Visual feedback of vocal intensity in the treatment of hysterical aphonia.

This case report describes the successful though temporary removal of a hysterical aphonic symptom in a 49-year-old male patient by using visual feedback of changes in vocal intensity. Following symptom removal the patient experienced considerable emotional distress due to a number of factors. His aphonia returned and has proven resistant to subsequent intervention. At a 1-year follow-up his condition was found to be unchanged. The case is discussed in relation to the common controversy over the wisdom of symptomatic treatment for hysterical reactions, and a practical means of resolving the di

Treatment of sinus tachycardia with heart-rate feedback.

A 23-year-old male with a history of sinus tachycardia was treated with heart-rate feedback in eight sessions. From a pretreatment average of 103 beats per minute (BPM) as recorded in two separate baseline sessions, the heart rate dropped to 66 BPM in the last treatment session. At follow-up the heart rate seemed stabilized within the normal range, averaging 68 BPM after 1 month and 73 BPM after 12 months. Simultaneous EMG recordings of m. frontalis suggest a generalized effect of this treatment. Results are discussed in terms of somatic and respiratory mediation.

Panendoscopic feedback in the study of voluntary velopharyngeal movements.

A videopanendoscope system was used to record velopharyngeal movements and to display those movements to subjects who produced them. Three normal adults were studied as they attempted to produce nonspeech velopharyngeal closure by use of two maneuvers: (1) laryngeal fixation and (2) modification of an elicited gag reflex. A rating system was devised to extract data from the videotapes. The findings indicated that subjects were able to utilize the videopanendoscopic feedback to guide voluntary velopharyngeal movements. The velopharyngeal movements were accompanied by larynx displacement and oth

Respiratory biofeedback and psycho-education for patients with post COVID- 19 symptoms and bodily distress: study protocol of the randomized, controlled explorative intervention trial POSITIV.

BACKGROUND: A high number of individuals report suffering from physical and psychological sequelae symptoms after COVID-19-the so-called post COVID-19 condition. Commonly reported complaints include physical symptoms such as fatigue, headache, attention and concentration deficits or dyspnea and anxiety, symptoms of post-traumatic stress, or depression. Evidence-based treatment recommendations are still lacking up to this point. Associations between physical and psychological symptoms in chronic diseases are known for a long time. Support in coping with the disease and improvement of self-effic

Respiratory biofeedback-assisted therapy in panic disorder.

The authors describe a new methodologically improved behavioral treatment for panic patients using respiratory biofeedback from a handheld capnometry device. The treatment rationale is based on the assumption that sustained hypocapnia resulting from hyperventilation is a key mechanism in the production and maintenance of panic. The brief 4-week biofeedback therapy is aimed at voluntarily increasing self-monitored end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PCO2) and reducing respiratory rate and instability through breathing exercises in patients' environment. Preliminary results from 4 pati

Follow-up to: "Tension headaches: what form of therapy is most effective?'.

In an earlier study the authors reported on the relative effectiveness of three psychological methods of treating tension headache. This paper reports follow-up data on each procedure and focuses on variables seemingly related to long-term success. Follow-up occurred at 3, 6, and 12 months and involved 1 week of self-report records of headache activity and medication dosage. For the 30 original subjects, follow-up information was available for 23, 20, and 18 subjects, respectively, at each of the three follow-up periods. Questionnaire and physiological data indicated that the type of treatment

A controlled study of the effects of EEG biofeedback on cognition and behavior of children with attention deficit disorder and learning disabilities.

Eighteen children with ADD/ADHD, some of whom were also LD, ranging in ages from 5 through 15 were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. The experimental condition consisted of 40 45-minute sessions of training in enhancing beta activity and suppressing theta activity, spaced over 6 months. The control condition, waiting list group, received no EEG biofeedback. No other psychological treatment or medication was administered to any subjects. All subjects were measured at pretreatment and at posttreatment on an IQ test and parent behavior rating scales for inattention, hyperactivity, and a

Surface Electrical Impedance Myography in Assessment of Morphofunctional Changes in Biological Tissues and Biofeedback Interfaces.

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a noninvasive bioimpedance technique used to assess the structural and compositional properties of muscle tissue. It involves passing a low-intensity probing current between current electrodes and recording the resulting potential difference across measuring electrodes positioned over the muscle of interest. The complexity of signal interpretation lies in the mechanisms of its generation, which are based on dynamic morphofunctional changes in muscle tissue and the skin-fat layer during contraction, which remain incompletely understood. The aim of this re

Defecation Symptoms in Relation to Stool Consistency Significantly Reflect the Dyssynergic Pattern in High-resolution Anorectal Manometry in Constipated Patients.

GOALS: To evaluate the usefulness of a 2-week patient-completed bowel habit and symptom diary as a screening tool for disordered rectoanal coordination (DRC). BACKGROUND: DRC is an important subgroup of chronic constipation that benefits from biofeedback treatment. Diagnosis of DRC requires a dyssynergic pattern (DP) of attempted defecation in high-resolution anorectal manometry (HRAM) and at least 1 other positive standardized examination, such as the balloon expulsion test or defecography. However, HRAM is generally limited to tertiary gastroenterology centres and finding tools for selectin

Enhancing running injury prevention strategies with real-time biofeedback: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The number of runners and the incidence of running-related injuries (RRIs) are on the rise. Real-time biofeedback gait retraining offers a promising approach to RRIs prevention. However, due to the diversity in study designs and reported outcomes, there remains uncertainty regarding the efficacy of different forms of feedback on running gait biomechanics. Three databases: MEDLINE, PUBMED, and SPORTDiscus were searched to identify relevant studies published up to March 2024, yielding 4646 articles for review. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Downs and Black Quality che

Biofeedback Training to Increase P co2 in Asthma With Elevated Anxiety: A One-Stop Treatment of Both Conditions?

OBJECTIVE: Anxiety is highly prevalent in individuals with asthma. Asthma symptoms and medication can exacerbate anxiety, and vice versa. Unfortunately, treatments of comorbid anxiety and asthma are largely lacking. A problematic feature common to both conditions is hyperventilation. It adversely affects lung function and symptoms in asthma and anxiety. We examined whether a treatment to reduce hyperventilation, shown to improve asthma symptoms, also improves anxiety in asthma patients with high anxiety. METHOD: One hundred twenty English- or Spanish-speaking adult patients with asthma were r

Dysfunctional Voiding in Pediatrics: A Review of Pathophysiology and Current Treatment Modalities.

In Dysfunctional Voiding (DV), the external urethral sphincter or pelvic diaphragm (consisting of striated muscle) contracts during voiding, contrary to normal physiological mechanism. In Flowmetry plus pelvic Electromyography (EMG), the perineal surface electrodes will show a persistent activity during voiding. The cause is believed to be the persistence of an immature bladder control. The overall prevalence of DV is estimated between 7 and 11% of girls of school age. Symptoms of DV comprise a range of symptoms, deriving from outlet obstruction, incomplete voiding and elevated Post Micturitio
