Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance - United States, 2017.

PROBLEM: Health-risk behaviors contribute to the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among youth and adults in the United States. In addition, significant health disparities exist among demographic subgroups of youth defined by sex, race/ethnicity, and grade in school and between sexual minority and nonsexual minority youth. Population-based data on the most important health-related behaviors at the national, state, and local levels can be used to help monitor the effectiveness of public health interventions designed to protect and promote the health of youth at the national, state, and

Emergency survey methods in acute cryptosporidiosis outbreak.

In August 2003, a communitywide outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in Kansas. We conducted a case-control study to assess risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection by using the telephone survey infrastructure of the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Using existing state-based infrastructure provides an innovative means for investigating acute outbreaks.

County Prevalence, Awareness, and Control of High Blood Pressure From Health Kiosks in the United States, 2017-2024.

BACKGROUND: As the leading modifiable risk factor for death in the United States, hypertension requires timely and locally detailed surveillance. Current estimates of the high blood pressure (BP) care continuum are lagging national averages from sample surveys with low participation and unknown subnational variation. This study explores the use of self-service health kiosks in retail stores as an alternative source for subnational estimates of prevalence, awareness, and control. METHODS: We analyzed data from adult kiosk users (n=1270 485) across 1892 counties in 49 States (except Massachuset

Comprehensive review of the national surveys that assess E-cigarette use domains among youth and adults in the United States.

Surveillance of e-cigarette use among different population groups is important for the timely implementation and evaluation of tobacco regulatory policies. In this review, we identified 13 nationally representative, repeatedly conducted epidemiologic surveys that assess e-cigarette use among U.S. youth and/or adults and have been instrumental in e-cigarette surveillance. These surveys included National Youth Tobacco Survey, Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, Monitoring the Future Survey, International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (ITC) Youth Tobacco and Vaping Survey, Behavi

The effect of hurricanes on mental health over the long term.

Existing causal studies examining the impact of hurricanes on health and health-related outcomes typically focus on short-run impacts and specific outcomes associated with physical health. In this paper, I explore the long-term effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on the mental health of adults using two individual-level datasets from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Panel Survey of Income Dynamics. Difference-in-differences models are used to estimate the long-run causal impact of hurricanes. I compare the mental health of adults living in Katrina and Rita affected cou

Examining Predictors of Myocardial Infarction.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in the United States. This study analyzed predictors of myocardial infarction (MI) for those aged 35 and older based on demographic, socioeconomic, geographic, behavioral, and risk factors, as well as access to healthcare variables using the Center for Disease (CDC) Control Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) survey for the year 2019. Multiple quasibinomial models were generated on an 80% training set hierarchically and then used to forecast the 20% test set. The final training model proved somewhat capable of prediction wit
