listeria monocytogenes) in bat species in Brazil was investigated. A total of 283 bat liver samples belonging to 78 bat species from six Brazilian states were retrieved from the Mammal Collectio
