The effect of alcohol hangover on the ability to ride a bicycle.

To investigate the effects of alcohol on the ability to ride a bicycle, practical cycling tests were carried out at different blood alcohol concentrations (BAC). For this purpose, various alcoholic beverages could be consumed from around 2 p.m. until 11 p.m. Afterwards, the test persons spent the night on the trial site and were provided with dormitory sleeping accommodation. On the following morning, beginning at around 8 a.m., a final cycling test was performed. The performances of those test persons who had returned to state of soberness and of those with residual blood alcohol levels were

Bicycle and motorcycle wheel spoke injury in children.

PURPOSE: To review bicycle and motorcycle wheel spoke injuries around the foot and ankle in 24 children. METHODS: Medical records of 12 boys and 12 girls aged 2 to 11 (mean, 5.3) years who presented with an isolated posterior heel injury caused by wheel spokes of a motorcycle (n=9) or bicycle (n=15) were reviewed. RESULTS: All 9 motorcycle injury patients and 8 of 15 bicycle injury patients had lacerations. The remaining 7 bicycle injury patients had abrasions and developed skin necrosis and ulcerations, with 5 requiring debridement. The most common site of laceration was the posterolateral

Persistent groin pain after a bicycle fall.

Motor scooter handlebar syndrome (MSH) is uncommon. MSH includes groin pain associated with intimal injury to the common femoral artery caused by a direct blow from objects such as a motor scooter handlebar. We describe a case of a 23-year-old man with MSH occurring after a bicycle fall. The diagnosis was performed 5 years after the onset of pain. The patient underwent endovascular surgery and made a rapid recovery. Postoperatively, he was free of symptoms. This case highlights the difficulty of recognising this syndrome.

Impaired quality of life after bicycle trauma.

INTRODUCTION: Bicycle crashes often affect individuals in working age, and can impair quality of life (QoL) as a consequence. The aim of this study was to investigate QoL in bicycle trauma patients and to identify those at risk of impaired QoL. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 173 bicycle trauma patients who attended a level I trauma centre from 2010 to 2012 received Hadorn's QoL questionnaire six months after their crash. Medical data was collected from the patient's records. Univariate ordinal logistic regression was used to investigate the association between QoL and other factors. RESULTS: 148 pati

"This bicycle gives me a headache", a congenital anomaly.

BACKGROUND: [corrected] The combination of a presacral mass, a sacral bone deformity, and an anorectal malformation are also known as the Currarino triad or Currarino syndrome. The syndrome is associated with a very high rate of severe and intractable constipation and urinary incontinence. However, it can also result in less common complaints and symptoms. Although the syndrome is known since 1981 and the involved genes are clarified to a great extent, the diagnosis may be delayed or missed if unrecognized. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year old female presented with periodical headaches. She was b

Fatal falls from bicycles: a case report.

Though rare occurrences, fatal falls from bicycles are generally linked to the absence of a protective helmet and/or a collision with another vehicle. The case presented here is exceptional due to its circumstances and the consequences of the accident: a fall with no obstacle at a low speed that brought about multiple traumas and the death of a cyclist wearing a protective helmet. Comparing this against a review of cyclist accidentology literature, this case is unique. The increased use of autopsy in terms of forensic accidentology is to be encouraged so as not to misunderstand the possibility

Orbital trauma caused by bicycle hand brakes.

PURPOSE: This report aims to increase awareness of an unusual mechanism of orbital injury sustained by bicycle riders. METHODS: In this retrospective small case series, we describe two cases of orbital injury caused by upper eyelid penetration. A 5-year-old boy (patient 1) and a 6-year-old boy (patient 2) presented to our service within a 2-week period. Both had been injured by similarly styled, handlebar-mounted bicycle hand brake levers. Patient 1 had an orbital roof fracture and penetrating brain injury and underwent repair of a left upper eyelid laceration, craniotomy for pseudoencephaloc

Bicycle injury prevention and safety in senior riders.

