Biofilm growth dynamics in a micro-irrigation with reclaimed wastewater in the field scale.

The dripper clogging due to the development of biofilm can reduce the benefits of micro-irrigation technology implementation using reclaimed wastewater. The narrow cross-section and labyrinth geometry of the dripper channel enhance the fouling mechanisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the water distribution and biofouling of drip irrigation systems at the field scale during irrigation with treated wastewater. Six 100 m lines of commercial pipes with two pressure-compensating dripper types (flow rate, Q, of 0.65 L h-1 and 1.5 L h-1, respectively) were monitored for four months. Differen

Noise emissions from ultrasonic antifouling and their potential effects on marine mammals.

Biofouling on ship hulls increases drag, fuel consumption, and therefore greenhouse gas emissions. It also contributes to the spread of invasive species and can clog seawater cooling systems. Ultrasonic antifouling is an emerging technology that employs high-frequency vibrations to inhibit organism attachment, which can potentially reduce biofouling. Commercial shipping is already a major source of mostly low-frequency underwater radiated noise. The use of ultrasonic antifouling equipment raises concern whether the additional high-frequency noise emissions significantly increase the acoustic s

Mussel-Inspired Copolyether Brushes: Synergistic Catechol-Amine Interactions for Enhanced Adhesion and Antifouling Performance.

Biofouling poses major challenges in marine and biomedical sectors. To overcome the substrate-specific limitations of conventional poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coatings, we report herein a versatile, mussel-inspired anchoring strategy. Using catechol-amine functionalized copolyethers, we created substrate-independent antifouling PEG brushes. To elucidate the synergistic role of catechol and amine groups, three control copolymers (catechol-only, phenol-amine, and phenyl-amine) were synthesized via anionic ring-opening polymerization using a PEG macroinitiator. Comprehensive characterization reve

Enhancing Digital Microfluidics: A Comprehensive Investigation into the Performance of Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces.

Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS), formed by infusing porous Teflon with liquid lubricants, hold immense potential for applications in the field of digital microfluidics by enabling efficient droplet manipulation, preventing biofouling, and improving device performance. Despite diverse membrane-oil combinations reported to prepare SLIPS, systematic optimization for digital microfluidic application remains limited. This study investigates the fabrication and performance of SLIPS on two different Teflon membranes infused with three different oils (Silicone oil, Krytox oil, and Fluo

UV emitting glass: A promising strategy for biofilm inhibition on transparent surfaces.

Marine biofouling causes serious environmental problems and has adverse impacts on the maritime industry. Biofouling on windows and optical equipment reduces surface transparency, limiting their application for on-site monitoring or continuous measurement. This work illustrates that UV emitting glasses (UEGs) can prevent the establishment and growth of biofilm on the illuminated surfaces. Specifically, this paper describes how UEGs are enabled by innovatively modifying the surfaces of the glass with light scattering particles. Modification of glass surface with silica nanoparticles at a concen

Environment influence on antifouling coating efficiency: evidence from the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

This study evaluated micro- and macrofouling on panels coated with Hempaguard X7 (X7), Hempasil X3 + 87500, Dynamic 9000, and Globic 9500 M versus uncoated controls over 12 months at two contrasting sites: Muscat (Sea of Oman, MS) and Abu Dhabi (Arabian Gulf, AD). We hypothesized that environmental conditions and coating type influence antifouling performance, shaping microbial community structure and subsequent macrofouling. Panels were sampled at 2, 7, and 12 months to represent early, mid, and late colonization stages. All coatings reduced micro- and macrofouling compared to controls, but e

Durable Antibacterial Photothermal Membrane Using Melanin-Inspired Cu-Doped Polynorepinephrine for Water Remediation.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is an efficient approach to addressing water scarcity due to its environmental sustainability. However, the prolonged use of solar evaporators causes microbial contamination from wastewater. Inspired by the antifouling properties of polydopamine, we develop a series of mono- and dual-metal-loaded poly(norepinephrine) (PNE) nanoparticles by pre-doping multiple metal ions. Metal doping enhances the photothermal conversion efficiency (∼60%) of PNE by reducing the energy bandgap and imparts antimicrobial properties. Cu2+-loaded PNE (Cu-5) combined with laser ac

Surface Engineering for Endothelium-Mimicking Functions to Combat Infection and Thrombosis in Extracorporeal Life Support Technologies.

Blood-contacting medical devices routinely fail from the cascading effects of biofouling toward infection and thrombosis. Nitric oxide (NO) is an integral part of endothelial homeostasis, maintaining platelet quiescence and facilitating oxidative/nitrosative stress against pathogens. Recently, it is shown that the surface evolution of NO can mediate cell-surface interactions. However, this technique alone cannot prevent the biofouling inherent in device failure with dynamic blood-contacting applications. This work proposes an endothelium-mimicking surface design pairing controlled NO release w

Ground truthing marine litter stranding hotspots for the Eastern Pacific Ocean coasts: A collaborative approach with school communities.

Oceanographic models predict relatively high rates of floating litter arrivals on shores influenced by onshore currents compared to regions with extensive offshore transport, such as Eastern Boundary Upwelling Systems. However, the lack of large-scale observations along continental coasts has prevented tests of this prediction. Volunteer participants (here, schoolchildren) sampled marine litter on continental beaches along 12,000 km of the East Pacific coast from 30°N to 45°S to assess the presence of biofouling organisms on objects with positive buoyancy. The presence of sessile biota indicat

Nanomaterial-Modified Antibacterial Membranes for Water Treatment: From Dimensional Classification and Modification Strategies to Antimicrobial Mechanisms.

