Behavioral and electroencephalographic correlates of 40-Hz EEG biofeedback training in humans.

Two groups of eight adults successfully trained with biofeedback for increases in 40-Hz EEG responses in left or right hemispheres also demonstrated significant 40-Hz EEG increases during baseline periods, and increases in the contralateral hemisphere during training periods. No changes in heart rate, 40-Hz EMG, or 21- or 31-Hz beta, alpha, or theta EEG occurred over training days. Three subjects returning for additional training demonstrated suppression of 40-Hz EEG. A group of four subjects experiencing daily bidirectional training produced substantial within-session control of 40-Hz EEG but

Noninvasive deep brain stimulation using theta-burst transcranial magnetic-acoustic coupling to modulate cortical rhythms in Parkinsonian mice.

Modulating the subthalamic nucleus (STN) through neural circuits can suppress abnormal discharge rhythms in the primary motor cortex (M1) in Parkinson's disease (PD), thereby enhancing motor function. However, a clinically viable noninvasive deep brain stimulation method for PD has yet to be realized. We developed a noninvasive transcranial magnetic-acoustic coupling stimulation (TMAS) system, employing a theta burst stimulation (TBS) mode, to examine its effects of simulated electrical parameters on cortical rhythms in PD. The theta burst-TMAS (TBTMAS) system was established, and its physical

[The antiarrhythmic effect of digitalis in acute myocardial infarction with cardiac failure (author's transl)].

In 59 digitalized and 3 non digitalized patients the effect of digitalis during the 1st to 4th days after transmural myocardial infarction was controlled. Rhythm disturbances in acute myocardial infarction may arise secondary to a complicating cardiac failure and may be influenced by digitalis. In 9 of 17 cases (53 p.c.) with ventricular or supraventricular extrasystoles daily doses of 0,4 mg beta-Methyldigoxin or 0,4 mg Digoxin i.v. resulted in undisturbed sinus rhythm. In two cases supraventricular tachycardia and extrasystoles with rapid ventricular rate were abolished by 1,2 mg beta-Methyl

[Nonparoxysmal tachycardia and accelerated ectopic rhythms].

Ectopic rhythms with impulse frequency of 60-90 per minute are referred to as "accelerated"; those with the frequency of 91-130 impulses per minute are termed "nonparoxysmal tachycardia". Forty patients (27 with nonparoxysmal tachycardia and 13 with accelerated ectopic rhythms) were under observation. Accelerated rhythms were nearly always free of clinical symptoms and did not require an anti-arrhythmia treatment. Nonparoxysmal supraventricular and ventricular tachycardia was usually accompanied by aggravation of the patient's condition. Nonparoxysmal tachycardia turned to paroxysmal one or vi

Frontal theta and beta oscillations during lower-limb movement in Parkinson's disease.

OBJECTIVES: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have deficits in lower-limb functions such as gait, which involves both cognitive and motor dysfunction. In PD, theta and beta brain rhythms are associated with cognitive and motor functions, respectively. We tested the hypothesis that PD patients with lower-limb abnormalities would exhibit abnormal theta and beta rhythms in the mid-frontal cortical region during lower-limb action. METHODS: This study included thirty-nine participants; 13 PD patients with FOG (PDFOG+), 13 without FOG (PDFOG-), and 13 demographically-matched controls. We recor

Spontaneous high-frequency (10-80 Hz) oscillations during up states in the cerebral cortex in vitro.

High-frequency oscillations in cortical networks have been linked to a variety of cognitive and perceptual processes. They have also been recorded in small cortical slices in vitro, indicating that neuronal synchronization at these frequencies is generated in the local cortical circuit. However, in vitro experiments have hitherto necessitated exogenous pharmacological or electrical stimulation to generate robust synchronized activity in the beta/gamma range. Here, we demonstrate that the isolated cortical microcircuitry generates beta and gamma oscillations spontaneously in the absence of exte

Human melatonin in physiologic and diseased states: neural control of the rhythm.