Senior bicycle riders have special safety and injury prevention needs. They are at greater risk for injury and mortality. Very few educational materials have been developed to assist this group in improving their riding abilities and preventing injury to themselves. This article reviews the risks encountered by older bicyclists, discusses injury revention, and describes the development of an educational video developed especially for senior riders consistent with the goals of the National Bicycle Safety Conference.

Synthesis of bicyclic pyrimidine derivatives as ATP analogues.

A highly efficient and general solid-phase synthesis of bicyclic pyrimidine derivatives that target purine dependent proteins is reported. The synthesis of the key intermediate, 4,6-disubstituted-5-amino-pyrimidine, involved reduction of the corresponding nitro derivatives using 1,1'-dioctyl-viologen in a triphasic milieu. The mild reduction conditions enable the use of any acid labile solid support as well as a wide range of combinatorial substituents, thus enabling the synthesis of large libraries of highly diverse bicyclic pyrimidines. Alternative reduction conditions with tin(II) chloride

Bicycle injuries: road trauma is not the only concern.

Data on bicycle injury presentations at a public hospital emergency department for 1991-95 inclusive were analysed to determine the nature and extent of bicycle injuries in the community. There were 599 bicycle injury presentations during the study period, representing more than 2.0% of all injury-related presentations to the emergency department. The main outcome measures were severity and type of injury. Distribution by gender, age, helmet use (1991 and 1992 only), location and mechanism was examined. Rider-only injuries (falls or collisions with stationary objects) accounted for 79.3% of al

Bicycle helmet use by adults: the impact of companionship.

Most of the nearly 1,000 fatal bicycle-related injuries annually could be prevented if riders used safety helmets. Helmet use by adult bicyclists has received relatively little attention because educational campaigns to promote helmet use generally focus on children. Helmet use by adult and child bicyclists at 120 suburban and rural sites in three Maryland counties was observed on two Saturdays in 1990-91 during an evaluation of the impact of a mandatory helmet law. Concordance or discordance of helmet use within various groups of bicyclists--adults only, adults with children, and children onl

[Fatal bicycle accidents--causes and legal responsibility].

Ninety-nine bicycle and motorcycle accidents were analyzed that had taken place from 1980 to 1984 in and around Frankfurt on the Main. The postmortem examinations were done in the Center of Forensic Medicine at the University of Frankfurt. Twenty-five percent of the bicycle riders were children up to the age of 15 years and 25% were elderly people over the age of 60. Most of the people involved in motorcycle accidents were between 17 and 24 years of age. The greatest amount of accidents took place in the summer, but in October there was also a peak. On weekdays, Thursday was the day when most

Bicycle accidents and injuries among adult cyclists.

Bicycling accidents comprised the greatest recreational source of Emergency Room visits last year, numbering over 500,000. To evaluate cycling morbidity, 492 active adult bicyclists from a metropolitan area responded to a survey to determine cycle use and accident patterns. Nearly half (46%) have been involved in an accident with the cyclists being at fault 58.7% of the time. Soft tissue injuries to the extremities predominated with 9.3% of all injuries requiring hospitalization (average, 7 days) and 22.5% missing days from work or school. Significant factors contributing to bicycle accidents

BMX bicycles: accident comparison with other models.

A comparison has been made between BMX bicycle accidents and those occurring when children ride other types of bicycle. The injuries sustained are compared to see if the clinical impressions that BMX are more dangerous, and produce more facial injuries, are correct. This was found not to be true as half the children involved rode BMX bicycles, and the injuries sustained were similar to those occurring to non BMX riders. BMX riders had a lower proportion of serious injuries than riders of racing cycles. There were a large number of head injuries needing admission to hospital, but BMX riders had

Comparing the effects of infrastructure on bicycling injury at intersections and non-intersections using a case-crossover design.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the impact of transportation infrastructure at intersection and non-intersection locations on bicycling injury risk. METHODS: In Vancouver and Toronto, we studied adult cyclists who were injured and treated at a hospital emergency department. A case-crossover design compared the infrastructure of injury and control sites within each injured bicyclist's route. Intersection injury sites (N=210) were compared to randomly selected intersection control sites (N=272). Non-intersection injury sites (N=478) were compared to randomly selected non-intersection control si
