Sexually transmitted infections after bereavement - a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Loss of a loved one has consistently been associated with various health risks. Little is however known about its relation to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study during 1987-2012 using the Swedish Multi-Generation Register, including 3,002,209 women aged 10-44 years. Bereavement was defined as death of a child, parent, sibling or spouse (N = 979,579, 33 %). STIs were defined as hospital visits with an STI as main or secondary diagnosis. Poisson regression and negative binomial regression were used to estimate incidence rate

Utilization of Hospice Bereavement Support by At-Risk Family Members.

Approximately 10% of the bereaved are at risk of bereavement-related mental health disorders. Hospices' bereavement services could potentially address needs of many at risk, but little is known about their service use. We analyzed data from 6160 bereaved family members of hospice patients. Risk of mental health problems was identified by hospice providers postloss. Of those characterized as "at-risk," 52% used services compared to 18% of the "low risk." Factors associated with service use among at-risk were female gender and younger age of death. Those who lost a child used services less than

Lives forever changed: family bereavement experiences after sudden cardiac death.

AIM: To describe the bereavement experiences of families who survived the sudden cardiac death of a family member and identify meanings of loss. BACKGROUND: Approximately 325,000 people experience sudden cardiac death (SCD) annually. It is important to examine family experiences after SCD because of the life altering impact of death on surviving family members. METHODS: A descriptive design, using the qualitative method of narrative analysis, was used to analyze family stories of bereavement. RESULTS: Five themes were identified across seven families: sudden cardiac death … boom; saying goo

Offspring psychopathology following preconception, prenatal and postnatal maternal bereavement stress.

BACKGROUND: Preconception, prenatal and postnatal maternal stress is associated with increased offspring psychopathology, but findings are inconsistent and need replication. We estimated associations between maternal bereavement stress and offspring autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicide attempt and completed suicide. METHOD: Using Swedish registers, we conducted the largest population-based study to date examining associations between stress exposure in 738,144 offspring born 1992-2000 for childhood outcomes a

[Bereavement, burn out and chronic pain--symptomatic treatment with antidepressants].

Antidepressants can also be useful for non-classical indications such as bereavement, burn out and pain, if these conditions lead into a depressive episode or if additional effects like modulation of pain are of therapeutic benefit. Due to the range of side-effects and potential interactions, present medical condition, medication and the clinical appearance of the depressive episode have to be taken into account for the choice of the specific antidepressant. Patients need to be thoroughly informed and accompanied to build and sustain compliance. Patient's sceptical attitude towards antidepress

Risk factors for mortality after bereavement: a logistic regression analysis.

A national sample of elderly widowed people was followed up for six years. Excess mortality was found for men aged 75 years and over in the first six months of bereavement compared with men of the same age in the general population. Logistic regression analysis, controlling for age and sex together, demonstrated that the best independent predictors of mortality among the elderly widowed were: interviewer assessment of low happiness level; interviewer assessed and self-reported problems with nerves and depression; and lack of telephone contacts. The general practitioner is well placed to assess

Risk factors for poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of adult bereaved refugees within the psychosocial-cultural concept of personhood: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The majority of refugees are exposed to trauma and multiple deaths and often face difficulties in coping with the death of someone close to them. This review aimed to systematically synthesize evidence regarding the risk factors associated with poor bereavement outcomes and the support needs of refugees during bereavement, using the ring theory of personhood as a guiding framework to inform service provision and policy development. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using five citation databases (PsycINFO, CINAHL, SocINDEX, MEDLINE, and Web of Science), along with gray lit

The desirability of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) clinician-led bereavement screening and support program for family members of ICU Decedents (ICU Bereave).

PURPOSE: Many bereaved family members (FMs) of intensive care unit decedents experience symptoms of complicated grief (CG) or social distress, but there is no standard screening or follow-up for these individuals. We determined the desirability and need for an intensive care unit-based bereavement screening and support program for these FMs. METHODS: We surveyed bereaved FMs to measure symptoms of CG, prolonged grief disorder, and social difficulties and the desire for support; and staff physicians and nurses at 2 teaching hospitals in Toronto, Canada, to determine comfort and interest in pro

A rapid review of the evidence for online interventions for bereavement support.

BACKGROUND: Grieving is a natural process, and many people adjust with support from family and friends. Around 40% of people would benefit from additional input. Online bereavement support interventions may increase access to support. Evidence regarding their acceptability and effectiveness is emerging but needs to be synthesised. AIM: To synthesise evidence on the feasibility, acceptability, effectiveness, impacts and implementation of online interventions to improve wellbeing, coping and quality of life after bereavement. DESIGN: A rapid review of evidence regarding online bereavement supp

Exploring the role of empathy in prolonged grief reactions to bereavement.

Grief reactions to the bereavement of a close individual could involve empathy for pain, which is fundamental to social interaction. To explore whether grief symptoms interact with social relatedness to a person to whom one directs empathy to modulate the expression of empathy, we administered an empathy task to 28 bereaved adults during functional magnetic resonance imaging, in which participants were subliminally primed with facial stimuli (e.g., faces of their deceased or living relative, or a stranger), each immediately followed by a visual pain stimulus. Individuals' grief severity promot

[The ordeal of perinatal bereavement : what roles for the liaison psychiatrist ?].

