Are Detailed Behavioral, Psychosocial, and Environmental Variables Necessary to Control for Confounding in Pregnancy Weight Gain Research?

BACKGROUND: Associations between pregnancy weight gain and adverse outcomes may be spurious owing to confounding by factors not typically measured in cohort studies. We determined the extent to which the addition of detailed behavioral, psychosocial, and environmental measurements to commonly available covariates improved control of confounding. METHODS: We used data from a prospective US pregnancy cohort study (2010-2013, n = 8978). We calculated two propensity scores for low and high pregnancy weight gain (vs. adequate gain) using 11 standard confounders (e.g., age and education). We examin

Zebrafish as a potential non-traditional model organism in translational bipolar disorder research: Genetic and behavioral insights.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe and debilitating illness that affects 1-2% of the population worldwide. BD is characterized by recurrent and extreme mood swings, including mania/hypomania and depression. Animal experimental models have been used to elucidate the mechanisms underlying BD and different strategies have been proposed to assess BD-like symptoms. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been considered a suitable vertebrate system for modeling BD-like responses, due to the genetic tractability, molecular/physiological conservation, and well-characterized behavioral responses. In this revie

Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM) position statement: restore CDC funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research.

The Society for Behavioral Medicine (SBM) urges restoration of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funding for firearms and gun violence prevention research. Gun violence in the United States is an important and costly public health issue in need of research attention. Unfortunately, there have been no concerted CDC-funded research efforts in this area since 1996, due to the passage of the Dickey Amendment. To remedy the information-gathering restrictions caused by the Dickey Amendment bans, it is recommended that Congress remove 'policy riders' on federal appropriations bills tha

Worksite behavioral research. Results, sensitive methods, test batteries and the transition from laboratory data to human health.

Ample evidence demonstrates that many chemicals, at some concentration, affect the nervous system. Disastrous incidents resulting from food adulteration, medical experiments and pharmaceutical errors, and industrial and environmental exposures warn of the serious potential for neurotoxicants to affect human health. This article identifies the approximately 185 epidemiological behavioral neurotoxicology studies published through 1989 of extended workplace exposures to chemicals. Approximately 250 different tests have been administered to exposed workers in primarily cross sectional studies, and

Beyond Latency: Chronic Toxoplasma Infection and Its Unveiled Behavioral and Clinical Manifestations-A 30-Year Research Perspective.

Over the past three turbulent decades, research has profoundly reshaped our understanding of chronic Toxoplasma gondii infection-traditionally regarded as harmless in immunocompetent individuals-unveiling its surprising impact on human health, performance, and behavior. This review emphasizes the effects of chronic Toxoplasma infection on physical and mental health, cognitive performance, and behavioral changes, highlighting key findings from studies investigating these domains, with a particular focus on both ultimate and proximate mechanisms underlying the observed effects. To this end, the

Multimethod Formative Research to Improve the Training and Delivery of Tobacco-cessation Interventions in Behavioral Health Settings.

INTRODUCTION: Despite progress in reducing tobacco use within the general population, high prevalence of tobacco use continues in individuals with mental health and substance use disorders ("clients"). Tobacco use persists as the leading cause of premature mortality in this population. While behavioral health providers have frequent contacts with this population, they lack training in tobacco cessation counseling. METHODS: We conducted multimethod formative data collection consisting of key informant interviews with providers, field observations at clinical sites, and structured group intervi

The application of behavioral couples therapy to the assessment and treatment of agoraphobia: implications of empirical research.

The present review was undertaken to examine the literature regarding the role of the marital relationship in treatment of agoraphobia from a behavioral couples therapy (BCT) perspective. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted to evaluate (a) whether marital quality predicts treatment responsiveness and (b) how best to include the spouse in treatment of agoraphobia. Regarding the assessment of agoraphobics' relationship quality, it is recommended that subjectively experienced "satisfaction" with the relationship be distinguished from more descriptive measures of general and

The unilateral 6-hydroxydopamine lesion model in behavioral brain research. Analysis of functional deficits, recovery and treatments.

Lesions with the neurotoxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) have provided an important tool to study dopamine neurons in the brain. The most common version of such lesions is the unilateral one where the toxin is placed in the area of mesencephalic dopamine cell bodies or their ascending fibers. This approach leads to a lateralized destruction of mesencephalic dopamine neurons and to a lateralized loss of striatal dopamine innervation. Such lesions have contributed substantially to neuroscientific knowledge both, at the basic and clinical level. Physiologically, they have been used to clarify the n

Guiding functional near-infrared spectroscopy research on sedentary behavior and brain health.

