BACKGROUND: With growing global recognition of the need to address mental health, a key challenge is determining who needs mental health services. Most self-report screening tools were developed in English-speaking high-income settings, and this cultural milieu influences the types and content of items, the manner in which items are asked, and the options for responding to items. Approaches have been developed for transcultural translation and validation. However, these approaches are typically applied in one language at a time, which is of limited utility in linguistically diverse settings.

The Tokyo Autistic Behavior Scale (TABS) consisting of 39 items provisionally grouped in four areas--interpersonal-social relationship, language-communication, habit-mannerism and others--is an instrument used by a child's caretaker to rate the child's autistic behaviors on a 3-point scale. Test-retest reliability was satisfactory (i.e., an r for a total score was .94). Among six DSM-III diagnostic groups, infantile autism showed a significantly higher total TABS score than the other five groups, and a taxonomic validity coefficient was .54. An r between total scores of the TABS and the Childh

OBJECTIVE: The Dravet Disease-Associated Neuropsychiatric Disorders (D-DAND) scale is a new caregiver-administered interview designed to assess the wide range of developmental and behavioral comorbidities in Dravet syndrome (DS) beyond seizures. D-DAND's preliminary psychometric properties in a large patient sample are reported.
METHODS: D-DAND was developed by a panel of experts and later standardized with caregivers of 123 individuals with DS (age = 3-41 years); a subsample of 43 caregivers were interviewed twice (~2 weeks apart) to evaluate test-retest reliability; another subsample of 80

Bipolar disorder is typified by episodes of manic/hypomanic and depressive symptoms, either distinctly or concurrently as mixed symptoms. While depressive symptoms are the major driver of risk, it is unclear whether specific combinations of manic and anxiety symptoms contribute differentially to suicidal ideation and behavior in individuals with bipolar disorder during a depressive state. This study uses a quantitative application of Rothman's theoretical framework of causation, or 'causal pies' model. Data were obtained from the National Network of Depression Centers Mood Outcomes Program for

Functional alterations in the subregions of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) have been observed in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). Studies have shown that higher depressive symptoms are associated with altered functional connectivity (FC) in different ACC sub-regions. Suicide is highly prevalent in patients with MDD; however, it is unclear whether suicidal behavior is associated with the FC alterations in the subregions of the ACC in these indibiduals. Seventy-six patients with MDD (41 with and 35 without a history of suicidal behavior) underwent functional magnetic resonance

Purpose Teacher ratings were used to compare children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their typically developing peers on 2 subtypes of social withdrawal (shyness and unsociability). Measurement invariance analysis was utilized to determine if teachers rated the 2 groups using the same underlying construct for each of the rating scale items that have been designed to assess withdrawn behavior. Method The Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (TBRS; C. H. Hart & Robinson, 1996 ) was administered to the teachers of 173 children with DLD and 182 typically developing children (age range: 5

Examined the criterion validity and the utility of Dodge and Coie's (1987) measure of reactive and proactive aggression. Participants were 405 children in kindergarten through 5th grade attending an urban elementary school. Examined criterion validity by testing whether reactive aggression or proactive aggression was significantly correlated with criterion measures of overall impairment as measured by the Impairment Rating Scale (Pelham, Gnagy, et al., 1996), classroom behavior as measured by a frequency count of classroom rule violations, and peer adjustment as measured by teacher ratings of

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Fostering a positive dental attitude in children to enhance their oral health status and engaging them positively throughout their dental experience is the cornerstone of pediatric dentistry practices. The behavior of the child in a dental setting depends upon their emotional, psychological, and mental developmental state. Children with special health needs tend to have more anxiety than healthy children. A low level of social intelligence (SI), fewer adaptive skills, and poor social development take a longer time to accept dental treatment. Thus, social development can im

In the context of a longitudinal study, we assessed the relationship between ratings of autistic behavior, FMR1 protein expression (FMRP), and the developmental trajectories of 55 young males with fragile X syndrome. Autistic behavior, as measured by the Childhood Autism Rating Scale, was not related to FMRP expression. However, autistic behavior was a significant predictor of both developmental status and developmental change. Boys with both autistic behavior and fragile X syndrome functioned at significantly lower levels of development and grew at significantly slower rates than those withou

OBJECTIVES: The self-reported graphic version of the Personal and Social Performance Scale (SRG-PSP) is the first graphic, self-reported rating scale that assesses functioning, and its reliability and validity have been documented in patients with schizophrenia. This study investigated the validity of SRG-PSP in patients with bipolar disorder (BD).
METHODS: Patients with BD were recruited from psychiatric outpatient clinics, and assessed with the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), the Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI)-Bipolar and CGI-D

