Anatomical and Volumetric Description of the Baird's Beaked Whale (Berardius bairdii) Brain from Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Baird's beaked whale, a member of the family Ziphiidae, is one of the largest odontocetes, second only to the sperm whale in body mass. The species is known for its exceptional diving abilities, but this behavior makes it difficult to observe in its natural habitat and has contributed to major gaps in our understanding of its biology, including its neuroanatomy. This study provides a detailed anatomical and quantitative description of the Baird's beaked whale brain. METHODS: The brain was examined using magnetic resonance imaging. External and internal neuroanatomical features w

ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING AND PATHOLOGIC FINDINGS OF THYROID LESIONS IN TWO SHORT-BEAKED ECHIDNAS (TACHYGLOSSUS ACULEATUS).

Two zoo-maintained short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus) had long histories of intermittent anorexia and lethargy. Case 1 presented with a recurrence of these signs after transfer to another facility and died shortly after arrival. A focal area of hyperattenuation within the paratracheal tissue of the cranial mediastinum was noted antemortem on CT. Postmortem, this corresponded with severe thyroid follicular hyperplasia with lymphoplasmacytic thyroiditis. Additional findings included a systemic fungal infection without an inflammatory response, suggesting underlying factors such as to

Fatal Streptococcus iniae Infection in a Juvenile Free-Ranging Short-Beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus delphis).

Streptococcus iniae (S. iniae) is a significant aquatic pathogen of farmed fish species, important zoonotic pathogen, and reported cause of disease in captive Amazon River dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus). Here we report S. iniae as the cause of subcutaneous abscesses, sepsis and mortality in a juvenile free-ranging short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) found deceased on a metropolitan Australian beach. Body surfaces were covered by multifocal, depressed, deep, irregular cutaneous ulcerations, which microscopically were characterised by ruptur

How to Make a Bird Skull: Major Transitions in the Evolution of the Avian Cranium, Paedomorphosis, and the Beak as a Surrogate Hand.

The avian skull is distinctive in its construction and in its function. Much of bird anatomical variety is expressed in the beak; but the beak itself, largely formed of the premaxillary bone, is set upon a shortened face and a bulbous, enlarged braincase. Here, we use original anatomical observations and reconstructions to describe the overall form of the avian skull in a larger context and to provide a general account of the evolutionary transformation from the early dinosaur skull-the skull of an archosaurian macropredator-to that of modern birds. Facial shortening, the enlargement of the br

Duckling short beak and dwarfism syndrome virus infection activates host innate immune response involving both DNA and RNA sensors.

Duckling short beak and dwarfism syndrome virus (SBDSV), a newly identified goose parvovirus, causes devastating disease in domestic waterfowl and considerable economic losses to Chinese waterfowl industry. The molecular pathogenesis of SBDSV infection, nature and dynamics of host immune responses against SBDSV infection remained elusive. In this study, we systematically explored the relative mRNA expression profiles of major innate immune-related genes in SBDSV infected duck embryo fibroblasts. We found that SBDSV infection effectively activated host innate immune responses and resulted in si

Genomic and pathogenic analysis of a Muscovy duck parvovirus strain causing short beak and dwarfism syndrome without tongue protrusion.

In 2008, clinical cases of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) caused by Muscovy duck parvovirus (MDPV) infection were found in mule duck and Taiwan white duck farms in Fujian, China. A MDPV LH strain causing duck SBDS without tongue protrusion was isolated in this study. Phylogenetic analysis show that the MDPV LH strain was clustered together with other MDPV strains, but divergent from GPV isolates. Two major fragment deletions were found in the inverted terminal repeats (ITR) of MDPV LH similar to the ones in the ITR of MDPV GX5, YY and SAAS-SHNH strains. To investigate the pathogenicit

Association between femoral localized cortical thickening ("beaking" or "flaring") and bisphosphonate duration in glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

INTRODUCTION: Glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) is the most common form of secondary osteoporosis, and bisphosphonates (BPs) are widely used for treatment. Localized cortical thickening (LCT, "beaking" or "flaring") is a characteristic radiographic finding and a potential precursor of atypical femoral fracture, a known complication of long-term BP use. The incidence of LCT and its association with BP duration in GIOP remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 86 outpatients with GIOP (mean age, 60.6 years; 62.8% women) were included. Femoral radiographs wer

Safety and immunogenicity of a novel psittacine beak and feather disease vaccine and optimisation of a thermostable spray-dried formulation.

