Reduced baroreflex control of heart period after bed rest is normalized by acute plasma volume restoration.

Adaptation to spaceflight or head-down-tilt bed rest leads to hypovolemia and an apparent abnormality of baroreflex regulation of cardiac period. In a previous study, we demonstrated that both chronic (2 wk) head-down-tilt bed rest and acute induced hypovolemia led to similar impairments in spontaneous baroreflex control of cardiac period, suggesting that a reduction in plasma volume may be responsible for this abnormality after bed rest. Therefore we hypothesized that this reduced "baroreflex function" could be restored by intravenous volume infusion equivalent to the reduction in plasma volu

Skeletal muscle properties in long COVID and ME/CFS differ from those induced by bed rest.

Patients with long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) suffer from post-exertional malaise. The accompanying physical inactivity may contribute to a lower aerobic capacity and may explain skeletal muscle adaptations in these patients. Here, we compare whole-body exercise responses and skeletal muscle adaptations after strict 60-day bed rest in healthy people with those in long COVID and ME/CFS patients, and healthy age- and sex-matched controls. Bed rest alters respiratory and cardiovascular responses to maximal exercise, which are dissimilar in patients. Bed

Bed Rest as a Protective Factor for Subdural Hematoma in Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Subdural hematoma (SDH) is a potentially life-threatening complication in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH). Though bed rest is the basis of conservative treatment, no clear evidence exists regarding the association between bed rest and the later complication of SDH in these patients. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the association between bed rest and SDH development in patients with SIH. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study was conducted from March 2013 through December 2019. Four hundred twenty adult patients diagnosed with SIH were enrolled. Cli

Capillary rarefaction during bed rest is proportionally less than fibre atrophy and loss of oxidative capacity.

BACKGROUND: Muscle disuse from bed rest or spaceflight results in losses in muscle mass, strength and oxidative capacity. Capillary rarefaction may contribute to muscle atrophy and the reduction in oxidative capacity during bed rest. Artificial gravity may attenuate the negative effects of long-term space missions or bed rest. The aim of the present study was to assess (1) the effects of bed rest on muscle fibre size, fibre type composition, capillarization and oxidative capacity in the vastus lateralis and soleus muscles after 6 and 55 days of bed rest and (2) the effectiveness of artificial

Head-Down Tilt Bed Rest Studies as a Terrestrial Analog for Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome.

Astronauts who undergo prolonged periods of spaceflight may develop a unique constellation of neuro-ocular findings termed Spaceflight Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS). SANS is a disorder that is unique to spaceflight and has no terrestrial equivalent. The prevalence of SANS increases with increasing spaceflight duration and although there have been residual, structural, ocular changes noted, no irreversible or permanent visual loss has occurred after SANS, with the longest spaceflight to date being 14 months. These microgravity-induced findings are being actively investigated by the Un

Perceived stress and support preferences during bed rest in twin pregnancies: A cross-sectional online survey.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the most prominent sources of stress, examine correlates of stress, and assess support preferences to inform future interventions among women pregnant with twins who are on bed rest. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was administered to pregnant and postpartum women who were recommended bed rest during their twin pregnancy. Total stress while on bedrest was assessed using an adapted version of the Antepartum Hospital Stressors Inventory (AHSI). Bivariate analyses were used to compare total stress scores across participant characteristics using linea

Brain plasticity and sensorimotor deterioration as a function of 70 days head down tilt bed rest.

BACKGROUND: Adverse effects of spaceflight on sensorimotor function have been linked to altered somatosensory and vestibular inputs in the microgravity environment. Whether these spaceflight sequelae have a central nervous system component is unknown. However, experimental studies have shown spaceflight-induced brain structural changes in rodents' sensorimotor brain regions. Understanding the neural correlates of spaceflight-related motor performance changes is important to ultimately develop tailored countermeasures that ensure mission success and astronauts' health. METHOD: Head down-tilt b

Effect of rowing ergometry and oral volume loading on cardiovascular structure and function during bed rest.

This study examined the effectiveness of a short-duration but high-intensity exercise countermeasure in combination with a novel oral volume load in preventing bed rest deconditioning and orthostatic intolerance. Bed rest reduces work capacity and orthostatic tolerance due in part to cardiac atrophy and decreased stroke volume. Twenty seven healthy subjects completed 5 wk of -6 degree head down bed rest. Eighteen were randomized to daily rowing ergometry and biweekly strength training while nine remained sedentary. Measurements included cardiac mass, invasive pressure-volume relations, maximal

Muscle atrophy and changes in spinal morphology: is the lumbar spine vulnerable after prolonged bed-rest?

