Copper ferrite supported reduced graphene oxide as cathode materials to enhance microbial electrosynthesis of volatile fatty acids from CO2.

Copper ferrite/reduced graphene oxide (CF/rGO) nanocomposites (NCs) was synthesized using the bio-combustion method and applied as a cathode catalyst in the microbial reduction of CO2 to volatile fatty acids (VFAs) in a single chamber microbial electrosynthesis system (MES). The synthesized NCs exhibited a porous network-like structure with a high surface area of CF/rGO (158.22 m2/g), which was 2.24 folds higher than that of CF. The Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) analysis for CF/rGO/Carbon cloth (Cc) revealed a high reduction current density of -7.3 A/

Behavior of bacteriome symbionts during transovarial transmission and development of the Asian citrus psyllid.

The Asian citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae) is a serious pest worldwide, transmitting Candidatus Liberibacter spp. (Alphaproteobacteria), the causative agents of a devastating citrus disease known as huanglongbing or greening disease. In a symbiotic organ called the bacteriome, D. citri possesses an organelle-like defensive symbiont, Candidatus Profftella armatura (Betaproteobacteria), and a nutritional symbiont, Ca. Carsonella ruddii (Gammaproteobacteria). Drastically reduced symbiont genomes and metabolic complementarity among the symbionts and D. citri indicate

Arginine deiminase pathway is far more important than urease for acid resistance and intracellular survival in Laribacter hongkongensis: a possible result of arc gene cassette duplication.

BACKGROUND: Laribacter hongkongensis is a Gram-negative, urease-positive bacillus associated with invasive bacteremic infections in liver cirrhosis patients and fish-borne community-acquired gastroenteritis and traveler's diarrhea. Its mechanisms of adaptation to various environmental niches and host defense evasion are largely unknown. During the process of analyzing the L. hongkongensis genome, a complete urease cassette and two adjacent arc gene cassettes were found. We hypothesize that the urease cassette and/or the arc gene cassettes are important for L. hongkongensis to survive in acidic

Influence of hydraulic regimes on bacterial community structure and composition in an experimental drinking water distribution system.

Microbial biofilms formed on the inner-pipe surfaces of drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) can alter drinking water quality, particularly if they are mechanically detached from the pipe wall to the bulk water, such as due to changes in hydraulic conditions. Results are presented here from applying 454 pyrosequencing of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene to investigate the influence of different hydrological regimes on bacterial community structure and to study the potential mobilisation of material from the pipe walls to the network using a full scale, temperature-controlled experimenta

Dissolved organic phosphorus utilization and composition under different water regimes of a river-dominated estuary.

Dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) has been closely linked to microbial alkaline phosphatases (AP) whose affiliation and diversity is largely unknown in coastal waters. Here we assessed genetic diversity and abundance of bacterial alkaline phosphatases phoD and phosphate transporter phoD and explored how AP activity interacting with them along the salinity gradient of Pearl River Estuary (PRE), which was under heavy anthropogenic pressures. Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) revealed the pathway from environmental variables (pH and salinity) to phoD-harboring bacterial taxa in partic

Composted Cattle Manure Increases Microbial Activity and Soil Fertility More Than Composted Swine Manure in a Submerged Rice Paddy.

Livestock waste composts with minimum inorganic fertilizer as a soil amendment in low-input intensive farming are a feasible agricultural practice to improve soil fertility and productivity and to mitigate soil degradation. The key benefits of the practice rely on the activities of soil microorganisms. However, the role of different livestock composts [composted cattle manure (CCM) vs. composted swine manure (CSM)] on soil microbes, their activities and the overall impact on soil fertility and productivity in a flooded paddy remains elusive. This study compares the effectiveness of CCM and CSM

Exploring the Bidirectional Effects of Gut Microbiota and Short-Chain Fatty Acids on Urticaria Subtypes Through Mendelian Randomization and Mediation Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence links gut microbiota and their by-products, notably short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), to urticaria. This study employs multiple Mendelian Randomization (MR) analyses to unravel the complex interactions among gut microbiota, SCFAs, and different subtypes of urticaria, aiming to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and enhance future clinical research. METHODS: We analyzed published genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics to identify associations between gut microbiota and three common subtypes of urticaria: spontaneous, dermatographic, and temperatur

Depleted dissolved organic carbon and distinct bacterial communities in the water column of a rapid-flushing coral reef ecosystem.

Coral reefs are highly productive ecosystems bathed in unproductive, low-nutrient oceanic waters, where microbially dominated food webs are supported largely by bacterioplankton recycling of dissolved compounds. Despite evidence that benthic reef organisms efficiently scavenge particulate organic matter and inorganic nutrients from advected oceanic waters, our understanding of the role of bacterioplankton and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the interaction between reefs and the surrounding ocean remains limited. In this study, we present the results of a 4-year study conducted in a well-char

Paucibacter toxinivorans gen. nov., sp. nov., a bacterium that degrades cyclic cyanobacterial hepatotoxins microcystins and nodularin.

