The moderation of maternal parenting on the association of trauma, dissociation, and psychosis in depressive inpatients.

BACKGROUND: The effect of dissociation and parenting style on the relationship between psychological trauma and psychotic symptoms has not previously been investigated. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a moderated mediation model to assess whether the association between psychological trauma and psychotic symptoms is mediated by dissociation and moderated by parental maltreatment. METHODS: Inpatients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar depression (BP) were recruited. Self-reported and clinical rating scales were used to measure the level of dissociation, psychotic

[Nurses involved in adverse events: worrying moral suffering].

In a culture of safety and risk management that seeks to prevent serious adverse events in healthcare environments, we rarely consider what the caregivers involved in these events experience. Studies of nurses show that they experience a range of feelings and sometimes symptoms similar to those found in post-traumatic shock. This text looks back at the experience of nurses as moral suffering, focusing on the offence of a healthcare system and the betrayal of a promise at the heart of the caring relationship.

Neural mechanisms of cooperation and fairness in iterative prisoner's dilemma.

Cooperation is a universal human principle reflecting working with others to achieve common goals. The rational decision-making model contends that cooperation is the best strategy for maximizing benefits in an iterative prisoner's dilemma. However, the motivations for cooperation (or betrayal) are complex and diverse, and often include fairness reflections. In this study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to study underlying neural differences in brain regions related to fairness when people interact with an opponent who tend to cooperate or betray, at different decision-making st

Moralization of E-cigarette Use and Regulation: A Mixed-Method Computational Analysis of Opinion Polarization.

E-cigarette use, or vaping, is undergoing a process of moralization in which issues about vaping evolve from being morally neutral to having discernible moral implications. Using Moral Foundations Theory, this study compared the moral narratives underlying polarized views about e-cigarette use and regulation. We integrated computational and human strategies by conducting the Chow test on the time series data and classification, topic modeling, and Chi-square tests on posts (N = 2,669) from 26 pro-vaping and 19 anti-vaping Facebook Pages. The observation period (August 1, 2019 to March 5, 2020)

Moral injury in psychiatric patients with personality and other clinical disorders: development, psychometric properties, and validity of the Moral Injury Events Scale-Civilian Version.

Background: Moral injury emerges when someone perpetrates, fails to prevent, or witnesses acts that violate their own moral or ethical code. Nash et al. [(2013). Psychometric evaluation of the moral injury events scale. Military Medicine, 178(6), 646-652] developed a short measure, the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES) to facilitate the empirical study of moral injury in the military. Our study aimed to develop a civilian version of the measure (MIES-CV) and examine its psychometric properties in a sample of psychiatric inpatients .Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the sample comprised 24

Beyond procedural justice: Power, identity and the asymmetric architecture of public trust in security services.

Public trust in security services is a critical social-psychological phenomenon, yet existing theoretical accounts remain fragmented and insufficiently attentive to the structural power asymmetries characterising security-public relations. This article argues that the dominant paradigm, procedural justice theory, requires fundamental revision within intergroup and institutional power dynamics. Drawing upon procedural justice theory (Why people obey the law, 1990, Yale University Press; Why people obey the law, 2nd ed., 2006, Princeton University Press), social identity and self-categorisation

Co-Parenting During Separation and After Divorce: Exploring Relational Aggression Towards the Former Romantic Partner and the Child(ren).

Hostile co-parenting can escalate during separation and divorce with significant ramifications on family relationships. The relational and private nature of this behavior can make it hard to document, study, and understand. The purpose of the present study was to determine how relational aggression targeting the co-parent (and former romantic partner), is associated with relational aggression targeting the parent-child bond. The sample consisted of 103 divorced/separated parents (45% fathers) who were co-parenting at least one child with their former partner (Mage years = 43.66, SD = 9.39). Pa

Neural and behavioral dissociations of self-focused and other-focused incentives in trust.

Trust requires balancing potential mutual gain against possible betrayal. This decision depends not only on personal vulnerability to loss (risk) but also on the partner's incentive to betray (temptation) and whether the betrayal is committed intentionally (partner's agency). Previous research-limited by categorical behavioral designs and a neuroimaging focus on pathological mistrust-leaves it unclear how the brain systematically represents personal risk, partner's temptation, and partner's agency during typical trust decisions. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging with a parametric b

Moral Injury as a Mediator of the Associations Between Sexual Harassment and Mental Health Symptoms and Substance Use Among Women Veterans.

