RATIONALE: Unintentional weight loss and malnutrition are common among cancer patients. Malnutrition has been associated with impaired health-related quality of life, less well-tolerated chemotherapy regimens and shorter life duration. In Belgium there is a lack of epidemiological data on malnutrition in oncology patients at advanced stages of the disease.

Herpes zoster (HZ) is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. The life-time risk of developing HZ is ~ 30%. Management of HZ can be challenging due to limited efficacy of oral antivirals on pain control, and neuropathic pain that may require aggressive management. Post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN) can cause substantial pain and occurs in up to one-quarter of patients with HZ. Up to 48,000 HZ cases are estimated to occur annually in Belgium, estimated to cost almost 7 million euros in treatment. We compare the results with recommendations from the European Position Paper on drug-induced sleep endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a leading cause of mortality in prisoners worldwide, yet empirical data on this matter are lacking in Belgium.
AIMS: This study sought to describe characteristics associated with a consecutive series of suicides in Belgian prisons from 2000 to 2016 inclusive, in order to inform suicide prevention strategies.
METHOD: All documented cases of suicide ( N = 262) were reviewed using a standardized assessment checklist. Official records were abstracted for prisoners' sociodemographic, criminological, and clinical information, as well as for suicide-related characteristics.

Varicella-zoster virus causes chickenpox (CP) and after reactivation herpes zoster (HZ). Vaccines are available against both diseases warranting an assessment of the pre-vaccination burden of disease. We collected data from relevant Belgian databases and performed five surveys of CP and HZ patients. OBJECTIVES: Human Granulocytic Ehrlichiosis (HGE) is a recently discovered zoonosis and, in Europe, not always included in laboratory testing when a patient presents with a history of tick bite. Between January 1985 and December 1990, 233 cases of human listeriosis were reported to the Listeria Reference Centre of Belgium.
