OBJECTIVE: People with alcoholic relatives have high rates of alcohol abuse and dependence as adults, but their patterns of problems earlier in life are less clear. Many studies have not controlled for parental disorders other than alcoholism or for parents' socioeconomic status and general life functioning. The authors' goal was to conduct a study controlling for such factors.
METHOD: Personal structured interviews and a behavioral checklist were administered to the parents of 162 children 7 years old or older whose fathers had participated in the 15-year follow-up of 453 sons of alcoholics

This double-blind trial compared the efficacy of trifluoperazine 1 mg b.i.d. and haloperidol 0.5 mg b.i.d. as initial doses in the treatment of behavioral symptoms associated with chronic brain syndromes and senile psychoses in 54 institutionalized elderly patients. Forty-four of the patients were followed through the entire 6-week trial. Improvement in symptoms as measured by Clinical Global Impressions (CGI) scores was observed in 86% (N = 19) of those who received trifluoperazine and 90% (N = 20) of those given haloperidol. Twenty-seven percent (N = 6) of the trifluoperazine patients were r

This study analyzes whether the association between parental internalizing symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress) and child symptoms of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is mediated by positive and negative parenting behaviors. Cross-sectional data of 420 parents of children (age 6-12 years) with elevated levels of externalizing symptoms were collected in a randomized controlled trial. Measures included parent ratings of their internalizing symptoms and parenting behaviors and of their child's externalizing symptoms. Two mediation models wer

Although the neuropathologic changes and diagnostic criteria for the neurodegenerative disorder Alzheimer's disease (AD) are well-established, the clinical symptoms vary largely. Symptomatically, frontal variant of AD (fv-AD) presents very similarly to behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), which creates major challenges for differential diagnosis. Here, we report two patients who present with progressive cognitive impairment, early and prominent behavioral features, and significant frontotemporal lobe atrophy on magnetic resonance imaging, consistent with an initial diagnosis of

IMPORTANCE: Mental health problems often arise during adolescence and early adulthood, affecting up to 25% to 30% of young people. Enhancing the ability to identify children and adolescents at increased risk of mental health problems and uncover factors that promote mental health from childhood to adolescence is important.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate if cumulative lifestyle behaviors from childhood to adolescence are associated with perceived stress and depressive symptoms in adolescence.

COVID-19 reached pandemic level in March 2020 and the number of confirmed cases continued to increase worldwide. The clinical course of the disease has not yet been fully characterized, and some specific symptoms related to smell, taste, and feeding behavior require further examination. The present study aimed to assess the presence of symptoms related to the feeding behavior occurred during and/or after COVID-19 in adults residing in Portugal and to link them to disease severity using a multivariate approach. Data were collected from May to September 2020, through a questionnaire answered onl

Excessive anxiety and avoidance during provocation of body symptoms are core features of anxiety-related disorders and might contribute to the development and maintenance of these disorders. Previous studies examined psychological (anxiety sensitivity, fear of suffocation and trait anxiety) and biobehavioral (breath-holding time) predictors of reported anxiety during symptom provocation. However, the role of these predictors on avoidance of feared body symptoms remains unclear. Therefore, the present work aimed at investigating the main and interactive effects of psychological and biobehaviora

OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to determine if people with vocal symptoms have different self-regulation aspects compared with vocally healthy people, and to evaluate the relationship between the number of vocal symptoms and self-regulation.
STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional, prospective, multicentric study.
METHODS: Two hundred ninety-eight male and female adults who are nonprofessional voice users volunteered to participate in the study. The participants answered an online survey and two self-assessment instruments: the Voice Symptom Scale (VoiSS) and the Short Self-Regulation Questionn

OBJECTIVE: Adolescents with disruptive behavior disorder, including ADHD, are more likely to engage in risky driving practices and, consequently, are more likely to be involved in a motor vehicle crash (MVC) than their non-ADHD peers. It is unclear whether symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) increase risk of poor driving outcomes.
METHOD: A total of 41 participants (16-19 years old) reported their ADHD and ODD symptoms and risky driving practices (errors and violations). History of citations and MVCs were acquired from state records. Rela