STUDY DESIGN: prospective longitudinal study. OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the effect of bed-rest on the lumbar musculature and soft-tissues. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: earlier work has suggested that the risk of low back injury is higher after overnight bed-rest or spaceflight. Changes in spinal morphology and atrophy in musculature important in stabilizing the spine could be responsible for this, but there are limited data on how the lumbar musculature and vertebral structures are affected during bed-rest. METHODS: nine male subjects underwent 60-days head-down tilt bed-rest as part of the sec

Correlation dimension of EEG slow-wave activity during sleep in narcoleptic patients under bed rest conditions.

The calculation of the correlation dimension (D2) was applied to the study of the profiles of EEG slow-wave activity in nine narcoleptic subjects and nine sex- and age-matched control subjects who, following a baseline night recording, were maintained on 16 h of diurnal sleep deprivation and, thereafter, submitted to a 32-h bed rest protocol. The reversibility test allowed us to reject the null hypothesis that the time series considered in our study were generated by a static transformation of a linear Gaussian random process. Similarly, all profiles showed a positive largest Lyapunov exponent

Intracranial aneurysms and subarachnoid hemorrhage - report on a randomized treatment study. IV-A. regulated bed rest.

Three weeks of regulated bed rest was one of four treatments evaluated in the Cooperative Aneurysm Study. A total of 187 patients with a recently ruptured intracranial aneurysm had subarachnoid hemorrhage confirmed by lumbar puncture. A group of 124 patients were assigned to treatment within 7 days after the bleed, 49 between 8 and 21 days, and 14 between 22 days and 92 days. During the mean follow-up interval of 6.5 years, mortality was 55.1%. A proved rebleed was the cause of death in 34.2%, progressive deterioration from aneurysm rupture in 8.0%, and a suspected rebleed in 4.8%. A total of

Resting-state causal connectivity of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis in panic disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is associated with anticipatory anxiety, a sustained threat response that appears to be related to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST). Individuals with panic disorder may demonstrate significant differences in causal connectivity of the BNST in comparison to healthy controls. To test this hypothesis, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to identify aberrant causal connectivity of the BNST in PD patients. 19 PD patients and 18 healthy controls (HC) matched for gender, age and education were included. Granger causality analysis (GCA)

The effects of hospital admission for bed rest on the duration of twin pregnancy: a randomised trial.

212 women with twin pregnancies were randomly allocated either to receive advice to rest in hospital from 32 weeks' gestation until delivery, or to be part of a control group in which hospital admission was offered selectively (and, on average, 5 weeks later). Preterm delivery was more common among women admitted routinely for bed rest than among controls, and this difference was unlikely to have occurred by chance. There is at present no scientifically acceptable evidence that this common, disruptive, and expensive obstetric policy does more good than harm.

The relative efficacy of bed rest, cervical suture, and no treatment in the management of twin pregnancy.

We compared 60 twin pregnancies treated by bed rest, 37 treated by cervical suture and 36 receiving no active treatment. The incidence of the spontaneous onset of labour before 36 weeks of gestation, the mean gestational age at delivery, mean birth weights of the first and second twins and the incidence of 'small-for-dates babies' were similar in all three groups.

Plasma proteome profiling of healthy subjects undergoing bed rest reveals unloading-dependent changes linked to muscle atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Inactivity and unloading induce skeletal muscle atrophy, loss of strength and detrimental metabolic effects. Bed rest is a model to study the impact of inactivity on the musculoskeletal system. It not only provides information for bed-ridden patients care, but it is also a ground-based spaceflight analogue used to mimic the challenges of long space missions for the human body. In both cases, it would be desirable to develop a panel of biomarkers to monitor muscle atrophy in a minimally invasive way at point of care to limit the onset of muscle loss in a personalized fashion. What is the evidence for using bed rest as part of hospital treatment of severe anorexia nervosa?

Bed rest is commonly used on medical and paediatric wards as part of nursing management of the physically compromised patient with severe anorexia nervosa. The aim of this study was to review the evidence base of bed rest as an intervention in the management of severe anorexia nervosa. We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, PsychInfo, CINAHL, HMIC, AMED, HBE, BNI and guidelines written in English until April 2018 using the following terms: bed rest and anorexia nervosa. After exclusion of duplicates, three guidelines and eight articles were included. The papers were methodologically heterogeneou

Arterial and venous cerebral blood flow responses to long-term head-down bed rest in male volunteers.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? A heterogeneous cerebral blood flow (CBF) response in the cerebral arteries has been demonstrated in several physiological conditions, and it might be attributable to different physiological properties. However, the whole cerebral haemodynamic response to weightlessness remains unknown. What is the main finding and its importance? Long-term head-down bed rest caused a heterogeneous CBF response between the anterior and posterior cerebral arteries and between the cerebral arteries and veins. Especially, in contrast to the anterior cerebr
