The Mediating Role of Blood Metabolites in the Association between Basal Metabolic Rate and Obstetrical Disorders: A Mendelian Randomization Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies suggest a link between Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and obstetrical disorders; however, causality remains unclear. We investigated the causal effects of BMR on 14 obstetric disorders and evaluated the potential mediating effects of blood metabolites in these relationships. METHODS: Using Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) summary data, we conducted both univariate and multivariable Mendelian Randomization (MVMR) analyses. The primary causal inference was based on Inverse Variance Weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, weighted median, and sensitivity analyses (Cochran's Q, M

Metabolic and Volumetric Alterations in the Basal Ganglia and the Cerebellum in Dopa-Responsive Dystonia in Symptomatic and Asymptomatic GCH1 Mutation Carriers.

BACKGROUND: Dopa-responsive dystonia is caused by pathogenic variants in the GCH1 gene. Although its clinical features and reduced penetrance are known, in vivo metabolic and structural alterations in symptomatic (sMC) and asymptomatic mutation carriers (aMC) remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: The aims were to characterize the volumetric and neurometabolic brain changes in GCH1 mutation carriers (MC) and explore their relationship with clinical severity. METHODS: We studied 20 sMCs, 5 aMCs, and 25 mutation-free healthy controls (HC) using volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combin

Untargeted serum metabolomics reveals metabolic signatures distinguishing basal cell carcinoma risk groups: an exploratory analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common skin cancer, yet reliable non-invasive markers for distinguishing low-risk (LR) from high-risk (HR) lesions are still lacking. Serum metabolomics provides a promising approach for capturing systemic biochemical changes associated with tumor behavior. In this study, we conducted untargeted serum metabolomic profiling using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry in 48 patients with histologically confirmed BCC. METHODS: The cohort included 38 HR and 10 LR lesions. After quality filtering, 99 polar a

Metabolic activity of the basal ganglia in parkinsonian syndromes in human and non-human primates: a cytochrome oxidase histochemistry study.

In order to examine the consequences of nigrostriatal denervation on metabolic and functional activity of the basal ganglia, we analysed the distribution of cytochrome oxidase, a metabolic marker for neuronal functional activity, throughout the different basal ganglia structures in parkinsonian syndromes. The study was performed using enzyme histochemistry and densitometric measurements in patients with Parkinson's disease and in monkeys rendered parkinsonian by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrydine (MPTP) intoxication. In MPTP-intoxicated monkeys compared to control animals, enzyme act

Comparisons between basal metabolic rate and diet-induced thermogenesis in different types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

1. Some patients with the emphysematous type of tobacco-related chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are hypermetabolic. Since the likely mechanism is the increased work of breathing, other groups of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should be similar. We have now measured basal metabolic rate and diet-induced thermogenesis in six patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with an arterial partial pressure of CO2 of less than 5 kPa (emphysematous), nine patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with an arterial partial pressure of CO2 of greater than 6 kPa

Metabolic response to three years of continuous, basal rate intravenous insulin infusion in type II diabetic patients.

We studied two obese type II diabetic patients before, during, and after 3 yr of continuous iv insulin infusion, delivered by means of totally implanted insulin infusion pumps. Tolerance of the devices was excellent, and no side-effects or episodes of significant hypoglycemia occurred. Glycosuria was eliminated, and mean 24-h plasma glucose and hemoglobin A1c levels decreased in both patients and remained in or near the normal range for 3 yr. Improvements were also noted in serum triglyceride concentrations and vitreous fluorescein concentrations after iv fluorescein injection. Euglycemic insu

Early Changes in Glutamate Metabolism and Perfusion in Basal Ganglia following Hypoxia-Ischemia in Neonatal Piglets: A Multi-Sequence 3.0T MR Study.

The excitotoxicity of glutamate metabolism as well as hemodynamic disorders of the brain are both risk factors for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain damage (HIBD). In the present study, changes in glutamate metabolism in the basal ganglia were detected by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) at 0-6, 8-12, 24-30, and 48-60 h after the induction of hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in newborn piglets. Meanwhile, correlation analysis was performed by combining the microcirculatory perfusion informations acquired by intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) scan to explore their possible interaction mechan

Effect of Glycemic Control on Chylomicron Metabolism and Correlation between Postprandial Metabolism of Plasma Glucose and Chylomicron in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Treated with Basal-bolus Insulin Therapy with or without Vildagliptin.

AIM: Glucagon-like peptide-1 can reduce both postprandial plasma glucose (PG) and chylomicron (CM) levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. However, there have been no reports regarding the relationship between the postprandial metabolism of PG and CM. METHODS: Patients with type 2 diabetes who were admitted for glycemic control were randomized to insulin alone (Ins; n=16) or insulin plus vildagliptin 100 mg (InsV; n=16) groups. The insulin dose was adjusted to maintain normal blood glucose levels. The daily profiles of serum TG, remnant lipoprotein cholesterol (RemL-C), and apolipoprotein B4

Heterogeneous CRISPR/Cas9 Editing of HMOX1 Is Associated with Altered Heme-Biliverdin Metabolism and Basal Stress-Associated Transcriptional Programs in Chicken LMH Cells.

Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), encoded by HMOX1, catalyzes the rate-limiting step of heme degradation and generates biliverdin, carbon monoxide, and ferrous iron, thereby linking heme turnover with redox regulation and stress-associated signaling. In birds, biliverdin is retained as a major heme-derived product, but the cellular consequences of HMOX1 perturbation remain insufficiently defined. Here, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated editing was used to generate a heterogeneous HMOX1-edited population in Chicken hepatocellular carcinoma-derived cells. The selected sgRNA reduced HO-1 protein abundance by approxima

Impact of L-DOPA treatment on regional cerebral blood flow and metabolism in the basal ganglia in a rat model of Parkinson's disease.

Large increases in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) have been measured in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) following the administration of L-DOPA, but the underlying mechanisms have remained unknown. In this study, rats with unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) lesions were used to compare patterns of rCBF and regional cerebral glucose utilisation (rCGU) in chronically L-DOPA-treated subjects following a final injection of L-DOPA or saline. The same animal model was used to the leakage of a blood-brain barrier (BBB) tracer molecule at 60 min vs. 24h following the last L-DOPA injectio

Body composition and basal metabolic rate in Hidradenitis Suppurativa: a Danish population-based and hospital-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested an association between Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS) and obesity. Obesity is often expressed as Body Mass Index (BMI). However, BMI lacks information on body composition. General obesity is a predictor of health status and cardiovascular risk, but body composition (e.g. abdominal fat) may be more so. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is an expression of resting metabolism and may serve as a complementary tool when assessing the possibly underlying metabolism behind a persons' body composition. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the body composition and basal metabol

Causal effects of basal metabolic rate and adiposity on obstructive sleep apnea: univariable, multivariable, and bidirectional Mendelian randomization evidence.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder strongly associated with obesity, yet the causal contribution of basal metabolic rate to OSA and the directionality of the OSA-metabolism relationship remain unclear. The objective of this study was to evaluate the independent and potential bidirectional causal relationships between basal metabolic rate and adiposity-related traits with obstructive sleep apnea using Mendelian randomization. METHODS: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) was performed using genome-wide association study data from predominantly European population

Closer correlation between serum triiodothyronine and basal metabolic rate during antithyroid drug treatment in patients with Graves' disease.

The correlations between serum triidothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), 131I-triiodothyronine resin sponge uptake (RT3U) or free thyroxine index (T7) and the basal metabolic rate (BMR) during antithyroid drug treatment in 86 patients with Graves' disease were investigated. Although serum T3, T4, RT3U and T7 during therapy with MMI showed significant positive correlations with BMR, the coefficient of correlation (r = 0.6088, P less than 0.001) between T3 and BMR was the highest of all. While the normal range of BMR in control subjects was between -1.9 and +14.9 (the range of mean +/- SD), the corr

Singing can improve speech function in aphasics associated with intact right basal ganglia and preserve right temporal glucose metabolism: Implications for singing therapy indication.

Clinically, we know that some aphasic patients can sing well despite their speech disturbances. Herein, we report 10 patients with non-fluent aphasia, of which half of the patients improved their speech function after singing training. We studied ten patients with non-fluent aphasia complaining of difficulty finding words. All had lesions in the left basal ganglia or temporal lobe. They selected the melodies they knew well, but which they could not sing. We made a new lyric with a familiar melody using words they could not name. The singing training using these new lyrics was performed for 30

Basal metabolic rate as a protective factor against osteoporosis: a multi-cohort longitudinal study from three international aging databases.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis is a major public health burden in aging populations; whether basal metabolic rate (BMR) is independently associated with incident osteoporosis independent of sarcopenia remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between BMR and incident osteoporosis and whether this relationship is modified by sarcopenia status and demographic factors. METHODS: We analyzed 17,836 adults aged ≥45 years from three longitudinal cohorts-ELSA (n = 3,293), HRS (n = 4,498), and SHARE (n = 10,045). BMR was estimated using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation and modeled as quartiles an

Correlation between basal metabolic rate, visceral fat and insulin resistance among type 2 diabetes mellitus with peripheral neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) means the amount of energy utilized by body in physical and psychological resting rate, after a night sleep, awake without any previous physical activity post meal (10 h after last meal) & neutral environment. In people with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) there is an increase in BMR which is said to be associated with the level of glycaemic control. So, the objective of the study was to find out the correlation between BMR, Insulin resistance and Visceral fat in T2DM with peripheral neuropathy. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 50 participants with T2DM w