Suzanna was born to a 26-year-old woman who used cocaine, alcohol, and cigarettes and experienced domestic violence throughout her pregnancy. Suzanna was placed in foster care with her current adoptive family after her birth. Her initial evaluation at 4 years revealed a global developmental delay (physical: 6 months; social and communication: 12 months). Improvements in development seemed to be in response to subsequent interventions. At 5 years, she had borderline intellectual functioning, an expressive or receptive language disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Suzanna expe

Renovascular hypertension in children is usually asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally. Behavioral changes have not yet been well recognized as a part of the clinical spectrum of renovascular disease in children. We surveyed all children diagnosed with renovascular hypertension in our institute over a 15-year period. Eleven children were identified, of whom five (45%) had abnormal behavior, which had preceded the diagnosis of hypertension by 3-12 months. The symptoms included restlessness, sleep disturbances, temper tantrums, hyperactivity, aggressive behavior and attention deficit. In three

Although the diagnosis of Parkinson disease is based on motor symptoms, it is now well known that non-motor symptoms are an integral part of this pathology, involving in fact multiple systems. These non-motor symptoms affect large population of patients and can appear sometimes before the motor disorders. The non-motor symptoms include mainly neuropsychological difficulties, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and autonomic disorders, but involve also pain and sleep disturbances for example. Depression may occur at any stage of the disease, and consists in major depressive disorder, minor depressive di

In this article we discuss the traditional behavioral models of depression and some of the challenges analyzing a phenomenon with such complex and varied features. We present the traditional model and suggest that it does not capture the complexity of the phenomenon, nor do syndromal models of depression that dominate the mainstream conceptualization of depression. Instead, we emphasize ideographic analysis and present depression as a maladaptive dysregulation of an ultimately adaptive elicited emotional response. We emphasize environmental factors, specifically aversive control and private ve

The TNM staging system for head and neck cancer is based on the morphologic description of the tumor and disregards the clinical condition of the patient. Cancer symptoms were evaluated as a biologic index of disease to improve survival estimates. The medical records of 1010 patients receiving initial cancer treatment between 1980 and 1991 were retrospectively reviewed. The mean survival duration was 62 months for the entire population. By use of SAS statistical software (SAS Institute, Cary, NC), 48 symptom variables were screened by univariate analysis, and 23 of these variables were selecte

Schizophrenia patients often display multiple repetitive behaviors. We investigated relations among nine repetitive behaviors and evaluated the hypothesis that these behaviors are varied manifestations of a single underlying biobehavioral disturbance. Nine repetitive behaviors from the Elgin Behavioral Rating Scale were assessed in 400 schizophrenia patients residing at a state hospital. A majority of patients were smokers (76.3%) and very few had pica (3%). Several other repetitive behaviors showed substantial frequency. A principal components analysis revealed eight of nine behaviors shared

INTRODUCTION: Exposure to trauma produces abnormal intrinsic brain activity, but its association to stress-related symptom severity is often elusive, and the relationships with co-occurring psychiatric and cognitive changes are poorly understood.
METHODS: This study investigated the neurobehavioral mechanisms of persistent disability in male combat-exposed military personnel and veterans with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (CE-PTSD) (n=19) and trauma-exposed healthy controls with similar combat experiences (n=24). Disturbances in intrinsic activity during resting-state fMRI were i

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a condition where the spinal cord is damaged and experiences partial or complete loss of motor and/or sensory function, which is typically less than normal. After SCI, patients may exhibit more severe psychiatric symptoms and experience cognitive impairments, including reduced speed and attention processing capacity, as well as difficulties with executive function and episodic memory retention. Among the behavioral and psychiatric symptoms, depression, anxiety, substance use disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder are the most common. This review aims to investi

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral symptoms are commonly observed in the course of dementia. This study aimed to assess the association of the diagnosis of a cluster of behavioral symptoms (e.g., agitation, aggression, psychotic symptoms, and delirium/wandering) with the likelihood of subsequent institutionalization.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of adults aged 65 and above diagnosed with dementia identified in the IBM® MarketScan® Multistate Medicaid database between October 01, 2015, and September 30, 2019, was conducted. The index date was defined as the first diagnosis date of dementia. The p
