Bee venom acupuncture and herbal medicine for hand eczema: Two case reports and an in vivo study.

INTRODUCTION: Eczema and contact dermatitis are relatively common, non-life-threatening disease, but can reduce the patient's quality-of-life when it becomes chronic. This study describes two cases of bee venom acupuncture (BVA) and herbal medicine (San Wu Huangqin decoction; SWH) co-treatment for hand eczema and contact dermatitis, then confirms the effect of the combination therapy in an in vivo model of eczema. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old female (case 1) and a 33-year-old male (case 2) presented to the clinic with symptoms of itching and erythema (case 1), and scaliness (case 2) on bo

Mast cell-derived prostaglandin D2 limits the subcutaneous absorption of honey bee venom in mice.

Mast cells play pivotal roles in innate host defenses against venom. Activated mast cells release large amounts of prostaglandin D2 (PGD2). However, the role of PGD2 in such host defense remains unclear. We found that c-kit-dependent and c-kit-independent mast cell-specific hematopoietic prostaglandin D synthase (H-pgds) deficiency significantly exacerbated honey bee venom (BV)-induced hypothermia and increased mortality rates in mice. BV absorption via postcapillary venules in the skin was accelerated upon endothelial barrier disruption resulting in increased plasma venom concentrations. Thes

Beneficial Effect of Bee Venom and Its Major Components on Facial Nerve Injury Induced in Mice.

Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is a health problem that affects many people worldwide. This study is the first to evaluate the potential effect of bee venom (BV) and its major components in a model of PNI in the mouse. For that, the BV used in this study was analyzed using UHPLC. All animals underwent a distal section-suture of facial nerve branches, and they were randomly divided into five groups. Group 1: injured facial nerve branches without any treatment. Group 2: the facial nerve branches were injured, and the normal saline was injected similarly as in the BV-treated group. Group 3: injure

PGD2 /CRTH2 signaling promotes acquired immunity against bee venom by enhancing IgE production.

IgE-dependent/independent activation of mast cell (MC) has been assumed to play a host defensive role against venom injection in skin. However, its detailed mechanisms remain unknown. We aimed to investigate the contribution of MC-derived prostaglandin D2 (PGD2 )-mediated signaling in host defense against bee venom (BV). To achieve this, we utilized gene-deficient mice of a PGD2 receptor, chemoattractant receptor-homologous molecule expressed on Th2 cells (CRTH2). We first confirmed that subcutaneous injection of BV produced PGD2 equally in wild-type (WT) and CRTH2-deficient (Crth2-/- ) mice s

Melittin-A Natural Peptide from Bee Venom Which Induces Apoptosis in Human Leukaemia Cells.

Bee venom is a very complex mixture produced and secreted by the honeybee (Apis mellifera). Melittin is a major component of bee venom that accounts for about 52% of its dry mass. A vast number of studies have been dedicated to the effects of melittin's regulation of apoptosis and to the factors that induce apoptosis in various types of cancer such as breast, ovarian, prostate, lung. The latest evidence indicates its potential as a therapeutic agent in the treatment of leukaemia. The aim of our present study is to evaluate melittin's ability to induce apoptosis in leukaemia cell lines of diffe

Low virulence potential and in vivo transformation ability in the honey bee venom treated Clinostomum complanatum.

The helminth parasites possess great capabilities to adapt themselves within their hosts and also develop strategies to render the commonly used anthelmintics ineffective leading to the development of resistance against these drugs. Besides using anthelmintics the natural products have also been tested for their anti-parasitic effects. Therapeutic efficacy of honey bee venom (HBV) has been tested in various ailments including some protozoal infections but very little is known about its anthelmintic properties. To investigate the anthelmintic effect of HBV the excysted progenetic metacercariae

Inhibitory effects of bee venom on Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory skin disease in an animal model.

Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is a major contributing factor to the inflammatory component of acne. The many prescription medications for acne allow for a large number of potential combination treatments. However, several antibiotics, apart from their antibacterial effects, exert side‑effects, such as the suppression of host inflammatory responses. Purified bee venom (BV) is a natural toxin produced by honeybees (Apis mellifera L.). BV has been widely used as a traditional medicine for various diseases. In the present study, to investigate the therapeutic effects of BV against P. acnes-in

Panurgines, novel antimicrobial peptides from the venom of communal bee Panurgus calcaratus (Hymenoptera: Andrenidae).

Three novel antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), named panurgines (PNGs), were isolated from the venom of the wild bee Panurgus calcaratus. The dodecapeptide of the sequence LNWGAILKHIIK-NH₂ (PNG-1) belongs to the category of α-helical amphipathic AMPs. The other two cyclic peptides containing 25 amino acid residues and two intramolecular disulfide bridges of the pattern Cys8-Cys23 and Cys11-Cys19 have almost identical sequence established as LDVKKIICVACKIXPNPACKKICPK-OH (X=K, PNG-K and X=R, PNG-R). All three peptides exhibited antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative

Ultrastructural alterations in cortex of adrenal gland caused by the toxic effect of bee (Apis mellifera) venom.

