Inducing laccase activity in white rot fungi using copper ions and improving the efficiency of azo dye treatment with electricity generation using microbial fuel cells.

This work presents a white rot fungus-microbial fuel cell (WRF-MFC) that uses WRF that is grown at its cathode. Adding Cu2+ to the fungi-containing solid medium stimulated WRF-secreting laccase, which catalyzed the redox reaction in the MFC and thereby promoting the generation of electricity. Adding 12.5 mg L-1 Cu2+ to a G. lucidum-containing medium provided the greatest laccase stimulation and increased the laccase activity by a factor of 1.6. Adding 12.5 mg L-1 Cu2+ to the WRF chamber of WRF-MFC increased its decolorization of Acid Orange 7 (AO-7) and increased its power density to 223 mW m-

Comparison of flexible fuel vehicle and life-cycle fuel consumption and emissions of selected pollutants and greenhouse gases for ethanol 85 versus gasoline.

The objective of this research is to evaluate differences in fuel consumption and tailpipe emissions of flexible fuel vehicles (FFVs) operated on ethanol 85 (E85) versus gasoline. Theoretical ratios of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for both fuels are estimated based on the same amount of energy released. Second-by-second fuel consumption and emissions from one FFV Ford Focus fueled with E85 and gasoline were measured under real-world traffic conditions in Lisbon, Portugal, using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS). Cycle average dynamometer fuel consumption and

Description of a Naphthoquinonic Crystal Produced by the Fungus Scytalidium cuboideum.

Intarsia was an art form popular between the 15th⁻18th centuries that used wood pigmented by spalting fungi to create detailed landscapes, portraits, and other imagery. These fungi are still used today in art but are also finding relevance in material science as elements of solar cells, textile dyes, and paint colorants. Here we show that the spalting fungus Scytalidium cuboideum (Sacc. and Ellis) Sigler and Kang produces a red/pink pigment that forms two distinct colors of crystals (red and orange)-a very rare occurrence. In addition, a second structure of the crystal is proved through nuclea

Electrophoretic deposition-assisted layer-by-layer construction of carbon nanotube-MnO2-based hybrid biofilm for supercapacitive microbial fuel cells.

The exploitation of hybrid biofilm with alternating functional layer represents a promising way to upgrade the performance of supercapacitive microbial fuel cells (SC-MFCs). However, the popularization of this special hybrid biofilm requires a convenient and scalable construction strategy. Herein, the electrophoretic deposition-assisted layer-by-layer construction strategy has been developed to successively deposit carbon nanotube-manganese dioxide nanocomposite (C-M) and bacterial cells for the formation of hybrid biofilm. When using in SC-MFCs, the hybrid biofilm with two repetitive C-M/bact

Single-Atomic Ni-N4 Biofuel Cell for Mimicking Intramolecular Electron-Harnessing of Laccase.

Ni-N4-PAN-NC, consisting of an atomic Ni-N4 site, mimics the intramolecular electron-harnessing of natural laccase (LAC) confined in a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (LAC@ZIF-8) for anodic electrooxidation of bisphenol-A (BPA). We have introduced a facile π-conjugated unit of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-resorcinol-derived N-doped conjugated -C≡N. The atomically dispersed Ni-single-atom in Ni-N4 - PAN-NC exhibits high activity for the paired electrolysis of ORR and the electrooxidation of BPA with an enhanced current density. The single Ni-N4-PAN-NC electrode effectively withdraws the electrons f

Enhancing CO2-reduction methanogenesis in microbial electrosynthesis: Role of oxygen-containing groups on carbon-based cathodes.

Microbial electrosynthesis is a promising technology that recovers energy from wastewater while converting CO2 into CH4. Constructing a biocathode with both strong H2-mediated and direct electron transfer capacities is crucial for efficient startup and long-term stable CH4 production. This study found that introducing carboxyl groups onto the cathode effectively enhanced both electron transfer pathways, improving the reduction rate and coulombic efficiency of CH4 production and increasing the CH4 yield by 2-3 times. Carboxyl groups decreased the overpotential for H2 evolution and increased cur

Shewanella chilikensis MG22 isolated from tannery site for malachite green decolorization in microbial fuel cell: a proposed solution for recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).

Malachite Green (MG) dye of the triphenylmethane group is a toxic compound used in the aquaculture industry as an antifungal agent, however, it can accumulate in fish and pose toxicity. The present work aims to remove MG in Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) as a sustainable and eco-friendly solution. Out of six samples, the highest malachite green degradation was obtained by a sample obtained from Robiki tannery site in agar plates in 24 h at 37 °C. Robiki sample was used to inoculate the anodic chamber in Microbial Fuel cell, the resulting average electricity production was 195.76 mV for two weeks. T

Three-Stage Single-Chambered Microbial Fuel Cell Biosensor Inoculated with Exiguobacterium aestuarii YC211 for Continuous Chromium (VI) Measurement.

Chromium (VI) [Cr(VI)] compounds display high toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic potential. Biological analysis techniques (e.g., such as enzyme-based or cell-based sensors) have been developed to measure Cr(VI); however, these biological elements are sensitive to the environment, limited to measuring trace Cr(VI), and require deployment offsite. In this study, a three-stage single-chambered microbial fuel cell (SCMFC) biosensor inoculated with Exiguobacterium aestuarii YC211 was developed for in situ, real-time, and continuous Cr(VI) measurement. A negative linear relationship was observed be

Microbial electrosynthesis of acetic acid from carbon dioxide using a bimetallic-granular activated carbon cathode.