Thirteen bacterial isolates from lake sediment, capable of degrading cyanobacterial hepatotoxins microcystins and nodularin, were characterized by phenotypic, genetic and genomic approaches. Cells of these isolates were Gram-negative, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, oxidase-positive, weakly catalase-positive and rod-shaped. According to phenotypic characteristics (carbon utilization, fatty acid and enzyme activity profiles), the G+C content of the genomic DNA (66.1-68.0 mol%) and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis (98.9-100% similarity) the strains formed a single microdiverse genosp

A Burkholderia cenocepacia-like environmental isolate strongly inhibits the plant fungal pathogen Zymoseptoria tritici.

UNLABELLED: Fungal phytopathogens cause significant reductions in agricultural yields annually, and overusing chemical fungicides for their control leads to environmental pollution and the emergence of resistant pathogens. Exploring natural isolates with strong antagonistic effects against pathogens can improve our understanding of their ecology and develop new treatments for the future. We isolated and characterized a novel bacterial strain associated with the species Burkholderia cenocepacia, termed APO9, which strongly inhibits Zymoseptoria tritici, a commercially important pathogenic fungu

Molecular Adaptations of Bacterial Mercuric Reductase to the Hypersaline Kebrit Deep in the Red Sea.

The hypersaline Kebrit Deep brine pool in the Red Sea is characterized by high levels of toxic heavy metals. Here, we describe two structurally related mercuric reductases (MerAs) from this site which were expressed in Escherichia coli Sequence similarities suggest that both genes are derived from proteobacteria, most likely the Betaproteobacteria or Gammaproteobacteria We show that one of the enzymes (K35NH) is strongly inhibited by NaCl, while the other (K09H) is activated in a NaCl-dependent manner. We infer from this difference that the two forms might support the detoxification of mercury

Causal association of the skin microbiome with human infertility: insights from a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization.

Infertility is a disorder characterized by the inability to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months of regular and unprotected sexual activity. Affecting 8-12% of the global population, with the continuous progress of microbial research in recent years, a variety of microorganisms may be associated with the onset of infertility. We therefore used a two-sample MR Analysis to investigate the association between skin microbes and infertility. we used preprocessed exposure data to correlate infertility measures (infertility in women, associated with anovulation; Female infertility, cervical i

Sequential Changes in the Mesenteric Lymph Node Microbiome and Immune Response during Cirrhosis Induction in Rats.

Whether the interaction between the gut microbiota and the immune response influences the evolution of cirrhosis is poorly understood. We aimed to investigate modifications of the microbiome and the immune response during the progression of cirrhosis. Rats were treated with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) to induce cirrhosis. We then assessed microbiome load and composition in stool, ileocecal contents (ICCs), mesenteric lymph nodes (MLNs), blood, and ascitic fluids (AFs) at 6, 8, and 10 weeks or ascites production and measured cytokine production in MLNs and blood. The microbiome of MLN, blood, a

Behaviour of carbon-14 containing low molecular weight organic compounds in contaminated groundwater under aerobic conditions.

Short chain carbon-14 (14C) containing organic compounds can be formed by abiotic oxidation of carbides and impurities within nuclear fuel cladding. During fuel reprocessing and subsequent waste storage there is potential for these organic compounds to enter shallow subsurface environments due to accidental discharges. Currently there is little data on the persistence of these compounds in such environments. Four 14C-labelled compounds (acetate; formate; formaldehyde and methanol) were added to aerobic microcosm experiments that contained glacial outwash sediments and groundwater simulant repr

Bridging gut microbiota and polycystic ovary syndrome: the mediating role of metabolites and immune pathways via Mendelian randomization and mediation analysis.

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive metabolic disorder impacting women of reproductive age, with its etiology influenced numerous factors. Recent research indicates that the gut microbiota, along with its metabolites and associated immune-inflammatory responses, may contribute to the pathogenesis of PCOS. However, there is finite understanding of the potential intermediate impacts of circulating metabolites, immune cells, and inflammatory proteins on the linkage between intestinal flora and PCOS. This study seeks to explore the interrelationships among the gut

Assignment of CDC weak oxidizer group 2 (WO-2) to the genus Pandoraea and characterization of three new Pandoraea genomospecies.

CDC weak oxidizer group 2 (WO-2) consists of nine phenotypically similar human clinical isolates received by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 1989 and 1998. Four of the isolates were from blood, three were from sputum, and one each was from bronchial fluid and maxillary sinus. All are aerobic nonfermentative, motile gram-negative rods with one to eight polar flagella per cell. All grew at 25 and 35 degrees C and were positive for catalase, urease (usually delayed 3 to 7 days), citrate, alkalinization of litmus milk, oxidization of glycerol (weakly), and growth on MacConke
