Characterization of Intracranial Pressure Behavior in Chronic Epileptic Animals: A Preliminary Study.

Intracranial pressure (ICP) is a major neurological parameter in animals and humans. ICP is a function of the relationship between the contents of the cranium (brain parenchyma, cerebrospinal fluid, and blood) and the volume of the skull. Increased ICP can cause serious physiological effects or even death in patients who do not quickly receive proper care, which includes ICP monitoring. Epilepsies are a set of central nervous system disorders resulting from abnormal and excessive neuronal discharges, usually associated with hypersynchronism and/or hyperexcitability. Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE

Exercise Enhances the Behavioral Responses to Acute Stress in an Animal Model of PTSD.

INTRODUCTION: This study examined the effects of endurance exercise on the behavioral response to stress and patterns of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and δ-opioid receptor (phospho-DOR) expression in the hippocampus. METHODS: Animals ran on a treadmill at 15 m·min, 5 min·d gradually increasing to 20 min·d, 5 d·wk for 6 wk. After training, one group of animals was exposed to a predator scent stress (PSS) protocol for 10 min. Outcome measurements included behavior in an elevated plus-maze (EPM) and acoustic startle response (ASR) 7 d after exposure to stress.

Behavioral effects of acclimatization to restraint protocol used for awake animal imaging.

Functional MRI in awake rats involves acclimatization to restraint to minimize motion. We designed a study to examine the effects of an acclimatization protocol (5 days of restraint, 60 min per day) on the emission of 22-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations and performance in a forced swim test (FST). Our results showed that USV calls are reduced significantly by days 3, 4 and 5 of acclimatization. Although the rats showed less climbing activity (and more immobility) in FST on day 5 compared to the 1st day of restraint acclimatization, the difference was not detected once the animals were given a 2-we

Memantine partly rescues behavioral and cognitive deficits in an animal model of neurodegeneration.

Memantine, a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist, is used for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and off-label as an anti-depressant. Here we investigated possible anti-depressant, cognitive enhancing and neuroprotective effects of memantine in the olfactory bulbectomized (OBX) rat. OBX is used as a screening model for antidepressants and shows cognitive disturbances. In Experiment I, memantine treatment started 14 days after OBX surgery (this setup is similar to what we use for screening of potential antidepressants) and 2 days before surgery in experiment II. In both experiments,

Behavioral and neurochemical studies in distinct animal models of ethanol's motivational effects.

In the last decades, the goal of creating a unique and complete model of alcohol use and alcoholism has been replaced by a myriad of different animal models, each addressing a specific feature of problematic alcohol consumption. This mini-review highlights selected findings in the field of alcohol abuse and dependence, as found through the use of animal models. There are models (e.g., drinking in the dark, drinking after alcohol adulteration or alcohol deprivation) in which animals self-administer alcohol, that are useful to analyze determinants and consequences of binge drinking, progression

A novel computerized system for analyzing motor and social behavior in groups of animals.

We present here the VMB Tracking System, a novel method for tracking locomotor activity, posture, thigmotactic scanning behavior and social interactions of up to eight animals at a time, at a high resolution (up to+/-0.1 mm). We used a commercially available computerized system that is considerably cheaper than other available methods. This system utilizes a basic personal computer controlling three transponders ('towers') fixed in space above the tested area, where animals as small as rats stroll freely in their normal habitat or in an experimental arena. Each tower emits infra-red (IR) pulse

Preprocessing Strategies for Animal Behavior Classification Using Inertial Sensors: Effects of Filtering, Normalization, and Data Representation.

Automatic classification of livestock behaviors, including feeding, rumination, standing, lying, walking, and drinking, using wearable accelerometers has become an important tool in precision livestock farming (PLF). However, the influence of preprocessing strategies on classification performance and computational efficiency remains poorly understood. This study investigated the effects of filtering, normalization, data representation, and machine learning algorithms using five accelerometer datasets comprising 3,533,974 records collected from different livestock species and sampling frequenci

Effects of partial cage dividers on animal welfare and social behavior in California mice (Peromyscus californicus).

California mice (Peromyscus californicus) are an important model species for studying social behaviors that are not readily expressed in standard laboratory mouse and rat lines. Under natural conditions, this species is highly territorial, and both males and females exhibit high levels of aggression in laboratory conditions. Like other rodent species, fighting among cage-mates can create animal welfare problems for California mice. Here we tested whether the use of partial cage dividers could reduce the impact of cage-mate fighting in California mice. Partial cage dividers were made of polycar

Comparison of the Thermal Behavior and Chemical Composition of Milk Powders of Animal and Plant Origin.

