Neuropsychological deficits, including impairments in learning and memory, occur after spinal cord injury (SCI). In experimental SCI models, we and others have reported that such changes reflect sustained microglia activation in the brain that is associated with progressive neurodegeneration. In the present study, we examined the effect of pharmacological depletion of microglia on posttraumatic cognition, depressive-like behavior, and brain pathology after SCI in mice. Methods: Young adult male C57BL/6 mice were subjected to moderate/severe thoracic spinal cord contusion. Microglial depletion

The High Quality Communication intervention aims to stimulate interpersonal communication between individuals with congenital deaf-blindness (CDB) and their social partners. Found effective in multiple-case experiments, the intervention is based on Trevarthen's theory of inter-subjective development (Bråten & Trevarthen, 2007), which describes children's innate and developing ability to share subjective states in interpersonal communication and social partners' mediating role in this development. One implication of this theory is that social partners can support the emergence of higher-complex

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine by randomized controlled trial the effectiveness and safety of the Japanese version of the Community Re-Entry Program, a manualized psycho-educational program with cognitive-behavioral therapy techniques, in discharge preparation for inpatients with schizophrenia. Our hypotheses are that firstly the program is effective for patients in acquiring illness self-management knowledge, that secondly the program shows positive effects on objective behavior and symptoms, and that thirdly the program has no adverse effects on subjective quality of l

Seventy-three women attending a health fair completed a questionnaire that measured demographic and health history variables, knowledge, and current practice of breast self-examination (BSE), Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (MHLC; Wallston, Wallston, & DeVellis, 1978), and components of the Health Belief Model (HBM; Rosenstock, 1974) in relation to breast cancer and BSE. These variables formed the basis of a conceptual model of BSE behavior that was examined by having each woman participate in a behavioral trial with a breast model in which her BSE technique and ability to detect simu

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between therapeutic techniques and session impact, by examining the replicability of findings observed in a university-based training clinic (Boswell et al., 2010) in another practice-oriented setting: private practice. Method: N = 8 therapists completed session-level assessments of their technique use for N = 38 clients. The same client sample completed session-level assessments of session outcome. Technique-outcome associations were examined with multilevel models. Results: As in Boswell et al., common factors were associated with positive

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Nursing observations at night are conducted on psychiatric wards to ensure the safety and well-being of patients as well as to reduce the risk of suicide or severe harm. To our knowledge, no studies have examined the lived experience of the psychiatric ward environment and of nursing observations at night. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: The main complaint from patients was the constant interruption of their sleep, as most of the patients in this study were observed 2-4 times an hour. Their sleep was interrupted by (a) the light from torches shone

Observations were performed on 45 very low birth weight (VLBW) newborns at 7 and 21 days of life, using a Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale specifically modified for the extremely premature infant. Findings were analyzed using multiple and stepwise regression techniques to determine the influence of intrapartum and neonatal factors which might influence neurobehavior . Perinatal asphyxial descriptors accounted for significant variance on day 7 behavior; however, their impact was muted for day 21. At this time, jaundice and postnatal nutrition revealed a prominent and independent behavioral

The study examined behavioral reactions to sound, including startle eye blinks, in young children with Williams syndrome (WS) using video-based observational techniques. Participants were 21 children with WS and 20 children with other developmental disabilities of mixed etiology between the ages of 2.5 and 6. Groups were matched for chronological age and developmental level. All children participated in a semi-structured play interaction including exposure to mild intensity sounds as emitted from conventional toys. Overall, 90% of the children in the WS group were observed to exhibit overt beh

Laparoscopy is one of the most widely used surgical techniques in clinical practice. However, its practice is associated with medium- and long-term musculoskeletal disorders in surgeons. In this context, robot-assisted surgery has emerged as a promising approach for mitigating ergonomic constraints while enhancing control and precision during laparoscope manipulation. Despite these advances, existing research predominantly focuses on robotic control strategies, whereas the study of human-robot interaction in the operating room remains comparatively underexplored. This paper presents a proof-of

Walking is a complex motor behavior with a special relevance in clinical neurology. Many neurological diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and stroke, are characterized by gait disorders whose neurofunctional correlates are poorly investigated. Indeed, the analysis of real walking with the standard neuroimaging techniques poses strong challenges, and only a few studies on motor imagery or walking observation have been performed so far. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is becoming an important research tool to assess functional activity in neurological populations or for special t

Vascular dementia (VD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, and the cognitive dysfunction is a major manifestation of VD. Lots of evidences showed that beta-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and neuroinflammation act as vital elements in the progress of VD. The previous studies showed that osthole (OST) can improve the cognitive function of VD and Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the effect of OST on Aβ in VD brain is still unclear. Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH) of rats were used to investigate the effect of OST on Aβ through nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in this study. Mor

The use of edited videotape replay (which showed only "positive" behaviors) to improve the water skills of three spina bifida children, aged 5 to 10 years was examined. A multiple baseline across subjects design was used, and behavioral changes were observed to occur in close association with intervention. One child was given successive reapplications of videotaped self-modeling with continuing improvements. It appears that a useful practical technique has been developed.

Although effective behavioral techniques have been developed, what aspects of the patient-therapist interaction affect treatment outcome remain largely unknown. This study hypothesized that the interaction between patient and therapist develops over several phases. Further, the association between behavior modes and treatment outcome was expected to alter as that interaction developed. Thirty patients diagnosed with panic disorder with agoraphobia were treated with a standardized behavioral treatment program of 12 sessions. The interpersonal verbal therapist and patient behavior modes were stu

BACKGROUND: Implementation strategies are essential for translating evidence into routine clinical practice. Their effectiveness depends on specifying and deploying behavior change techniques (BCTs): observable, irreducible components that target determinants of clinician behavior. The Behavior Change Technique Ontology (BCTO) standardizes the identification and labeling of BCTs, yet it has been applied only sparingly in implementation research to date.
PURPOSE: To characterize the nature and extent of BCTs explicitly reported or retrospectively identified in implementation trials that target

Increased glucocorticoid concentrations have been shown to favor resilience towards autoimmune phenomena. Here, we addressed whether experimentally induced elevations in circulating glucocorticoids mitigate the abnormalities exhibited by an experimental model of Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcus (PANDAS). This is a pathogenic hypothesis linking repeated exposures to Group-A-beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GAS), autoantibodies targeting selected brain nuclei and neurobehavioral abnormalities. To persistently elevate glucocorticoid concentrations, we sup