Beak and feather disease virus (Circovirus parrot) associated Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) continues to pose a threat to wild and captive parrot populations globally, particularly in Australia where it has been listed as a Key Threatening Process to endangered psittacine bird species. A practical and safe vaccine delivery system for immunologically naïve nestling and fledgling birds is crucial for early seroconversion, to provide a fighting chance against high environmental load of wild type infections. Current experimental vaccines rely on recombinant capsid proteins delivered v

Finding beaked whales in the Foz do Amazonas basin: Visual and acoustic records of a deep diving cetacean.

Beaked whales, deep-diving cetaceans from the family Ziphiidae, exhibit cryptic behaviors, and data on these species in Brazilian waters are limited to strandings and isolated sightings. This study characterizes the occurrence and acoustic behavior of beaked whales in the Foz do Amazonas Basin using combined visual and passive acoustic monitoring along the Brazilian Equatorial Margin. Audio files were analyzed to identify clicks with frequency-modulated pulses, a diagnostic characteristic of beaked whales. The PAMpal package in R was used to calculate acoustic parameters, including peak freque

Unveiling the role of perineural telocytes in mechanosensation, structural insights into their association with herbst and ruffini corpuscles in the quail beak.

This study investigates the structural organization of telocytes (TCs) in the quail beak, focusing on their association with mechanoreceptors like Herbst and Ruffini corpuscles. By exploring these features, the study aim to expand the understanding of TCs' role in mechanosensation and sensory modulation. Paraffin sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin revealed TCs surrounding both Herbst and Ruffini corpuscles, as well as nerve fibers. Similar findings observed using Mallory Trichrome staining, which highlighted TCs around these sensory structures. Methylene Blue staining further confirme

Crassicaudiasis in three geographically and chronologically distant Cuvier's beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) stranded off Brazil.

The Cuvier's beaked whale (CBW; Ziphius cavirostris) is a cosmopolitan marine mammal found in deep tropical and temperate waters of all oceans. CBW strandings have been recorded sporadically in Brazil; however, there is lack of information available regarding their causes of stranding and/or death. Herein, we report the epidemiologic, pathologic, morphologic parasitologic features and molecular identification of arterial and renal crassicaudiasis by Crassicauda sp. in three geographically and chronologically distant CBW stranded off Brazil. CBW-1 was an adult male stranded dead in Rio Grande d

Metastatic mineralisation caused by vitamin D intoxication in hand-raised short-beaked echidnas (Tachyglossus aculeatus).

CASE REPORT: Two cases of metastatic mineralisation caused by dietary excess of vitamin D are reported in hand-raised short-beaked echidna (Tachyglossus aculeatus) puggles at the Australian Wildlife Health Centre. Oversupplementation was attributed to excessive levels of vitamin D in Wombaroo Echidna Milk Replacer fed to the puggles. No information exists regarding the naturally occurring vitamin D levels in echidna milk, but, given the low serum levels that have been observed in free-ranging animals, it is likely to be low. CONCLUSION: The vitamin D concentration in Wombaroo Echidna Milk Rep

First record of the anisakid nematode Anisakis nascettii in the Gervais' beaked whale Mesoplodon europaeus from Brazil.

