Endophyte-based coatings enhance plant resistance and offer a sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides; however, their efficacy under nonsterilized soil conditions remains unclear. Here, we examined how nonsterilized soil conditions influence aphid resistance in wheat conferred by the endophytic fungus Beauveria bassiana strain YC. YC inoculation reduced Rhopalosiphum padi populations in both sterilized and nonsterilized soils, with stronger resistance observed under nonsterilized conditions, as evidenced by reduced aphid performance and altered feeding behavior. These effects were acc

Integrating entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) into crop protection programs requires ensuring their compatibility with insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides to enable simultaneous applications and reduce operational costs. Compatibility is typically assessed by incorporating pesticides into growth media and measuring toxicity through germination, growth, and sporulation (Biological Index). However, field applications mainly expose conidia directly to pesticides, potentially leading to mismatches between laboratory and real-world outcomes. Here, we evaluated the compatibility of 5 fungicides (cop

Chalcones, secondary plant metabolites, exhibit various biological properties. The introduction of a chlorine and a glucosyl substituent to the chalcone could enhance its bioactivity and bioavailability. Such compounds can be obtained through a combination of chemical and biotechnological methods. Therefore, 4-chloro-2'-hydroxychalcone and 5'-chloro-2'-hydroxychalcone were obtained by synthesis and then glycosylated in two filamentous fungi strains cultures, i.e., Isaria fumosorosea KCH J2 and Beauveria bassiana KCH J1.5. The main site of the glycosylation of both compounds by I. fumosorosea K

Insect predators are the most important natural enemies of the crapemyrtle bark scale (CMBS) in the USA. Mycopesticides (biocontrol fungi) are considered an IPM tool to increase CMBS mortality; however, their impacts on CMBS predators are unknown. The objectives of this study were to assess the abundance and diversity of CMBS natural enemies in Louisiana; evaluate the impacts of mycopesticides on survival of CMBS predators by life stage; and determine if entomopathogenic spores delivered to crapemyrtles are transferred to predators under field conditions. The mycopesticides Ancora® (Isaria fum

Entomopathogenic fungi and their insect hosts represent a model system for examining invertebrate-pathogen coevolutionary selection processes. Here we report the characterization of competing components of an arms race consisting of insect protective antimicrobial compounds and evolving fungal mechanisms of detoxification. The insect pathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana has a remarkably wide host range; however, some insects are resistant to fungal infection. Among resistant insects is the tenebrionid beetle Tribolium castaneum that produces benzoquinone-containing defensive secretions. Reduce

Chlorinated flavonoids represent a unique subclass of flavonoids with chlorine substituents. The incorporation of chlorine atoms and glucosyl moieties may influence their bioavailability, bioactivity, and pharmacological potential. In this study, 2'-chloroflavone, 3'-chloroflavone, 4'-chloroflavone, and 6-chloroflavone were synthesized and biotransformed using entomopathogenic fungi cultures (Isaria fumosorosea KCH J2 and Beauveria bassiana KCH J1.5) to obtain novel glycosylated derivatives. Pharmacokinetic properties and drug-likeness were predicted using cheminformatics tools. Antimicrobial

Insect stress-responsive peptides (SRPs) orchestrate development and immunity, yet their roles in the globally invasive pest Spodoptera frugiperda remain poorly understood. Here, we identify three SRP genes, SfSRP1, SfSRP2, and SfSRP3, that are strongly induced after Beauveria bassiana infection. Each encodes a 115-119 aa peptide with a conserved five-β-strand scaffold and divergent loop regions. RT-qPCR analysis reveals that all three are most abundant in hemocytes and head tissues, with stage-specific peaks at 2nd to 4th instars. Upon challenge with fungal or bacterial pathogens, SfSRP1 and

Filamentous fungal insect pathogens represent a source of biological insecticides and acaricides formulated using intact cells, such as conidia or other spores. These mycoinsecticides infect arthropod pests through cuticular penetration. In field application, formulated fungal cells are exposed to environmental stresses, including solar UV irradiation, high temperature, and applied chemical herbicides and fungicides, as well as stress from host immune defenses. These stresses often result in accumulation of toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS), generating oxidative stress to the fungal cells an

BACKGROUND: Fungal keratitis is a refractory disease, and cases caused by filamentous fungi are particularly challenging to manage. Considering that the depth of corneal infiltration influences both treatment and visual prognosis, the ability of causative fungi to grow at corneal and anterior chamber temperatures was hypothesized to contribute to the progression of lesions from the deep cornea into the anterior chamber. This study investigated the relationship between the growth temperature of filamentous fungi isolated from keratitis and the depth of corneal infiltration.
METHODS: Eight case

BACKGROUND: Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a highly adaptable invasive pest that causes significant economic losses. Long-term chemical control strategies have led to high levels of insecticide resistance and severe environmental risks. C-type lectins (CTLs), key pattern recognition receptors in insect innate immunity, are named for their calcium-dependent carbohydrate recognition domains (CRDs) and they play a critical role in detecting and binding to foreign pathogens. This study aims to identify B. dorsalis CTLs (BdCTLs) and investigate their roles in pathogen defense.

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster combats microbial infection by producing a battery of effector peptides that are secreted into the haemolymph. Technical difficulties prevented the investigation of these short effector genes until the recent advent of the CRISPR/CAS era. As a consequence, many putative immune effectors remain to be formally described, and exactly how each of these effectors contribute to survival is not well characterized. Here we describe a novel Drosophila antifungal peptide gene that we name Baramicin A. We show that BaraA encodes a precursor protein cleaved into multi

BACKGROUND: Ticks are significant vectors of various pathogens affecting humans and livestock, necessitating effective control strategies. The widespread use of chemical acaricides has led to resistance development and environmental concerns, highlighting the need for sustainable alternatives. Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF), particularly Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana, have emerged as promising biocontrol agents due to their pathogenicity against arthropods. This study evaluates the efficacy of these fungi in controlling tick populations under laboratory and field conditions.

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae (Arachnida: Dermanyssidae) is a pest that causes significant economic loss in laying hens for which control methods are limited. In this study, the effects of 20 indigenous fungal strains on poultry red mites in chicken farms were investigated. All experiments were conducted under laboratory condition at 28 ± 1 °C and 80 ± 5% humidity. A screening test showed that Metharizium flavoviride strain As-2 and Beauveria bassiana strain Pa4 had the greatest measured effect on D. gallinae at 1 × 107 conidia/ml 7 days after application. Culex quinquefasciatus is an important mosquito vector responsible for the transmission of filarial worms, arthropod-borne viruses like Oropouche, St. Louis encephalitis, and West Nile and protozoans that cause avian malaria. Due to insecticide resistance documented in Cx. quinquefasciatus populations worldwide, integrated vector management programs can benefit from new strategies to control this species. The In2Care Mosquito Station (In2Care station), a commercially available dissemination station containing pyriproxyfen (PPF) and Beauveria bassiana spores, has been shown to be effective agai