OBJECTIVE: The short-term efficacy and safety of risperidone in the treatment of disruptive behaviors was examined in a well-characterized cohort of children with subaverage intelligence.
METHOD: In this 6-week, multicenter, double-blind, parallel-group study of 118 children (aged 5-12 years) with severely disruptive behaviors and subaverage intelligence (IQ between 36 and 84, inclusive), the subjects received 0.02-0.06 mg/kg per day of risperidone oral solution or placebo. The a priori primary efficacy measure was the change in score from baseline to endpoint on the conduct problem subscale

In a double-blind trial of six months' duration, a very high dose (VHD) regimen of fluphenazine decanoate (250 mg weekly) was compared with a standard dose (SD) regimen (12.5 mg weekly) in 50 chronic schizophrenic patients. The rating scales used included the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Wing Ward Behavior Scale. Both treatment groups improved during the trial, but there was no significant difference between them. The VHD regimen, however, exerted better control of the psychosis in that it had fewer patient dropouts and fewer "additional treatments" prescribed. Some of the patients r

Background and aims There are significant gaps in knowledge regarding the role of childhood adversity, interpersonal violence, and suicidal behavior in hypersexual disorder (HD). The aim of this study was to investigate interpersonal violence in hypersexual men compared with healthy volunteers and the experience of violence in relation to suicidal behavior. Methods This case-control study includes 67 male patients with HD and 40 healthy male volunteers. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form (CTQ-SF) and the Karolinska Interpersonal Violence Scale (KIVS) were used for assessing early

BACKGROUND: Poor adherence to medication is frequent in Bipolar Disorder (BD). It is associated with illness severity and increases total medical cost. Several factors are associated with poor adherence but previous studies included heterogeneous cohorts of patients with and without current mood episode, with and without SUD.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study, based on the Fondamental Advanced Centers of Expertise in Bipolar Disorders. 382 patients diagnosed with BD (type I, II or NOS) according to DSM-IV, with partial or complete remission and without comorbid SUD, were included.

OBJECTIVE: The investigators examined the frequency of religious coping among older medical inpatients, the characteristics of those who use it, and the relation between this behavior and depression.
METHOD: The subjects were 850 men aged 65 years and over, without psychiatric diagnoses, who were consecutively admitted to the medical or neurological services of a southern Veterans Administration medical center. Religious coping was assessed with a three-item index. Depressive symptoms were assessed by self-rating (the Geriatric Depression Scale) and observer rating (the Hamilton Rating Scale

Postictal behavioral changes (PBCs), including psychosis, aggression, and mood change, are commonly observed in patients with epilepsy. Recognition and description of the clinical manifestations of PBCs would help in understanding and treating patients. Additionally, various quantified objective scales that are widely available in clinical psychiatry could be used to assess the clinical symptoms of PBCs. There are few reports in which objective rating scales have been used to assess neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with epilepsy. However, there have been a small number of studies on inter

BACKGROUND: It has not been established that suicide risk with mixed symptoms is any greater than the depressive component or if there is synergy between depressive and manic symptoms in conveying suicide risk.
METHODS: The National Network of Depression Centers Mood Outcomes Program collected data from measurement-based care for 17,179 visits from 6,105 unique individuals with clinically diagnosed mood disorders (998 bipolar disorder, 5,117 major depression). The Patient Health Questionaire-8 (PHQ-8) captured depressive symptoms and the Altman Self-Rating Mania scale (ASRM) measured hypomani

Youth with Tourette syndrome (TS) often exhibit disruptive behaviors. Although improvement data on rating scales support the efficacy of structured psychotherapeutic interventions, there is growing interest in personalized outcome assessments. This report examined parent-nominated target problems (PTPs) as an individualized outcome measure in 48 youth with TS and disruptive behaviors, who participated in one of two randomized psychotherapy trials. At baseline, parents described two primary problems to an independent evaluator who generated a structured narrative for each problem. These narrati

INTRODUCTION: The link between depression and aggressive behavior in adults has been found in many studies. In adolescents, this relationship is still controversial. Several studies point out that irritability is a key symptom in adolescent depressed. Few studies have analyzed precisely the kind of aggressive behavior. This study sets out to assess the relationship between aggressive behavior and depressive affects in adolescents. We also pay attention in this population to hopelessness feelings, anxiety, global functioning and the type of aggressive behavior.
METHOD: This is a descriptive an

OBJECTIVE: We sought to develop a brief, easy to use behavior checklist to address common limitations in the use of ADHD rating scales in busy clinical settings.
METHOD: Items for the CHAOS ( Conduct- Hyperactive- Attention Problem- Oppositional Symptom) scale were developed based on the ratings of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; DSM-IV) criteria provided by experienced clinicians. The scale was administered to mothers of 205 clinically referred children for the purpose of subscale creation based on principal components analysis (PCA). Reliability and validity