BACKGROUND: Excessive exposure to sedentary behavior (SB) is associated with cognitive decline and impaired brain health; however, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this relationship remain unclear. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) enables real-time monitoring of cerebral hemodynamics in naturalistic settings and offers unique technical advantages for understanding the effects of SB on brain health. Notably, methodological standardization specific to SB research is lacking, limiting cross-study comparisons and evidence synthesis despite established general fNIRS best pract

Research on the bearing behavior of single pile in self-weight collapsible loess areas.

The negative skin frictional caused by loess collapse will decrease the bearing capacity of single pile, which is essential to the design of pile foundations in loess areas. In this study, a method for estimating the subsidence of soil layer at any depth is firstly proposed based on the total self-weight collapse value. Secondly, a new load transfer constitutive model for pile-soil interface is developed, which considers the nonlinear stress-strain relationship and the ultimate shear strength of soil. Then, a load transfer calculation model for pile foundation is established, which can calcula

Research progress on the interference effects of plasticizers on maternal behavior and its potential mechanisms.

Environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), known as environmental hormones, are exogenous chemicals that can disrupt hormone levels and cause dysfunction of the secretory system in humans and animals. Plasticizers, which are widely used EDCs, are commonly used to enhance the flexibility of plastic products. As plastics age and wear, however, they can leach into the environment and enter the bodies of animals through various pathways such as the digestive tract and skin. They can lead to estrogen-like effects and have substantial reproductive toxicity. Residual plasticizer concentrati

Fundamental Understanding and Research Progress on the Interfacial Behaviors for Potassium-Ion Battery Anode.

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) exhibit a considerable application prospect for energy storage systems due to their low cost, high operating voltage, and superior ionic conductivity. As a vital configuration in PIBs, the two-phase interface, which refers to K-ion diffusion from the electrolyte to the electrode surface (solid-liquid interface) and K-ion migration between different particles (solid-solid interface), deeply determines the diffusion/reaction kinetics and structural stability, thus significantly affecting the rate performance and cyclability. However, researches on two-phase interfa

The Role of Irritability in the Treatment of Behavior Disorders: A Review of Theory, Research, and a Proposed Framework.

Research provides strong evidence that the symptoms of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) are comprised of at least two dimensions: irritability and defiance. Given that these two dimensions have distinct etiologies and long-term risk profiles, they may also warrant different treatment approaches. In particular, impaired emotion regulation plays a central role in the irritable dimension of ODD. As such, this subgroup of youth and their families may benefit from greater consideration of and attention to emotion-focused strategies than is standard in traditional Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)

A brief guide to the menstrual cycle and oral contraceptive use for researchers in behavioral endocrinology.

There is increasing evidence that reproductive hormones exert regulatory effects in the central nervous system that can influence behavioral, cognitive, perceptual, affective, and motivational processes. These effects occur in adults and post-pubertal individuals, and can be demonstrated in humans as well as laboratory animals. Large changes in 17β-estradiol and progesterone occur over the ovarian cycle (i.e., the menstrual cycle) and afford a way for researchers to explore the central nervous system (CNS) effects of these hormones under natural physiological conditions. Increasingly, oral con

Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) - Terminology Consensus Project process and outcome.

BackgroundThe prominence of sedentary behavior research in health science has grown rapidly. With this growth there is increasing urgency for clear, common and accepted terminology and definitions. Such standardization is difficult to achieve, especially across multi-disciplinary researchers, practitioners, and industries. The Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) undertook a Terminology Consensus Project to address this need.MethodFirst, a literature review was completed to identify key terms in sedentary behavior research. These key terms were then reviewed and modified by a Steering Co

[Research advances in molecular mechanisms underlying the different biological behaviors of vestibular schwannoma].

Current treatment options of vestibular schwannomas should not be limited to conventional surgery because of the variability of tumor growth. Recent studies of vestibular schwannomas suggested that the development of the tumor tended to depend on the shuttle between the nucleus and cytoplasm, and the expression patterns of merlin protein. New drug targets for schwannoma therapies might be identified through future in-depth investigations of the function of merlin, thus contributing to tumor control.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors in autism spectrum disorders: a review of research in the last decade.

Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are a core feature of autism spectrum disorders. They constitute a major barrier to learning and social adaptation, but research on their definition, cause, and capacity for change has been relatively neglected. The last decade of research has brought new measurement techniques that have improved the description of RRBs. Research has also identified distinctive subtypes of RRBs in autism spectrum disorders. Research on potential causal origins and immediate triggers for RRBs is still at an early stage. However, promising new ideas and evidence are eme
