The nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is a rare and complex disease with multiple manifestations. As an example, we present the case of an eight-year-old girl with this syndrome whose initial complaint was acute abdominal pain secondary to torsion of an ovarian fibroma. Because of its multisystem effects, patients with this syndrome can present to any of a number of medical or surgical specialists. Close attention to the family and past medical history and physical examination will alert the clinician to its presence, allowing for appropriate genetic counseling and serial screening for the

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS; basal cell nevus syndrome or Gorlin syndrome) is a cancer-predisposition syndrome characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and diverse developmental defects. The gene for NBCCS has been mapped to 9q23.1-q31 in North American and European families. In addition, loss of heterozygosity (LOH) for genetic markers in this region has been detected in sporadic BCCs, indicating that the NBCCS gene is probably a tumor-suppressor gene. In this study we have determined that the NBCCS gene is also linked to this region in Australasian pedigrees and

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), is a rare, inherited autosomal dominant disorder primarily caused by mutations in the PTCH1 gene, which regulates the Hedgehog signaling pathway. This genetic defect leads to the uncontrolled proliferation of basal cells, resulting in the formation of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). This study aims to present a complex clinical case of a patient with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome who developed multiple recurrent metastatic basal cell carcinomas on the facial region, detailing th

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a useful non-invasive diagnostic tool for diagnosing and monitoring treatment of basal cell carcinomas. We describe the use of OCT in a patient with Basal Cell Naevus Syndrome. Through measuring tumour depth on OCT, management of individual tumours was triaged accordingly using 0.4 mm tumour depth as a cut-off for surgical and non-surgical management. OCT has potential to reduce unnecessary excisions and associated morbidity in this population of patients.

BACKGROUND: Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is an autosomal-dominant disease characterized by the early onset of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), among other findings. Clinically, the BCCs may appear as soft pedunculated neoplasms that can be mistaken for true acrochordons.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to describe the dermatoscopic characteristics of small acrochordon-like or polypoid BCCs in a child with GGS, and to perform histopathologic correlation.
METHODS: Acrochordon-like growths from a child with GGS were studied. Clinical records and digital dermatoscopic images were collected, and excisi

Cervical spondylolisthesis is a rate vertebral anomaly that has not been associated with other major congenital abnormalities. In a 16-year-old girl, lower cervical spondylolisthesis was associated with a multiple nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. The salient features of cervical spondylolisthesis include occipital headache, nuchal rigidity, torticollis, painful range of limited motion, hypesthesia, and depressed deep tendon reflexes. The treatment in the patient was anterior vertebral body fusion. Awareness of this associated problem and prompt treatment are essential for prevention of ne

The association of cutaneous and extracutaneous abnormalities is a common phenomenon, widely described in a variety of genetic syndromes. Nevertheless, yet undescribed syndromic combinations may still exist. Herein we present a case report of a patient who was admitted to the Dermatology Department due to multiple basal cell carcinomas arising from nevus sebaceous. In addition to the cutaneous malignancies, the patient presented with palmoplantar keratoderma, prurigo nodularis, hypothyroidism, multiple lumbar abnormalities, uterine myoma, an ovarian cyst, and highly dysplastic colon adenoma. Dear Editor, Germline loss-of-function variants in SUFU (MIM*607035), a component of the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway, have been associated with multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma (iBCC, MIM#604451). This is a yet undefined clinicopathological entity with features that are often distinct from basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS, MIM#109400). In carriers of germline SUFU variants, basaloid neoplasms tend to arise at a later age compared with BCNS; the iBCC subtype is more frequently observed, and jaw cysts have not been reported. [...].

BACKGROUND: Gorlin-Goltz syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder characterized by a predisposition to various cancers. Clinicopathological findings of syndrome are very diverse and many symptoms begin to manifest in a certain period of life.
CASE: The authors describe a case report of a man who, at the age of 34 years, presented to a dermatologist with multiple tumor lesions of the skin. The lesions started to develop when he was 30 years old and thereafter increased in number. Histology revealed superficial, superficial-nodular and nodular basal cell carcinomas. A total of 11 ba

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a cutaneous, generally primary malignancy, most common among the elderly. We report the case of a patient presenting numerous BCCs several years after radiation therapy for nasopharyngeal cancer and discuss the risk factors for this tumor and the role played by radiation in its genesis.
CASE: A 30-year-old woman presented with pigmented facial lesions that had been developing over the past year. Eleven years earlier, she had had an undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (T3N2M0), which was treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy and then external rad

It is well known that patients with heritable cutaneous diseases may have excess tumors during their lifetime. This relationship has been shown for such diverse conditions as xeroderma pigmentosum, Bloom syndrome, basal cell nevus syndrome, and psoriasis. However, multiple cutaneous tumors have not been previously described in people with lamellar ichthyosis. This article describes the cases of two such patients, possible treatment, and a previously undescribed ichthyosis syndrome.

Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are developmental odontogenic cysts affecting the maxillofacial region and their association with a syndrome especially Naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is a common occurrence in comparison to non syndromic multiple OKCs. In a first, we present a series of four non syndromic cases with multiple OKCs in western Indian population. The presence of multiple OKC in our present case series may be because of the multifocal nature of the lesion rather than its association with any syndrome. Thus, a comprehensive evaluation of any patients reporting with mult

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human cancer, with approximately 3.6 million cases diagnosed each year. About 2000 deaths annually in the United States are attributed to basal and squamous cell skin cancers. There is a direct link between ultraviolet exposure and the development of BCC, as UV exposure damages DNA and induces mutations in tumor suppressor genes. Aberrations in the hedgehog pathway can also result in BCC, highlighted by the fact that most cases of sporadic BCCs have been found to have mutations in different genes involved in the hedgehog pathway. There are several

The histopathologic features of 312 odontogenic keratocysts are described. These features are discussed in relation to their pathogenesis and behavioral characteristics, including recurrence factors and neoplastic potential. In addition, a discussion and comparison of the histologic features found in solitary keratocysts, keratocysts associated with the basal-cell nevus--bifid rib syndrome, multiple keratocysts in patients with no other syndrome manifestations, and recurrent kerocysts is presented.

It is rare for solitary basal cell cancer not to be associated with the naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), xeroderma pigmentosum, an organoid nevus or X-ray therapy in children (to date 86 cases have been documented in the literature. Aetiologically, the tumours might be a forme fruste of the NBCCS or they might follow a somatic point mutation of keratinocytes. Up to now, data on the repair mechanism following UV-induced DNA damage are not available in these patients. We report on a 10-year-old boy with a solitary nodular basal cell cancer in the right malar region. Neither the pat

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is an infrequent multisystemic disease with an autosomal dominant trait, which depicted presence of numerous basal cell carcinoma in conjunction with multiorgan abnormalities. This syndrome may be diagnosed early by a dentist by routine radiographic exams in the first decade of life, since the keratocystic odontogenic tumour are usually one of the first manifestations of the syndrome. This article includes a case report of the GGS with regard to its history, incidence, etiology, features, investigations, diagnostic criteria, keratocystic odontogenic tumour and treat