The human melatonin rhythm is endogenous with a surge of secretion entrained to the dark part of the cycle. Reports show consistent blunting or blockade of this nocturnal surge in the presence of sympathetic neurologic lesions and after administration of beta-adrenergic antagonists. However, there is remarkable resistance to elevation of daytime melatonin secretion by adrenergic agonists and by conditions of general sympathetic hyperactivity. Analysis of these and other reports together with results in lower animals allows insight into the control of the human melatonin rhythm. This rhythm is

Impaired heart rate responses and exercise capacity in heart failure patients with paced baseline rhythms.

BACKGROUND: Conduction system disease and beta-blocker therapy are both common among heart failure (HF) patients and contribute to increasing reliance on paced rhythms. We hypothesized that many HF patients dependent on pacing have suboptimal heart rate responses and associated limitations in exercise capacity. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 122 HF patients (left ventricular ejection fractions ≤40%) referred for cardiopulmonary exercise testing, comparing those with pacing at baseline with those with native rhythms. The paced group (PG) had lower resting (71 ± 9 vs 75 ± 15 beats/min; P = .04

Difference analysis of multidimensional electroencephalogram characteristics between young and old patients with generalized anxiety disorder.

Growing evidences indicate that age plays an important role in the development of mental disorders, but few studies focus on the neuro mechanisms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) in different age groups. Therefore, this study attempts to reveal the neurodynamics of Young_GAD (patients with GAD under the age of 50) and Old_GAD (patients with GAD over 50 years old) through statistical analysis of multidimensional electroencephalogram (EEG) features and machine learning models. In this study, 10-min resting-state EEG data were collected from 45 Old_GAD and 33 Young_GAD. And multidimensional

[Antiarrhythmic treatments of permanent atrial fibrillation].

The treatment of chronic atrial fibrillation has 3 different objectives: the control of the ventricular rate, the attempts to restore sinus rhythm, and the prevention of arrhythmia recurrences. Digitalis compounds, beta-adrenergic antagonists and calcium-channel blocking agents can be used to achieve reduction of the ventricular response, in recent-onset arrhythmia with rapid heart rate, and for long-term rate control in patients who cannot be converted to sinus rhythm. In some of them, a combination of 2 of these drugs is needed to slow the ventricular rate, at rest and on exertion. Sinus rhy

Inter-hemispheric functional coupling of eyes-closed resting EEG rhythms in adolescents with Down syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that inter-hemispheric directional functional coupling of eyes-closed resting EEG rhythms is abnormal in adolescents with Down syndrome (DS). METHODS: Eyes-closed resting EEG data were recorded in 38 DS adolescents (18.7 years +/-0.67 SE, IQ=49+/-1.9 SE) and in 17 matched normal control subjects (NYoung=19.1 years +/-0.39 SE). The EEG data were recorded from 8 electrodes (Fp1, Fp2, C3, C4, T3, T4, O1, O2) referenced to vertex. EEG rhythms of interest were delta (2-4 Hz), theta (4-8 Hz), alpha 1 (8-10.5 Hz), alpha 2 (10.5-13 Hz), beta 1 (13-20 Hz), and beta

Separation of circadian and wake duration-dependent modulation of EEG activation during wakefulness.

The separate contribution of circadian rhythmicity and elapsed time awake on electroencephalographic (EEG) activity during wakefulness was assessed. Seven men lived in an environmental scheduling facility for 4 weeks and completed fourteen 42.85-h 'days', each consisting of an extended (28.57-h) wake episode and a 14.28-h sleep opportunity. The circadian rhythm of plasma melatonin desynchronized from the 42.85-h day. This allowed quantification of the separate contribution of circadian phase and elapsed time awake to variation in EEG power spectra (1-32 Hz). EEG activity during standardized be

520 nm and 660 nm light-emitting diodes modulates pancreatic development and beta cell functions in zebrafish embryos.

