Timeliness of care for eclampsia and pre-eclampsia in Benin, Ecuador, and Jamaica.

OBJECTIVE: Cases meeting diagnostic criteria for severe pre-eclampsia or eclampsia were reviewed in three countries to determine timeliness and effectiveness of care. METHOD: Cases were retrospectively selected from 11 emergency obstetric care facilities and medical records reviewed by trained obstetricians. RESULT: Of 91 cases (Benin, 28; Ecuador, 25; Jamaica, 38), 74% were correctly treated with anticonvulsant and 77% with antihypertensive therapy. The median interval to treat eclampsia (anticonvulsant, 28 min; antihypertensive, 77 min) was shorter than for severe pre-eclampsia (anticonvul

Its detection is most often based upon clinical examination and observation of conjunctive pallor; however, little is known or documented on the performance indicators of this clinical method in Africa. This work aims assess the value of performance indicators in detecting moderate and severe anemia by means of tegument pallor examination in a maternity ward in rural Benin. To this end, 480 pregnant women were recruited at random during their prenatal visits to a rural maternity clinic. T

Maternal and fetal outcome in eclamptic patients in Benin City, Nigeria.

Eclampsia is a well-recognised major cause of maternal death and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The incidence of eclampsia, its presentation patterns, maternal and perinatal outcomes were investigated in a retrospective study conducted at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Nigeria over an 8-year period, 1995 - 2002. There were 103 cases of eclampsia of 7835 deliveries, giving an incidence of one in 76 (1.32%). The mean age of the women was 27.1 +/- 5.6 years. Eclampsia significantly (P < 0.001) occurred in nulliparous and unbooked mothers. Eighty-nine (86.4%) of the patients develo

[Incidence of and factors associated with primary cesarean section in Benin (Africa)].

Among 3225 deliveries in two Cotonou public maternity units, 244 primary cesarean section were observed during July 1988 to December 1989. Primary cesarean section incidence varied according to indications, maternal parity and maternity care units. Foetal distress (65.9%), malpresentation and cephalopelvic disproportion (22.1%) were the dominant organic risk factors for the primary cesarean section. Multivariate stepwise logistic regression technique indicated that the most important indications for the practice in Cotonou were mainly organic risk factors, maternal height and parity as well as

[Human African trypanosomiasis in the north of Benin. A preliminary serologic survey].

Atacora Province has been for a long time a focus of human trypanosomiasis in the People's Republic of Benin. If the prevalence has appreciably decreased in the 1960s on account of the experienced methods of tracking down and a sustained supervision, it is easy to establish and to fear today the waking and even the extension of the historic focus formerly called "Foyer Atacora". Since 1974, new patients in second period of the infection are tracked down each year; they particularly come from the localities of Tanguieta and Materi. This suggests that sleeping sickness still persists in the Nort

Neonatal septicaemia in Benin City, Nigeria. A review of 74 cases.

Seventy four cases of neonatal septicaemia seen at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) over a 3-year period were analysed. The incidence was 6.1 per 1,000 live births. Fifty five percent of the infants were low birth weight. The predisposing perinatal problems were asphyxia, prolonged rupture of membrane and peripartum maternal fever. E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus were the most important aetiologic pathogens; both of which were associated with a high mortality rate. The overall mortality rate was 41.5%. On the basis of the organisms isolated and their sensitivity patterns, it

The problem of uveitis in Bendel State of Nigeria: experience in Benin City.

A review of 1987 patients with uveitis seen over an 11-year period in Bendel State of Nigeria has been undertaken; 56% of cases had a posterior/mid-peripheral uveitis, 15.1% a panuveitis, 21.5% an anterior uveitis. Acute anterior uveitis with classical symptoms was rarely seen. Its comparative rarity is presumably due to the absence of HL-A27 in Africans and altered immunological states from malaria and parasitic infections. Identified aetiological factors in anterior uveitis were leprosy (1 patient), tuberculosis (1 patient), herpes zoster (16 patients), and onchocerciasis (3 patients). The g

Multiple overlapping risk factors for childhood wheeze among children in Benin.

BACKGROUND: The African continent is currently facing an epidemiological transition characterized by a shift from communicable to non-communicable diseases. Prominent amongst the latter are allergies and asthma. In that context, wheeze has multiple potential contributory factors that could include some of the endemic helminth infections, as well as environmental exposures, such as household air pollution. We sought to determine the relative importance of these risk factors among children in Benin. METHODS: We included 964 children aged 6-14 years living in the commune of Comé, south-west Beni