Moral injury is an array of symptoms theorized to develop in response to morally injurious events, defined as events that challenge one's core moral beliefs and expectations about the self, others, and world. Recent measures of moral injury have distinguished self-directed moral injury (e.g., moral injury symptoms that emerge following the perpetration of morally injurious events) from other-directed moral injury, the symptoms of which are believed to stem from one's response to actions that others have committed (e.g., within-rank violence, failures of leadership, and acts of betrayal committ

Munchausen syndrome and Munchausen syndrome by proxy in a student nurse.

Most faculty are not prepared for the possibility of encountering Munchausen syndrome (MS) in nursing students and Munchausen syndrome by proxy (MSP) in nursing students' children. When confronted with MS or MSP, their first reaction is often hostility coupled with a sense of betrayal. Given that individuals with this condition are attracted to helping professions, the authors describe both conditions in a case in which a nursing student presented with MS and the student's daughter was a victim of MSP. The focus is on protection of any children and the public, psychiatric treatment for the off

The Ripple Effects of Misattributed Parentage: The Systemic Family Impact of "Not Parent Expected" Discoveries.

Direct-to-consumer (DTC) DNA testing has led to a surge in misattributed parentage discoveries, often referred to as "not parent expected" (NPE) events. While prior research has focused primarily on the experiences of those discovering a parent was not as expected, this qualitative study explores the systemic impact of NPE events on entire families by examining how such discoveries are experienced by multiple family members. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 43 members of 11 families in the United States and Canada, we identified four interrelated processes characterizing family responses to

Lonely at Work: The Moderating Role of Leader-Member Exchange in the Association Between Workplace Loneliness and Perceived Task and Contextual Performance.

The current study examined the moderating role of leader-member exchange (LMX) in the associations between workplace loneliness and employees' perceived task and perceived contextual performance. Specifically, the study explored whether the negative associations between workplace loneliness and these two dimensions of performance were weaker at higher levels of LMX. Data were collected through a questionnaire-based survey of 352 white-collar employees from various sectors in Türkiye, and the hypotheses were tested using moderation analysis. Workplace loneliness was negatively associated with b

Shame and alienation related to child maltreatment: Links to symptoms across generations.

OBJECTIVE: The current study investigated associations between appraisals of shame and alienation related to mothers' own experiences of child maltreatment and symptoms across generations-in mothers themselves as well as their toddler/preschool-aged children. METHOD: Mothers who survived maltreatment (N = 113) with a child between the ages of 2 and 5 were recruited to participate in an online study on Maternal Coping, Attachment and Health. Mother participants completed a series of questionnaires, including those that asked about posttrauma appraisals of their own maltreatment experiences as

Moral Injury and Mental Health Consequences in Active-duty Soldiers: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Cross-sectional Surveys.

INTRODUCTION: Moral injury (MI), defined as perceived betrayals or violations of one's moral values, causes psychological distress in active-duty soldiers (ADS), and it is associated with various mental health (MH) issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. Although some quantitative reviews have examined the association between MI and MH outcomes in the military population, primarily among veterans, none of the studies focused specifically on ADS. This systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to address the research gap. METHODS: We reviewed publ

Moral injury and pre-deployment personality factors as contributors to psychiatric symptomatology among combatants: a two-year prospective study.

Background: Combatants who are exposed to events that transgress deeply held moral beliefs might face lasting psychopathological outcomes, referred to as Moral Injury (MI). However, knowledge about pre-deployment factors that might moderate the negative consequences of MI is sparse. In this prospective study, we examined pre-enlistment characteristics and pre-deployment personality factors as possible moderators in the link between exposure to potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) and psychiatric symptomatology among Israeli active-duty combatants. Methods: A sample of 335 active-duty Is

Psychometric evaluation of the Continuous Traumatic Stress Response Scale under intensified national threat.

The Continuous Traumatic Stress Response Scale (CTSR) was developed to assess traumatic stress responses under ongoing threat. This study evaluated whether the original 11-item, three-factor CTSR structure retained psychometric support after the October 7, 2023, attacks and subsequent war in Israel. The cross-sectional confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) sample used each participant's first available assessment, yielding 756 unique participants; longitudinal analyses included 337 participants who completed both waves. CFA supported the prespecified three-factor structure of exhaustion/detachmen

The study of cognitive characteristics in Asperger's disorder by using a modified Prisoner's Dilemma game with a variable payoff matrix.

Individuals with Asperger's Disorder (ASP) have difficulties in social reciprocity and in providing appropriate cooperative behavior. The Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) is a well-known model in game theory that illustrates the paradoxical disposition of interaction between two individuals with opposing interests, and may be a useful tool in the diagnosis of ASP in early childhood. In this study, we investigated the cognitive characteristics of ASP by using a modified PD game. The subjects were 29 individuals with ASP and 28 age- and IQ-matched controls. In the PD game, each of two players has two car