Green and Red LEDs increase insulin production, but their comparative effects on pancreatic and beta cell development are unclear. Zebrafish embryos were divided into three groups: Control (n = 60), Green (G) (n = 60), and Red (R) (n = 60), then irradiated for three days (14 hours/day) with 0.5 W/cm2 G (λpeak = 520 nm, 180 mA) and R (λpeak = 660 nm, 210 mA). At the end of 72 h, pancreatic and beta cells, circadian rhythm, and oxidative stress gene were analyzed using RT-PCR. Malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione levels were also evaluated. In the Red group, pancr

Investigating the effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on primary somatosensory cortex.

Near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and somatosensory temporal discrimination threshold (STDT) are encoded in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) and largely depend on alpha and beta S1 rhythm. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a non-invasive neurophysiological technique that allows cortical rhythm modulation. We investigated the effects of tACS delivered over S1 at alpha, beta, and gamma frequencies on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception and STDT, as well as phase-dependent tACS effects on near-threshold tactile stimuli perception in healthy subjects. In sep

Is theta/beta Neurofeedback effective for gambling disorder treatment? Insights from a case report.

Several studies showed the effectiveness of theta/beta Neurofeedback (NF) training (i.e., decrease theta power and simultaneously increase beta power) in treating different psychiatric conditions characterized by impaired cognitive control. However, investigations concerning Gambling Disorder (GD) have not yet been conducted. Thus, the main aim of the present study was to investigate the effectiveness of 11 theta/beta NF sessions in the treatment of a patient with GD. A psychological and neuropsychological assessment was performed before and after NF. A general improvement in symptoms severity

[Electric counter shock therapy as a rehabilitation stage for patients with surgically treated acquired heart diseases].

A total of 910 case-reports on electropulse treatment of fibrillation arrhythmia are analyzed in the light of rehabilitating patients operated upon for acquired heart diseases. Experience has shown that re-establishment and retention of the sinus rhythm is of decisive importance in the restitution of physical activity and capacity for work. However, investigations have confirmed that the electropulse therapy helps achieve but good immediate results, whereas the remote ones remain unsatisfactory. The problem of stabilizing the rhythm still awaits its solution. The application of agents blocking

Fetal and neonatal cardiovascular complications from beta-sympathomimetic therapy for tocolysis.

beta-Sympathomimetic drugs cross the placenta freely. Just as these agents cause serious cardiovascular changes in the mother, they may cause severe cardiovascular complications in the fetus. beta-Sympathomimetic agents for tocolysis have been associated with fetal heart rate and rhythm disturbances, hydrops, stillbirth, neonatal cardiac failure, myocardial ischemia and infarction, and neonatal death. Prospective studies have documented changes in interventricular septa of babies exposed to these drugs. Histologic changes have been reproduced in animal models and in vitro similar to those seen

Day/night serotonin levels in the pineal gland of male BALB/c mice with melatonin deficiency.

Studies from another laboratory have shown that several strains of laboratory mice have a genetic defect for melatonin synthesis. In non-deficient species, melatonin synthesis undergoes a typical, beta-adrenergically regulated day/night rhythm with low melatonin levels during daytime and high levels at night, the precursor serotonin showing an inverse behaviour. This study examines whether a day/night rhythm of pineal serotonin levels exists in melatonin-deficient male BALB/c mice. Mice kept under a lighting schedule of 12 h light (lights on at 07.00 h) and 12 h dark were killed at 13.00 and 0

Pharmacotherapeutic decision-making for patients with atrial fibrillation.

PURPOSE: To discuss the therapeutic goals in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF); antithrombotic, rate-control, and rhythm-control medications used in these patients; rationale for choosing between rate-control and rhythm-control strategies; and safety, efficacy, and patient-specific considerations in choosing among established antiarrhythmic medications for these patients. SUMMARY: The three primary goals for patients with AF are prevention of thromboembolic stroke, heart rate control, and rhythm control. Warfarin is more effective than aspirin for stroke prevention in patients with AF, a

Beta-blockers are effective in congestive heart failure patients with atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: It is controversial whether or not beta-blockers are effective in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) who are complicated by persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: We attempted to determine the potential differences in the efficacy between atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm in 70 CHF patients with NYHA class II-IV and radionuclide ejection fraction (LVEF) <40% who received metoprolol or carvedilol over 16 weeks.
