Pyoderma gangrenosum is a chronic inflammatory ulcerative skin disease of unknown etiology, often associated with various systemic disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic active hepatitis, diabetes mellitus and hematologic malignancies. The ulcers are characterized by their undermined violaceous borders. The disease remains a therapeutic challenge. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of therapy; however, side effects from this treatment and recalcitrant pyoderma gangrenosum require therapeutic alternatives. We report the case of a large subacute pyoderma gangre

The clinical and antibacterial efficacy of two shampoos used as a sole antibacterial treatment in dogs with superficial pyoderma were investigated and compared. In a randomised, partially blinded study, a 3 per cent chlorhexidine gluconate shampoo (Chlorhex 3; Leo Animal Health) was compared against a 2.5 per cent benzoyl peroxide shampoo (Paxcutol; Virbac) in 22 dogs with superficial pyoderma. Dogs were washed two to three times weekly with a 10-minute contact time over 21 days. Clinical scores and bacterial counts were assessed on days 1, 8 and 22 and compared within and between treatment gr

Clindamycin 1%/benzoyl peroxide 5% (BenzaClin) is a combination gel indicated for use twice daily, or as directed by a physician, for the topical treatment of inflammatory and noninflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris. In well designed clinical trials in patients with mild to moderately severe acne, the efficacy of once- or twice-daily clindamycin/benzoyl peroxide in the reduction of inflammatory lesion counts was greater than that of benzoyl peroxide alone, clindamycin alone, or tretinoin plus clindamycin, and not significantly different from that of erythromycin/benzoyl peroxide. In the reduc

A four-week crossover study to compare the efficacy of an acne cleanser containing 2% salicylic acid with that of a 10% benzoyl peroxide wash was conducted in 30 patients with acne vulgaris. The results demonstrated that only patients treated with the salicylic acid cleanser had a significant reduction in comedones. Patients treated with the salicylic acid cleanser for the first two weeks showed a significant improvement in acne, but worsened during benzoyl peroxide therapy over the following two weeks. In contrast, patients initially treated with the benzoyl peroxide wash for the first two we

A combination of benzoyl peroxide (BPO) and tretinoin is recommended for treating acne; however, concurrent administration can be irritating, and coformulation is prevented by BPO-mediated oxidation of tretinoin. In rosacea, benzoyl peroxide has been shown to be efficacious; however, its use has been limited by poor tolerability. To overcome these limitations, the active ingredients can be encapsulated within silica microcapsules. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved 2 products using this technology, a combination of encapsulated benzoyl peroxide and encapsulated tretinoin product

Acne is primarily an inflammatory disease. Anti-inflammatory dose doxycycline (40mg: 30mg immediate release and 10mg delayed release beads) is approved for the treatment of rosacea but with demonstrated efficacy for acne. Fixed combination adapalene 0.3% and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel is a once-daily formulation approved for the topical management of acne vulgaris. It has both anti-inflammatory and anti-comedogenic properties. Options for management of severe acne are somewhat limited; many patients are not candidates for or refuse treatment with isotretinoin. Systemic antibiotics may be indica

This article reviews various studies supporting the use of a fixed-combination monotherapy hydrating gel containing clindamycin 1% and benzoyl peroxide 5% (C/BPO), which is the only available formulation with a hydrating gel vehicle containing a humectant and an occlusive. The C/BPO hydrating gel provides a flexible and complementary efficacy and/or tolerability profile when used alone or with topical retinoids, which results in rapid response in inflammatory and noninflammatory acne. It also mitigates the irritation associated with disease flare or topical retinoid use, and reduces the postin

BACKGROUND: Acne is commonly treated with topical agents such as benzoyl peroxide (BP), which is effective but limited by side effects. Topical dapsone may offer a better-tolerated alternative.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy and safety of topical 5% dapsone versus 2.5% BP in mild-to-moderate acne.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty patients with mild-to-moderate acne were enrolled and randomized. Outcomes included reduction in acne lesion count (inflammatory, noninflammatory, and total), Global Acne Assessment Score (GAAS), patient satisfaction, transepidermal water loss, and side effects.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance is growing globally, with multiple countries reporting resistance in >50% of Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) strains. Combination formulations of an antibiotic and the antimicrobial benzoyl peroxide (BPO) may reduce this resistance risk, especially with prolonged use. This 4-part study tested susceptibility of 31 C. acnes clinical strains and development of resistance to antibiotics alone or combined with BPO.
METHODS: C. acnes susceptibility to single-drug antibiotics was assessed via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values obtained from epsilometer tes

INTRODUCTION: Most surgical site infections after shoulder surgery are caused by Cutibacterium acnes. Topically applied benzoyl peroxide (BPO) has for years been used to decrease the skin load of C acnes in treatment of acne vulgaris. The purpose of this study was to examine this effect on bacterial colonization in patients subjected to elective shoulder surgery at different stages of the procedure.
METHODS: A total of 100 patients scheduled for primary elective open shoulder surgery were randomized to prepare either with BPO or according to local guidelines-with soap (control group). Four sk

Introduction: This randomized, evaluator-blind, single-center, parallel-group study sought to evaluate the tolerability of two reformulated face washes containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) in adults with mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Methods: Healthy adults with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were randomly allocated (1:1:1) to one of two reformulated test products (containing BPO at a concentration of either 4% or 10%) or an older formulation containing 10% BPO (reference product), which they applied twice daily for 21±2 days. The primary tolerability assessment was clinical assessment of signs

Acne is the most common skin disease, with a relative prevalence of 85%-100% among young individuals. It affects the cosmetic appearance of the patients provoking severe distress. A number of different topical treatments have been used for the treatment of acne. In this study, we investigated the efficacy and safety of the topical treatment with 5% benzoyl peroxide and 3% erythromycin gel in patients with papulopustular acne. One hundred and ninety-one patients with inflammatory acne completed the study. The patients included 54 males and 137 females, mean age 22.3 ± 8.1 years. Topical gel was

The ability of a biomimetic superoxide dismutase agent, copper(II)(3,5-diisopropylsalicylate)2 (CuDIPS), to modulate benzoyl peroxide (BzPo)-induced tumor promotion and progression in mouse skin multistage carcinogenesis was evaluated. The results showed a significant inhibition of tumor incidence by CuDIPS pretreatment during promotion-progression. Different types of tumors were developed: papillomas, keratoacanthomas and squamous cell carcinomas. There was a significant increase in the keratoacanthoma-papilloma ratio when the period of treatment with BzPo was prolonged, which was inhibited b

Maintenance therapy after remission of inflammation is strongly recommended in the guideline for the treatment of acne vulgaris published by the Japanese Dermatological Association. One advantage of continuing maintenance therapy is the alleviation of atrophic scarring. This study investigated the efficacy of maintenance therapy using adapalene 0.1%/benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel and benzoyl peroxide 2.5% gel, and its effects on atrophic scarring. Overall, 126 patients were randomized to the adapalene/benzoyl peroxide group (n = 40), benzoyl peroxide group (n = 44), and control group (without maint

Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatological disorder worldwide, causing significant physical and psychological morbidity. Topical combination therapy has shown superior efficacy compared to monotherapy, especially when combined with retinoids. Few studies have directly compared combined formulations. This evaluator-blinded pilot study compared the efficacy and tolerability of two marketed topical combination acne gels, clindamycin 1%-tretinoin 0.025% (CT) and benzoyl peroxide 2.5%-adapalene 0.1% (BA) in 20 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Gels were applied daily on opposite si