Bee accidents incidence is underestimated because many people do not consult to the physicians. Here it is described for the first time the severe mice adrenal gland damage induced by Apis mellifera venom. Biopsy specimens were obtained from mice adrenal gland and after sample preparation observed in Hitachi H-7100 electron microscope. In this work the ultrastructural analysis showed, 6 h after injection, a non homogeneous smooth endothelial reticulum, and in some places loss of plasma membrane. The fenestrae spaces were bigger and detritus in the capillary lumen were observed. Erythrocytes we

Bee venom induces high histamine or high leukotriene C4 release in skin of sensitized beekeepers.

Histamine is the principal mediator released in the skin during immediate bee venom allergy but the significance of cysteinyl leukotrienes in these reactions is not known. We measured skin histamine and cysteinyl leukotriene release induced by bee venom in six sensitized beekeepers with the skin microdialysis technique. The skin was dialyzed for 2 h after skin prick test with bee venom, and the release of histamine and leukotriene C4 (LTC4) into the microdialysis fractions was measured. Leukotriene E4 (LTE) and methylhistamine excretion into the urine was assayed and whole blood histamine rele

Detection of nerve growth factor (NGF) in venoms from diverse source: isolation and characterization of NGF from the venom of honey bee (Apis melifera).

Pearce (1973) reported the absence of NGF in the venoms of bees, scorpions, spiders, and toads. Contrary to the negative findings in the past, results of this research prove the presence of NGF in bee and scorpion venoms. Venoms from various species of snake, bee, scorpion, and toad were screened by two methods: immunological test ELISA using antibodies versus mouse NGF and venom NGF and the biological test of neurite outgrowth, the characteristic of NGF on PC cells. The presence of NGF was detected in snake, bee, and scorpion venoms, but not in toad venom by these tests. NGF was isolated from

Therapeutic potential of infrared-treated bee venom: enhanced multi-faceted bioactivity via compositional modulation.

Natural products are rich therapeutic sources, yet their translation into effective medicines remains challenging. Bee venom (BV) contains a diverse repertoire of bioactive molecules, but gentle, scalable methods to enhance its functionality are limited. This study, therefore, investigates a novel, solvent-free, post-extraction infrared (IR) conditioning step to fine-tune BV's composition and bioactivity. BV was irradiated (230 V, 50 Hz, 150 W) and compared to native extract using GC-MS and bioactivity assays. GC-MS revealed selective compositional tuning, with significant enrichment (p ≤ 0.05

Melittin in AllergoOncology: From Honey Bee Venom to Anti-Cancer Therapeutic Innovation-An EAACI Position Paper.

Honey bee venom (HBV) represents a unique interface between allergy and oncology, exemplifying how allergen-derived molecules can be repurposed as anti-cancer agents. Melittin, the principal component of HBV, accounts for 40%-50% of its dry weight and is responsible for most of its biological activity. Beyond its well-established role as a potent allergen and mast cell activator, melittin displays broad anti-tumour properties across multiple cancer models. Preclinical evidence demonstrates that melittin induces cancer cell death through membrane disruption, mitochondrial and death receptor-med

Efficient synthesis, stability-guided optimization and anti-ulcerative colitis evaluation of bee venom peptide melittin.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is considered as one of the most prevalent inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), which increases risks for colectomy and colorectal cancer. However, due to moderate efficiency and potential side effects of first-line drugs, it is desirable to develop more efficient anti-UC agents. The natural peptide Melittin, which is the main active ingredient of bee venom, is considered as a potential scaffold for the development of anti-UC drugs. Nevertheless, as a linear amphipathic peptide, Melittin could be degraded by various proteases, suffering from poor stability and short half

Low-dose Bee Venom as a Potential Therapeutic Agent Against Human Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia Cells.

Bee venom is secreted by a gland in the abdominal cavity of bees. The venom, especially that of honeybees, contains certain enzymes and peptides that, when administered in high doses, are effective against various diseases. Peptides such as melittin and phospholipase A2 can target various cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the antiproliferative effects of administering low-dose bee venom in K-562 chronic myeloid leukaemia cells. Our proteomic study revealed regional variation of the content of bee venom and high levels of melittin, apamin and secapin, as well as phospholipase A2 and

Bee venom in pharmacology: Mechanistic insights from pro-inflammatory trigger to anti-inflammatory therapeutic agent.

Bee venom (BV) is inherently toxic, traditionally recognized for provoking pain, edema, and hypersensitivity via components such as melittin and bee venom-derived phospholipase A₂ (bvPLA₂). Paradoxically, these same peptides exhibit potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities when administered in carefully controlled doses or optimized formulations. Preclinical studies, as summarized across multiple disease models, consistently demonstrate suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines, inhibition of NF-κB signaling, modulation of T-cell and macrophage responses, and enhancement of ant
