Recent advances in understanding the personality underpinnings of impulsive behavior and their role in risk for addictive behaviors.

Impulsivity has been a widely explored construct, particularly as a personality-based risk factor for addictive behaviors. The authors review evidence that (a) there is no single impulsivity trait; rather, there are at least five different personality traits that dispose individuals to rash or impulsive action; (b) the five traits predict different behaviors longitudinally; for example, the emotion-based urgency traits predict problematic involvement in several risky behaviors and sensation seeking instead predicts the frequency of engaging in such behaviors; (c) the traits can be measured in

[Different explanatory models for addictive behavior in Turkish and German youths in Germany: significance for prevention and treatment].

Due to cultural and social barriers, immigrants seldom frequent centers for information, counseling, and treatment of addictive disorders. We examine cultural differences in the explanatory models of addictive behavior among Turkish and German youths in Germany with statistical devices that map the concepts associated with problems of addiction. Relevant differences were found between the disorder concepts of Turkish and German youth. German but not Turkish youths classified eating disorders among severe addictive disorders and associated them with embarrassment and shame. Concerning substance

Dietary Practices, Addictive Behavior and Bowel Habits and Risk of Early Onset Colorectal Cancer: a Case Control Study.

BACKGROUND: The abrupt rise of colorectal cancer in developing countries is raising concern in healthcare settings. Studies on assessing relationships with modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors in the Pakistani population have been limited. The present investigation was designed to examine associations of dietary practices, addictive behavior and bowel habits in developing colorectal cancer (CRC) among patients in a low-resource setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An age-gender matched case control study was conducted from October 2011 to July 2015 in Karachi, Pakistan. Cases were from the sur

Comparison of personality traits in pedophiles, abstinent opiate addicts, and healthy controls: considering pedophilia as an addictive behavior.

To investigate the model of pedophilia as a disorder of addictive behavior, pedophiles and chemically addicted individuals were compared on personality traits potentially associated with impaired behavioral inhibition. Twenty-nine pedophiles, 25 opiate addicts (OA's), and 27 healthy controls were administered the Barratt Impulsivity Scale, Hare Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R), and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-V for Axis-II. OA's scored higher than either pedophiles or controls on the Barratt. Pedophiles and OA's scored higher than controls on all 3 Psychopathy Checklist-Revised

The relationship between psychological distress and dependence on addictive substances and behaviors: A survey of public attitudes toward addiction.

AIM: To examine the self-medication hypothesis, which posits that individuals experiencing greater psychological distress tend to engage in addictive substances and behaviors (ASBs). METHODS: We analyzed data from a public survey on addiction awareness. Psychological distress was measured using the K6 scale, and its association with the frequency of use of the nine ASBs was assessed. We also observed a tendency for the usage frequency to vary by age group across ASBs. Furthermore, a general linear model (GLM) was employed with usage frequency as the dependent variable, K6 scores and type of A

Neurophysiological and therapeutic efficacy of somatic psychotherapies in addiction: primary behavioral focus with exploratory cross-addiction analyses.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral addictions exhibit convergent dysregulation of meso-striatal reward, cortico-limbic stress, and executive-control circuits. Top-down interventions such as CBT demonstrate moderate, often transient effects, leaving autonomic dysregulation insufficiently targeted. Somatic and body-oriented psychotherapies (SBPs) may remediate these deficits via bottom-up interoceptive and autonomic mechanisms, but quantitative synthesis is lacking. METHODS: Nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) (total N = 573) of yoga, mindfulness, or somatic interventions for gambling, gaming, or comp

Cracking the code: unveiling the nexus between atopic dermatitis and addictive behavior: a cross-sectional exploration of risk factors.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) stands as a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disorder with a global reach. Beyond its cutaneous manifestations, AD is accompanied by comorbidities and psychological issues, significantly compromising the overall quality of life for individuals who suffer from AD. Previous research has evidenced a heightened prevalence of addictive disorders among dermatological patients when compared to the general population. Considering these findings, this study endeavors to examine the prevalence of addictive disorders among AD patients and, furthermore, to discern potential risk

[18F]-Fluorodeoxyglucose-Positron Emission Tomography in Rats with Prolonged Cocaine Self-Administration Suggests Potential Brain Biomarkers for Addictive Behavior.

The DSM5-based dimensional diagnostic approach defines substance use disorders on a continuum from recreational drug use to habitual and ultimately addicted behavior. Biomarkers that are indicative of recreational drug use and addicted behavior are lacking. We performed a translational [18F]-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) study in the multi-dimensional 0/3crit model of cocaine addiction. Addict-like (3crit) and non-addict-like (0crit) rats, which shared identical life conditions and levels of cocaine self-administration, were acquired for FDG-PET under baseline condi

Selenoprotein P in a Rodent Model of Exercise; Theorizing Its Interaction with Brain Reward Dysregulation, Addictive Behavior, and Aging.

Exercise promotes health and wellness, including its operation as a protective factor against a variety of psychological, neurological, and chronic diseases. Selenium and its biomarker, selenoprotein P (SEPP1), have been implicated in health, including cancer prevention, neurological function, and dopamine signaling. SEPP1 blood serum levels were compared with a one-way ANOVA between sedentary (SED), moderately exercised (MOD) [10 m/min starting at 10 min, increasing to 60 min], and high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercised rats [30 min in intervals of 2-min followed by a 1-min break,

Education in addictive behaviors: The effects of the 'DIPENDE!' video with early adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The present study investigated the efficacy of the "DIPENDE!" video in middle school students. We hypothesized that exposure to the video in the Experimental Group (EG) would (a) increase correct cognitions about addictions (towards alcohol, nicotine, and problematic smartphone use), (b) reduce intentions to engage in these behaviours in risky situations, and (c) not produce any unintended increase in craving. METHODS: An environmental sustainability video was developed for the Control Group (CG). Both videos were designed according to the conceptual change model within a metacogn