Anisakid nematodes are parasites with an indirect life cycle, involving many hosts, including cetaceans that act as definitive hosts. Identification at species level is crucial for a better understanding of the epidemiology and ecology of these parasites, but an accurate diagnosis based only on morphology is difficult. In Brazil, genetic characterization of anisakids is still rare, with Anisakis typica and A. physeteris being the only two species identified by genetic markers until now. The definitive hosts of A. nascettii are Mesoplodon grayi, M. bowdoini, M. layardii and M. mirus. Geographic

Molecular and morphological evidence for the occurrence of Anisakis sp. A (Nematoda, Anisakidae) in the Blainville's beaked whale Mesoplodon densirostris.

Twenty-three adults (only one male) and two fourth-stage larvae of Anisakis, recovered from the stomach of a Blainville's beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) stranded in Galicia (NW Spain), were studied morphologically and molecularly. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and sequencing studies carried out on the ribosomal DNA spacers and on the cox2 mitochondrial gene confirm that these nematodes belong to the taxon Anisakis sp. A, which was previously detected as a larval stage in fishes from Madeiran waters. In addition, our molecular studies

Modified Two-Stage Approach for the Surgical Treatment of Type II Calcaneal Tuberosity Avulsion "Beak" Fracture: A Case Report.

Although infrequent, calcaneal tuberosity fractures pose a challenge for surgeons. The treatment goal is to establish stable fixation and restore function of the gastrocnemius-soleus-Achilles tendon complex. Type II fractures, otherwise known as "beak" fractures, are characterized by large avulsion fragments that extend from the posterior calcaneus at the Achilles tendon insertion. Without prompt diagnosis and reduction, these fractures can lead to significant soft tissue damage and severe edema, raising the risk of wound complications and making surgical fixation more difficult. While no wide

Extensor pollicis longus tendon rupture caused by a displaced dorsal "beak" fragment of Lister's tubercle in distal radius fractures.

INTRODUCTION: Ruptures of the extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon are a well-known complication of distal radius fractures (DRF). There are a lot of suspected mechanisms, including mechanical friction, vascular impairment, injury associated with reduction, and local adhesion. However, there have been limited reports about a closed rupture of the EPL tendon associated with a relatively large, displaced dorsal "beak" fracture fragment. We report about the management outcomes and clinical significance of closed ruptures of the EPL tendon caused by a displaced dorsal fracture fragment of beak-li

Transdural circumferential decompression for thoracic spinal stenosis caused by beak-type ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament: a technical note.

PURPOSE: Thoracic myelopathy caused by ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) in the thoracic spine is usually progressive and responds poorly to conservative therapy, making surgery the only effective treatment option. A variety of surgical procedures have been developed to treat thoracic OPLL. However, the optimal surgical approach for removal of thoracic OPLL remains unclear. In the present study, we described a newly modified posterior approach for the removal of OPLL: circular decompression via dural approach, and complete removal of OPLL can be achieved under direct v

Fatal tension pneumothorax secondary to verminous bronchopneumonia in a white-beaked dolphin: case report and brief literature review.

Pneumothorax is reported infrequently in marine mammals, most often secondary to physical or barometric trauma. We describe tension pneumothorax associated with verminous bronchopneumonia in a juvenile white-beaked dolphin stranded in Québec, Canada. Autopsy findings included a violent escape of air upon opening the pleural cavity, and white nematode-filled cystic nodules extending into the subpleural space and the lung parenchyma. One of these cysts had ruptured on the pleural surface. Numerous nematodes were observed in the lumen of main and secondary bronchi. Mediastinal lymph nodes were al

Exposure and response of satellite-tagged Blainville's beaked whales to mid-frequency active sonar off Kaua'i, Hawai'i.

BACKGROUND: Beaked whale response to Navy sonars is a global concern due to past stranding events coinciding with training activity. Often, controlled exposure experiments involve tagging cetaceans with short-term, high-resolution tags and exposing them to relatively short, single bouts of mid-frequency active sonar (MFAS). In contrast, longer-duration satellite-transmitting tags deployed around Navy ranges enables behavioral response studies of animals exposed to realistic Navy training activities over extended periods and spatial scales, with multiple exposures to different sources.
