Emerging evidence suggests that bariatric surgery improves pregnancy outcomes of women with obesity by reducing the rates of gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension, and macrosomia. However, it is associated with an increased risk of a small-for-gestational-age fetus and prematurity. Based on the work of a multidisciplinary task force, we propose clinical practice recommendations for pregnancy management following bariatric surgery. They are derived from a comprehensive review of the literature, existing guidelines, and expert opinion covering the preferred type of surgery for wom

This study analyzes the main advantages and disadvantages of various surgical and endoscopic techniques in bariatric surgery. Screening of foreign and domestic literature with appropriate keywords revealed studies devoted to various treatment approaches in patients with obesity. Thanks to analysis of these publications, it is possible to demonstrate the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic interventions in bariatric surgery. Intraluminal endoscopic approach, in particular endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a modern and minimally invasive alternative to traditional surgery in patients with mor

PURPOSE: Obesity remains a significant public health issue in the Western world, affecting millions of Americans and contributing to chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. In June 2021, the Food and Drug Administration approved semaglutide for long-term weight management. While its effectiveness in promoting weight loss has been well-documented, its impact on the field of bariatric surgery remains uncertain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 515 bariatric patients from January 2022 to November 2023. Patients on semaglutide in the preoperative peri

With a rising worldwide incidence of obesity, particularly in the young, bariatric surgery offers an effective method of meaningful and sustained weight loss. At present, most bariatric procedures are carried out in women and increasingly in younger age groups. In line with the fertility benefits associated with weight loss, pregnancy after bariatric surgery is now a very common scenario. Although there is limited evidence to support optimal care in this group, most women appear to have good pregnancy outcomes, with reduced rates of pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes (GDM). However, rates

BACKGROUND: Bariatric surgery procedures are the most successful and durable treatment for morbid obesity. Hemorrhage represents a life-threatening complication, occurring in 1.3-1.7% of bariatric surgeries.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined patients undergoing Bariatric Surgery from July 2017 to June 2020 (Group A) and those operated from July 2020 to June 2022 (Group B) in our Department. Starting from July 2020 we have implemented intraoperative measures to prevent postoperative bleeding, increasing mean arterial pressure (MAP) by 30% compared to preoperative and reducing the pneumoperito

IMPORTANCE: The outcomes of bariatric surgery vary considerably across patients, but the association of race with these measures remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of race on perioperative and 1-year outcomes of bariatric surgery.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Propensity score matching was used to assemble cohorts of black and white patients from the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative who underwent a primary bariatric operation (Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, or adjustable gastric banding) between June 2006 and January 2017. Cohorts were balanced

Adolescent obesity has markedly increased worldwide in both its extent and prevalence in recent decades and obesity prevention strategies are failing. As a result, effective treatment strategies are urgently needed. As behavioral and pharmacological treatment approaches have only moderate effects in severe obesity, bariatric surgery has begun to emerge as a treatment option. In this debate article, we offer arguments opposing and supporting bariatric surgery in the treatment of severe obesity in adolescents. Bariatric surgery has superior therapeutic outcomes with respect to weight loss and re

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is an important modifiable etiological factor associated with several diseases. There is strong evidence that urinary incontinence (UI) is positively correlated with body mass index (BMI).
AIM: One of the many benefits experienced by obese patients after bariatric surgery is decrease in UI. To investigate this correlation, we aimed to examine the effects of weight loss on UI in female patients who had undergone laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Obese female patients (n=120), ≥18 years of age, and planning to undergo LSG were included in this

Obesity has been on the rise globally and more people are now clinically obese than ever before in the US. This issue has a significant impact on both health and cost to healthcare systems. Bariatric surgery is efficacious in treatment of obesity but only in late stages of the disease, and there is a requirement for less invasive techniques/devices to treat obesity at earlier stages. Currently a number of these are either in clinical trials or have recently been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss. This review aims to give an overview of the newer technologies and tech

Between June 2009 and July 2012, Apnoea-Hypopnoea Index (AHI) and Functional Outcomes of Sleep Questionnaires Scores (FOSQ) were prospectively evaluated pre- and post-operatively in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. A total of 167 subjects were studied, 75.4% were females. The median age was 46 (14-75) years and BMI 49 (36-69) kg/m2. Ninety two (55.0%) patients were diagnosed with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) preoperatively. Fifty (54.0%) required positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy. The mean reduction in BMI post bariatric surgery was 12.2 ± 4.52 kg/m2 at 6.56 ± 2.70 months. Eighty

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyolysis (RML) is a rare complication of bariatric surgery. A systematic review was performed to identify risk factors and patient outcomes in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery who develop RML.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed between January 1990 and March 2012 using relevant MeSH terms. Studies were chosen based on predefined inclusion criteria. RML was defined as a creatine kinase of more than 1,000 IU/L. The parameters assessed included patient characteristics of the RML population, type of bariatric surgery performed, operating time, comp

BACKGROUND: Although bariatric surgery has been shown to improve hepatic steatosis in morbidly obese patients, the effect of weight loss on hepatic fibrosis has not been determined. Since the prognosis of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is closely related to the development of hepatic fibrosis, it is important to determine the hepatic histology of these patients after weight loss. We therefore evaluated the prevalence of hepatic fibrosis in morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery and assessed the correlation of histologic changes with weight loss.
METHODS: We retro

Wernicke's encephalopathy is an acute, serious brain disorder resulting from thiamine deficiency, which is important as a cofactor in several enzymes associated with carbohydrate metabolism. The encephalopathy is most often associated with severe alcohol abuse, but thiamine deficiency can be caused by many other medical conditions. Bariatric surgery is listed among the causes of Wernicke's encephalopathy. This review provides a brief overview of the risk factors that cause thiamine deficiency, along with clinical features, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures important for timely recognition,

Bariatric surgery procedures, including laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, result in an average weight loss of 50 percent of excess body weight. Remission of diabetes mellitus occurs in approximately 80 percent of patients after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Other obesity-related comorbidities are greatly reduced, and health-related quality of life improves. The Obesity Surgery Mortality Risk Score can help identify patients with increased mortality risk from bariatric surgery. Complications and adverse effects are lowest with la

BACKGROUND: The polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent cause of female infertility with an estimated prevalence of 6-10% in premenopausal women. Due to its long-term metabolic and cardiovascular consequences, it poses a severe health problem. Visceral obesity and subsequent insulin resistance represent the core pathophysiology of PCOS, clearly suggesting that measures to reduce abdominal obesity should be pursued.
METHODS: Between February 1995 and October 2006, 204 patients underwent bariatric surgery in the SRH Hospital of Gera. 75% of the patients were female and three of th

Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for patients with clinically severe obesity. In addition to significant weight loss, it is also associated with improvements in comorbidities. Unfortunately, bariatric surgery also has the potential to cause a variety of nutritional and metabolic complications. These complications are mostly due to the extensive surgically induced anatomical changes incurred by the patient's gastrointestinal tract, particularly with roux-en-Y gastric bypass and biliopancreatic diversion. Complications associated with vertical banded gastroplasty are mostly due to dec