Development of highly stable, conductive, biocompatible and cost-effective cathode is crucial for scaling up microbial electrosynthesis (MES). Bimetallic cathodes have gain importance in recent times due wide application. Current study utilized a bimetallic (nickel and iron) impregnated granular activated carbon (Ni-Fe-GAC) cathode in microbial electrosynthesis. Ni-Fe-GAC cathode was prepared via treating GACs in a mixed solution of nickel chloride and iron sulphate. Deposition of metals on GAC facilitates the improved electron transfer and biofilm formation on the GAC surface, giving 1.4 time

Defined Electrosynthetic Microbial Consortia Reveal Electron Transfer Modes Governing Acetate Production.

Precise manipulation of interspecies electron transfer (IET) is critical for advancing microbial electrosynthesis (MES) toward efficient CO2 bioconversion. Here, defined synthetic consortia are constructed by pairing Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model bidirectional electroactive bacterium, with Clostridium aceticum (electroactive acetogen) or Acetobacterium woodii (nonelectroactive acetogen), mimicking functional guilds commonly observed in natural MES communities. Co-cultivation markedly boosts acetate production by up to 88%, achieving 1.16 ± 0.01 and 1.05 ± 0.01 g L-1, with carbon conversi

Bifunctional electrode materials: Enhancing microbial fuel cell efficiency with 3D hierarchical porous Fe3O4/Fe-N-C structures.

The rational development of high-performance anode and cathode electrodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is crucial for enhancing MFC performance. However, complex synthesis methods and single-performance electrode materials hinder their large-scale implementation. Here, three-dimensional hierarchical porous (3DHP) Fe3O4/Fe-N-C composites were prepared via the hard template method. Notably, Fe3O4/Fe-N-C-0.04-600 demonstrated uniformly dispersed Fe3O4 nanoparticles and abundant Fe-Nx and pyridinic nitrogen, showing excellent catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a half

A quantitative evaluation method for wastewater toxicity based on a microbial fuel cell.

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) was successfully developed as a toxicity biomonitoring system to enable a quick response to wastewater with unknown toxicity in toxic events. The objective was to quantitatively assess the toxicity of wastewater by a rapid method. Different concentrations of formaldehyde were introduced into the anode chamber, which led to different stages of voltage change. A relationship between the linear slope of the voltage drop stage and the formaldehyde concentration was established through dose-response fitting results. This relationship makes it possible to convert an unkno

Performance of low temperature Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) catalyzed by mixed bacterial consortia.

Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) are a promising technology for treating wastewater in a sustainable manner. In potential applications, low temperatures substantially reduce MFC performance. To better understand the effect of temperature and particularly how bioanodes respond to changes in temperature, we investigated the current generation of mixed-culture and pure-culture MFCs at two low temperatures, 10°C and 5°C. The results implied that the mixed-culture MFC sustainably performed better than the pure-culture (Shewanella) MFC at 10°C, but the electrogenic activity of anodic bacteria was substan

Enhanced Performance of a Microbial Fuel Cell with a Capacitive Bioanode and Removal of Cr (VI) Using the Intermittent Operation.

This study investigated a system which simultaneously produced electricity and stored energy in the MFC integrated MnO2-modified capacitive bioanode. Compared to the noncapacitive anode, the maximum power density of MFC with MnO2-modified bioanode reached 16.47 W m-3, which was 3.5 times higher than that of the bare anode (4.71 W m-3). During the charging-discharging experiment, the MFC with a capacitance bioanode has a higher average peak current density of 5.06 mA cm-2 and 36 times larger than that with the bare bioanode. With the capacitive electrode, it is possible to let the MFC at the sa

Direct nitrogen fixation at the edges of graphene nanoplatelets as efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Nitrogen fixation is essential for the synthesis of many important chemicals (e.g., fertilizers, explosives) and basic building blocks for all forms of life (e.g., nucleotides for DNA and RNA, amino acids for proteins). However, direct nitrogen fixation is challenging as nitrogen (N₂) does not easily react with other chemicals. By dry ball-milling graphite with N₂, we have discovered a simple, but versatile, scalable and eco-friendly, approach to direct fixation of N₂ at the edges of graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs). The mechanochemical cracking of graphitic C--C bonds generated active carbon spe

Refractory reentrant atrial tachycardia. Successful treatment with a permanent radio frequency triggered atrial pacemaker.

This 68 year old man had recurrent episodes of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia, probably due to chronic pericarditis, persisting over a 7 year period. These episodes were resistant to all conventional medical therapy and at times produced ischemic chest pain. There was no evidence of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome either on the standard electrocardiogram or on the His bundle electrogram performed with atrial pacing. Rapid atrial pacing at a rate of 200/min was found to promptly terminate the tachycardia and restore normal sinus rhythm. Because of the refractoriness of the patient's tachycardia,

A Living Semiartificial Photoelectrocatalytic Biohybrid for Solar CO2 Fixation and Fermentation to Fatty Acids.

To address the global climate and energy crisis, innovative strategies are urgently needed to transform CO2 into sustainable fuels and chemicals. We present a semiartificial biophotoelectrochemical (BPEC) platform, combining solar energy conversion with naturally evolved microbes to develop solutions for transforming CO2 and water into multicarbon products─without sacrificial additives or precious materials. This remains extremely challenging for fully artificial photocatalytic systems. Our system features a scalable and low-cost CuBi2O4 photocathode, stabilized by a thin MgO interlayer, in di