Perinatal grief should be given special attention for bereaved parents. In the hospital, multidisciplinary support is provided at different times of care. The loss of a pregnancy or a baby can permanently destabilize the couple's relationship and give rise to psychiatric complications in the presence of risk factors, such as pathological bereavement, a major depressive disorder, an anxiety disorder or a post-traumatic stress disorder. For subsequent pregnancies, there are risks of developing antenatal anxiety, attachment disorder, or parenting disorder. Multidisciplinary support and personaliz

Experiences of continued presence: On the practical consequences of 'hallucinations' in bereavement.

OBJECTIVES: We document the properties of experiences of continued presence (ECPs) helping to resolve controversies about their significance. METHOD: We used qualitative methods in data collection and analysis. This enabled us to document the properties of ECPs. Narrative biographic interviews were carried out with 17 bereaved informants, and conversation analysis was used to identify the sources of meaning and functions of these experiences. RESULTS: Our informants heard voices of the deceased, saw their images, felt their touch, and sometimes felt their presence unspecified in any of the s

Psychopathology among homicidally bereaved individuals: a systematic review.

In the literature on bereavement, claims are made that homicidal loss is associated with posttraumatic stress reactions, depression, and other severe mental health problems. It is surprising that only a few studies have investigated the nature and prevalence of emotional symptoms following homicidal bereavement and a reference to systematic, empirical research is seldom provided. This article reviews the available literature to investigate whether these claims have empirical evidence. Three databases were searched to identify relevant studies. This approach was supplemented with a bibliography

Maternal bereavement in the antenatal period and oral cleft in the offspring.

STUDY QUESTION: Is maternal bereavement (emotional stress) due to loss of a close relative in the antenatal period associated with the risk of oral cleft in the offspring? SUMMARY ANSWER: Our study suggests prenatal maternal bereavement is associated with an increased risk of oral cleft in the offspring, especially when the bereavement was due to a sudden death or death of a child. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The aetiology of oral cleft is unknown but includes both genetic and environmental causes. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE AND DURATION: We performed a population-based cohort study based on several nat

Emotional disclosure for whom? A study of vagal tone in bereavement.

Recent investigations have shown little evidence that written disclosure benefits bereaved individuals over a control condition. The present study hypothesized that the effectiveness of written disclosure for bereavement may be moderated by vagal tone, as indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA). Vagal tone has been identified as an important individual difference in depression. The present study investigated 35 bereaved participants in a longitudinal design, with participants writing each week for 3 weeks, and then participating in follow-up sessions 1 week and 1 month later. As with pre

Brief psychotherapy of bereavement reactions. The relationship of process to outcome.

We studied the relationship of dispositional and process variables with outcome in 52 bereaved patients given time-limited dynamic psychotherapy. Outcomes were generally favorable in symptom relief and improvement in relationship and occupational functioning. Patients' symptoms improved more than did their social and work functioning. Pretreatment levels of impairment or distress were significantly related to outcome, but most demographic and dispositional variables did not predict outcome. Process variables examined in relation to outcome--therapeutic alliance and actions by the therapist--we

Long-term effects of the Family Bereavement Program on spousally bereaved parents: Grief, mental health problems, alcohol problems, and coping efficacy.

This study reports on the findings from a 6-year follow-up of a randomized trial of the Family Bereavement Program (FBP) on the outcomes for spousally bereaved parents. Spousally bereaved parents (N = 131) participated in the trial in which they were randomly assigned to receive the FBP (N = 72) or literature control (N = 59). Parents were assessed at four time points: pretest, posttest, and 11-month and 6-year follow-up. They reported on mental health problems, grief, and parenting at all four time periods. At the 6-year follow-up, parents reported on additional measures of persistent complex

Youth's Coping Dynamics in Responding to Parental Bereavement: A Thematic Synthesis.

This review is intended to synthesize the available qualitative evidence on youths' experiences and perceptions of parental bereavement, developing analytical themes that illuminate both individual grief processes and their embeddedness within relational contexts, thereby advancing theoretical frameworks and informing comprehensive support approaches. Thematic synthesis was adopted for this study and reported following the Enhancing Transparency in Reporting the Synthesis of Qualitative Research (ENTREQ) statement. A systematic search was conducted across four databases from inception to Janua

Reciprocal Temporal Associations Between Grief Rumination and Daily Affect in Bereavement.

Rumination and daily affect play important roles in the development of transdiagnostic mental disorders. However, little is known about the dynamic associations between grief rumination and daily affect in bereaved individuals' everyday lives. This study used ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to examine reciprocal temporal associations between grief rumination and daily negative and positive affect (NA and PA). Sixty-one bereaved individuals completed EMA surveys four times daily for 14 days, yielding 3227 valid observations. Results from residual dynamic structural equation modelling (RDS

Midwives' perceptions of perinatal loss and bereavement care: A metaphor analysis.

This study explores midwives' perceptions of bereavement care for women experiencing perinatal loss through metaphor analysis. Perinatal loss is a traumatic event that also affects midwives emotionally and professionally, yet their experiences remain underexplored. Data were collected via an online semi-structured form from Turkish midwives who had previously cared for bereaved women. Using metaphorical expressions, participants conveyed emotional, cognitive, and professional reflections on bereavement care. Metaphors were identified, coded, and grouped into overarching themes.