The present study aims to perform a comparative analysis of the chemical composition and thermal behavior of two distinct milk types, namely animal and plant-based. The thermal analysis revealed the presence of the following classes of compounds: hydrocarbons, heterocycles, aldehydes, ketones, amines and alcohols. All types of milk contain saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), though the relative proportions of these vary depending on the specific milk type. Animal milk powders contain SFAs, including palmitic, stearic, and m

Combustion behavior and mechanical properties of pellets derived from blends of animal manure and lignocellulosic biomass.

This paper presents the possibility of valorization of animal manure (camel and cow) by mixing it with agro-industrial biomass (cotton stalk and rapeseed oil cake) to produce pellets for use in power generation processes. Feedstocks were mixed in specific proportions based on certain assumptions concerning the energy and mechanical parameters of pellets. The assessment concerned both the combustion behavior as well as mechanical properties of four types of pellets derived from blends of animal manure and agro-industrial biomass. Thermogravimetry (TGA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC

Ketamine reversed short-term memory impairment and depressive-like behavior in animal model of Parkinson's disease.

The most common features of Parkinson's disease (PD) are motor impairments, but many patients also present depression and memory impairment. Ketamine, an N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been shown to be effective in patients with treatment-resistant major depression. Thus, the present study evaluated the action of ketamine on memory impairment and depressive-like behavior in an animal model of PD. Male Wistar rats received a bilateral infusion of 6 μg/side 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Short-term memory was evaluated by the socia

Dizocilpine induced psychosis-like behavior in rats: A possible animal model with full spectrum of schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is categorized as neuropsychiatric disorder with reduced lifespan and significant impairments in social and vocational functioning. One of the best proposed pharmacological animal models is dizocilpine, as it can mimic the full spectrum of schizophrenic disorder including positive and negative symptoms along with cognitive deficits. Dizocilpine is N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist known to induce hyper-locomotion and stereotyped behavior in rodents. Present study was designed to develop an animal model of SZ via intraperitoneal administration of dizocilpine in

Mixing pleasures: review of the effects of drugs on sex behavior in humans and animal models.

Drugs of abuse act on the brain circuits mediating motivation and reward associated with natural behaviors. There is ample evidence that drugs of abuse impact male and female sexual behavior. First, the current review discusses the effect of drugs of abuse on sexual motivation and performance in male and female humans. In particular, we discuss the effects of commonly abused drugs including psychostimulants, opiates, marijuana/THC, and alcohol. In general, drug use affects sexual motivation, arousal, and performance and is commonly associated with increased sexual risk behaviors. Second, studi

Quinpirole induces compulsive checking behavior in rats: a potential animal model of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Rats treated chronically with the dopamine agonist quinpirole (0.5 mg/kg, twice weekly x 10) met 5 criteria for performance of compulsive checking. Specifically, in a large open-field with single small objects in 4 of 25 locales, quinpirole rats revisited two places/objects excessively often and rapidly, compared with other locations in the environment or saline controls. They performed a ritual-like set of behavioral acts at these two places/objects and stopped in relatively few locales before returning to the preferred places/objects. Finally, they shifted their behavior to a new location wh

Appearance-based computer vision pipeline for multi-animal monitoring of canine activity, behavior and clinical observations.

Behavioral monitoring of laboratory animals is essential for evaluating drug safety, yet existing assessments are typically limited to in-room observations by technicians. Here, we introduce our versatile AI model pipeline, composed of interconnected artificial neural networks that leverage end-to-end learning based solely on video-derived appearance features of canines. This non-invasive approach enables detailed mapping of activity, behavior and clinical signs at individual animal level under diverse conditions. To validate its real-world application, we conducted extensive field testing on

Metabolic and skeletal muscle dysfunctions correlate with fatigue behavior in an animal model of multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis associated fatigue (MS fatigue) is one of the most common and troubling symptoms experienced by people with MS, but the cause of MS fatigue remains unknown. The nature of cognitive and physical exhaustion suggests that MS fatigue can be a metabolic disease that impacts energy demanding processes such as neuronal activity and skeletal muscle contraction. In this study, we investigated how autoimmune-mediated inflammation causes skeletal muscle atrophy and metabolic dysfunctions, which may contribute to MS fatigue. Using a relapsing-remitting model of experimental autoimmune e

Depressive-like behavior accompanies neuroinflammation in an animal model of bipolar disorder symptoms induced by ouabain.

INTRODUCTION: A previous study from our Laboratory showed no alteration in inflammatory parameters seven days after ouabain (OUA) administration, a Na+K+ATPase inhibitor, which was previously considered only a mania model. However, the administration of OUA in rats was recently validated as a model of bipolar disorder (BD) symptoms, demonstrating that 14 days after single intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration, OUA also induces depressive-like behavior. Therefore, it is important to investigate the long-term effect of OUA on inflammatory parameters since this mechanism seems to play a ke
