Energy intake patterns in obese women with binge eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: For binge eating disorder (BED) to be accepted as a distinct diagnostic category in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, it must be demonstrated that the criteria identify a diagnostic entity that is distinct from bulimia nervosa and obesity. This study examined the difference in total energy intake per day, patterns of energy intake throughout the day, and nutrient content of foods consumed in obese individuals who met the criteria for BED (on binge and non-binge days) and those who did not. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Twenty women, 12 wh

Perception of parental acceptance in women with binge eating disorder.

The authors contribute to the validating literature for binge eating disorder (BED) by examining perceptions of parents and satisfaction with life among obese women with and without BED. Participants were female patients, recruited through a private medical clinic, who were assigned to groups on the basis of body mass index (BMI) and scores on the Questionnaire on Eating and Weight Patterns (QEWP; R. L. Spitzer et al., 1992). Groups consisted of (a) obese women with BED (n = 32), (b) obese women who had no eating disorders (n = 51), and (c) nonobese women with no eating disorders (n = 30). All

Binge eating disorder: treatment outcome over a 6-year course.

Little is known about the long-term course of binge eating disorder (BED). The aim of the study was to assess the 3- and 6-year course and outcome of 68 consecutively treated females with BED. Their mean age was 29.3 years and they were assessed longitudinally at four timepoints: (1) beginning of therapy; (2) end of therapy; (3) 3-year follow-up; and (4) 6-year follow-up. Self rating as well as expert ratings were used for assessment. Symptoms of specific eating disorder as well as general psychopathology were measured. The general pattern of results over time was as follows: substantial impro

Binge eating disorder: its further validation in a multisite study.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is a new eating disorder that describes the eating disturbance of a large number of individuals who suffer from recurrent binge eating but who do not regularly engage in the compensatory behaviors to avoid weight gain seen in bulimia nervosa. This multisite study of BED involved 1,785 subjects drawn from 18 weight control programs, 942 subjects from five nonpatient community samples, and 75 patients with bulimia nervosa. Approximately 29% of subjects in weight control programs met the criteria for BED. In the nonpatient community samples BED was more common than pur

Functional seizures and binge eating disorder: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVE: Functional seizures (FS) are brief, involuntary changes in behaviour or consciousness, distinct from epileptic seizures, potentially associated with psychological dissociation. Binge eating disorder (BED) was linked to psychological and somatic dissociation also. However, any connection between FS and BED is insufficiently explored. We aimed to assess BED prevalence in individuals with FS, anxiety/depression (AD), and healthy subjects (HS), to investigate dissociation's link to binge eating, and to explore psychological characteristics of FS individuals. METHOD: Participants underw

Neural correlates of body image processing in binge eating disorder.

Although body image disturbances play a central role in the development, maintenance and relapse of binge eating disorder (BED), studies investigating the neural basis underlying body processing in BED are still missing. To address this gap, we conducted a preregistered (German Clinical Trials Register [Deutsches Register Klinischer Studien; DRKS], Registration DRKS00008107) combined functional magnetic resonance (fMRI)/eye tracking study in which 38 women with BED and 22 healthy controls weight-matched for overall equivalence processed images of their own bodies, an unfamiliar weight-matched

Psychopathological Networks in Cognitive-Behavioral Treatments for Binge-Eating Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Network approaches to psychopathology posit that mental disorders emerge from interrelated symptoms, and thus connectivity among symptoms are assumed to negatively predict the treatment response and decrease with efficacious treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study uniquely sought to elucidate the network structure, its change, and its predictive value in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for binge-eating disorder (BED). METHODS: In a multicenter randomized trial of face-to-face and Internet-based guided self-help CBT, 178 individuals with full syndrome and subsyndromal BED, eating di

Binge eating disorder revisited: what's new, what's different, what's next.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common type of eating disorder. According to the most recent data available, the estimated lifetime prevalence of BED among US adults in the general population is 0.85% (men 0.42% and women 1.25%). Among psychiatric treatment populations, prevalence is several-fold higher. Although many people with BED are obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2), roughly half are not. In the DSM-5, BED is defined by recurrent episodes of binge eating (eating in a discrete period of time, an amount of food larger than most people would eat in a similar amount of time under similar circums

Current pharmacotherapy options for bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Growing evidence indicates binge eating, defined as the consumption of an abnormally large amount of food accompanied by a sense of loss of control, is an important public health problem. Although psychotherapy may be effective, not all patients respond adequately. AREAS COVERED: This article provides an overview of bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED), the two conditions characterized by recurrent binge eating as a core feature, and reviews studies of specific medications in treating patients with BN or BED, focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Review of controlled psychotherapy treatment trials for binge eating disorder.

This paper reviews investigations of psychotherapy outcome studies for binge eating disorder, which has recently been intensively studied as several researchers have undertaken the task of delineating which treatment options are the most effective. Several randomized, controlled clinical trials have provided important findings. A current debate concerns what the initial course of treatment should be, reducing binge eating patterns or reducing weight. Several limitations to this literature are mentioned, including the dearth of studies investigating treatment for men and boys with binge eating

Review and meta-analysis of pharmacotherapy for binge-eating disorder.

This study evaluated available controlled treatment studies to determine utility of pharmacotherapy for binge-eating disorder (BED). The authors identified randomized placebo-controlled trials testing pharmacotherapy-only treatments and controlled trials testing pharmacotherapy with psychotherapy treatments. Meta-analysis was performed on placebo-controlled trials with data for attrition, remission, and weight loss. Qualitative review was performed on remaining controlled treatment literature. A total of 33 studies were considered of which 14 studies with a total of 1,279 patients were include

Psychopharmacotherapy of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorder.

Pharmacotherapy for anorexia nervosa is considered to be of limited efficacy. However, many studies suffer methodological limitations, and the utility of newer drugs in the treatment of anorexia has not been examined yet. Although there have been more fruitful investigations on the efficacy of medication in the management of bulimia nervosa, there are still many unresolved issues regarding the optimal management of partial remission during the acute treatment phase and the intensity and duration of pharmacotherapy to achieve optimal prophylaxis.