Membrane separation technology is extensively used in water treatment. However, during long-term operation, biofouling caused by bacteria and other microorganisms significantly limits the service life of membranes. Introducing antibacterial nanomaterials onto the membrane surface or into the internal structure is an effective way to combat biofouling. This review systematically summarizes recent progress in antibacterial membranes modified with different nanomaterials. First, we classify antibacterial nanomaterials by dimensionality and highlight their physicochemical properties and effects on

Protecting bacteriophages under UV irradiation with brilliant blue FCF for targeted bacterial control.

Compared to the standard methods for treating bacterial diseases, bacteriophages are eco-friendly and chemical-free. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light or sunlight hampers the efficacy of phage-based approaches. This is crucial when phages are i) exposed to sunlight (e.g., in agriculture) or ii) are to be used simultaneously with UV for sterilization. Here, we develop a method utilizing a food dye, brilliant blue FCF (BB), that selectively stabilizes bacteriophages against exposure to UV irradiation. In the absence of BB, all tested phages and bacteria are completely inactivated by UV exposure

Antifouling processes and toxicity effects of antifouling paints on marine environment. A review.

The production infrastructure in aquaculture invariably is a complex assortment of submerged components with cages, nets, floats and ropes. Cages are generally made from polyamide or high density polyethylene (PEHD). All of these structures serve as surfaces for biofouling. However, cage nets and supporting infrastructure offer fouling organisms thousands of square meters of multifilament netting. That's why, before immersing them in seawater, they should be coated with an antifouling agent. It helps to prevent net occlusion and to increase its lifespan. Biofouling in marine aquaculture is a s

Bioinspired Long-Lived SLIPS for Synergistic Drag Reduction, Corrosion Protection, and Marine Antifouling.

Biofouling, corrosion, and hydrodynamic drag degrade the marine infrastructure efficiency. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS) offer a promising antifouling strategy, yet are limited by lubricant depletion and lack of active chemical protection. Inspired by the jellyfish Cyanea nozakii (which combines a slippery surface and venom secretion), a nanocellulose-based SLIPS is developed with robust lubricant retention and pH-responsive controlled biocide release. Cellulose nanocrystal porous coatings embedded with chitosan-encapsulated Econea nanocapsules are infused with epoxy-anchored

From copper to curcumin: the role of fillers in the development of sustainable marine antifouling polymer composites.

Marine biofouling remains a persistent global challenge, causing severe deterioration of offshore infrastructures and marine vessels, which results in significant economic losses and ecological concerns. Conventional antifouling strategies relying on toxic biocides (copper, organotins) face stringent regulatory prohibition due to ecosystem devastation, creating an urgent demand for sustainable alternatives. Here, we critically evaluate emerging bio-based antifouling technologies, demonstrating that nanocomposite-polymer systems and natural bioactive integration offer viable pathways toward tox

Cabomba caroliniana and Schoenoplectus californicus as Antifouling Candidates: Anti-Attachment and Toxicological Effects in Aurelia coerulea (Cnidaria, Scyphozoa).

Biofouling on artificial surfaces in aquatic ecosystems leads to significant economic losses. Current antifouling paints, while effective, often harm the aquatic environment. This study explores ecologically safe antifouling alternatives derived from plants, focusing on the aquatic macrophytes Cabomba caroliniana (CC) and Schoenoplectus californicus (SC). While these macrophytes have shown promise against microfouling, their effectiveness against marine macrofouling remains underexplored. For marine macrofouling tests, Aurelia polyps have been recommended due to their availability and handling

It Is Useless to Resist: Biofilms in Metalworking Fluid Systems.

Biofouling, the undesirable deposition of microorganisms on surfaces, is ubiquitous in aqueous systems. This is no different for systems running with water-miscible metalworking fluids (MWFs), which additionally contain many organic chemicals that create favorable conditions for growth and metabolism. Biofilm formation is thus inevitable, as there is no shortage of wetted surfaces in metalworking systems. MWF manufacturers tried in vain to offer resistance by using biocides and biostatic compounds as ingredients in concentrates and as tank-side additives. We report here that such elements, alo

Development of Antifouling Strategies for Marine Applications.

Marine biofouling is an undeniable challenge for aquatic systems since it is responsible for several environmental and ecological problems and economic losses. Several strategies have been developed to mitigate fouling-related issues in marine environments, including developing marine coatings using nanotechnology and biomimetic models, and incorporating natural compounds, peptides, bacteriophages, or specific enzymes on surfaces. The advantages and limitations of these strategies are discussed in this review, and the development of novel surfaces and coatings is highlighted. The performance o

Atomic Chromium Coordinated Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Bioinspired Antibiofouling in Seawater.

Artificial nanozymes exerting enzyme functionality are recognized as promising alternatives of natural enzymes in biomimetic chemistry. Natural haloperoxidases that utilize hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) to catalytically convert halide into strong biocidal hypohalous acid hold great promise for thwarting biofouling, while their practical application remains highly questionable as instability of natural enzymes and inadequate H2 O2 . Herein a semiconducting nanozyme consisting of chromium single atoms coordinated on carbon nitride (Cr-SA-CN) that performs bifunctional roles of nonsacrificial H2 O2

Ship Hull-Fouling Diatoms on Korean Research Vessels Revealed by Morphological and Molecular Methods, and Their Environmental Implications.

Ship biofouling is one of the main vectors for the introduction and global spread of non-indigenous organisms. Diatoms were the early colonizers of ship hulls; however, their community composition on ships is poorly understood. Herein, we investigated the diatom community on the hull samples collected from two Korean research vessels Isabu (IRV) and Onnuri (ORV) on September 2 and November 10, 2021, respectively. IRV showed low cell density (345 cells/cm2) compared to ORV (778 cells/cm2). We morphologically identified more than 15 species of diatoms from the two research vessels (RVs). The mic
