Silicon-based microring resonator (SMRR), as a typical application of label-free detection in optical biosensors, performs advantages such as small size, high sensitivity, and ease of integration, making it suitable for detecting physical, chemical, and biological signals. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder with high concealment, while early intervention can effectively slow its progression. For early diagnosis of AD, optical detection platforms based on SMRR can effectively overcome the challenges posed by low-abundance biomarkers and interfering factors in blood

Eggs of the Yucatan octopus, Octopus maya, were collected at Campeche, Mexico, transported to Hawaii, and incubated in glass funnels. Benthic juveniles hatched from the large (17-mm) eggs and were reared on a variety of live and frozen foods. As many as 200 animals were reared for the first month in a 20-liter aquarium. No disease or parasite problems were encountered and nearly all well-fed juveniles survived to sexual maturity. The species was reared through four generations in the laboratory. Animals weighed 0.1 g at hatching and within 8.5 months attained an average weight of 3231 g. Matin

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used for code generation and data analysis. This study assesses LLM performance across four predictive tasks from three DREAM challenges: gestational age regression from transcriptomics and DNA methylation and classification of preterm birth and early preterm birth from microbiome data. We prompt LLMs with task descriptions, data locations, and target outcomes and then run LLM-generated code to fit prediction models and determine accuracy on test sets. Among the eight LLMs tested, o3-mini-high, 4o, DeepseekR1, and Gemini 2.0 can complete at least o

Ethics committees are not yet fully integrated into the response to climate change, whether they are national ethics committees (NECs) that issue advisory opinions or research ethics committees (RECs) that review research protocols. This article took this observation as its starting point to consider how ethics committees could support to more accurately assess the consequences of climate change on health, through a lens that focuses on the health of younger and future generations yet within the wider context of ecosystems. From November 2024 to November 2025, the R(H)OPE- The Right To An Open

The fundamental understanding of many biological processes that unfold in a human body has become possible due to experimental studies on animal models. The backbone of modern biomedical research is the use of mouse models for studying important pathophysiological mechanisms, assessing new therapeutic approaches and making decisions on acceptance or rejection of new candidate medicines in preclinical trials. The use of mice is advantageous because they have small size, are easy to keep and to genetically modify. Mice make up more than 90 % of the rodents used for pharmaceutical research. We pr

The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), algorithm optimization and high-throughput experiments has enabled scientists to accelerate the discovery of new chemicals and materials with unprecedented efficiency, resilience and precision. Over the recent years, the so-called autonomous experimentation (AE) systems are featured as key AI innovation to enhance and accelerate research and development (R&D). Also known as self-driving laboratories or materials acceleration platforms, AE systems are digital platforms capable of running a large number of experiments autonomously. Those systems a

The concept of the Land of Not-Unhappiness refers to the potential achievement of eliminating the pathologies of the aging process. To inform of how close we are to settling in the land, we summarize and review the achievements of research on anti-aging interventions over the last hundred years with a specific focus on strategies that slow down metabolism, compensate for aging-related losses, and target a broad range of age-related diseases. We critically evaluate the existing interventions labeled as "anti-aging," such as calorie restriction, exercise, stem cell administration, and senolytics

Mental health disorders are prevalent among biomedical students, and scientific research is one of their main activities, yet less is known about the relationship between research activities and mental health among these students. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the associations between research activities and mental health and to identify the potential risk factors for anxiety and depression among biomedical students in China. This study enrolled 1,079 participants between November 2020 and December 2020 from 29 Chinese provinces and collected participants' basic character

Community engagement in biomedical trials is to ensure ethical conduct in research, yet it has been criticised regarding power and exploitation of vulnerable communities where trials take place. This makes community engagement processes complex. We report on one example of how the global politics of biomedical research and local issues of contemporary politics and identities intertwine in a community engagement process. These issues emerged during observations in staff training at a biomedical HIV prevention trial centre in South Africa from September to November 2015. Within the practices of

BACKGROUND: Prospective study protocols and registrations can play a significant role in reducing incomplete or selective reporting of primary biomedical research, because they are pre-specified blueprints which are available for the evaluation of, and comparison with, full reports. However, inconsistencies between protocols or registrations and full reports have been frequently documented. In this systematic review, which forms part of our series on the state of reporting of primary biomedical, we aimed to survey the existing evidence of inconsistencies between protocols or registrations (i.e

We present evidence that the dog hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum) is underutilised in the study of host-parasite interactions, particularly as a proxy for the human-hookworm relationship. The inability to passage hookworms through all life stages in vitro means that adult stage hookworms have to be harvested from the gut of their definitive hosts for ex vivo research. This makes study of the human-hookworm interface difficult for technical and ethical reasons. The historical association of humans, dogs and hookworms presents a unique triad of positive evolutionary pressure to drive the A. caninu

Social and biomedical scientists, journal editors, and public health officials continue to debate the merits of the use of race and ethnicity in health-related research. As biomedical research focuses on issues of racial or ethnic health disparities, it remains unclear how biomedical scientists investigate race or ethnicity and health. This paper examines how biomedical researchers construct and analyze race or ethnicity in their studies and what conclusions they make about difference and health. Using content analysis of 204 biomedical research journal publications, which were supported by gr

Zebrafish are an effective animal model widely utilized in biomedical research. They are known for their rapid reproduction and substantial genetic similarity to humans. Their transparent embryos directly enable the visualization of developmental processes and disease progression. This makes zebrafish invaluable for studying a broad range of human diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative conditions. Compared with other vertebrate models, zebrafish offer several advantages, including ease of genome editing, cost-effective maintenance, and suitability for high-

The term intersex was increasingly used in biomedicine in the later twentieth century as a label for bodies with pathologized innate sex characteristics (here 'intersex variations').The term met its zenith in that domain circa 2006 but had earlier been appropriated by intersex activists, who demedicalized it and claimed it as a positive embodied difference. To this day, intersex activists continue to advocate against unnecessary and harmful medicalization of their bodies. Aware that language use influences how healthcare matters are understood, we here combine two approaches (Multidimensional

Research facilities have established animal adoption programs for laboratory animals. However, adoption to private owners is not an option for non-human primates (NHPs), so their post-research life presents a unique challenge. Here, we describe a collaborative effort between laboratory animal veterinarians and behavioral management staff in retiring NHPs in place to ensure their quality of life after the completion of research projects. The success of our retirement program hinges on our collaborative efforts to manage clinical diseases such as arthritis, amyloidosis, and diarrhea; to surgical

Research in the field of TBI (traumatic brain injury) has long been focused on severe brain injury, while the number of mild injuries far overweigh severe injuries. Mild head injuries constitute up to 95% of all traumatic head injuries. The purpose of this work is to identify mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) patients who are unlikely to benefit from CT (computed tomography) scanning. Biomarkers capable of clearly discriminating between CT-positive and CT-negative subjects are needed. Biomarkers hold the potential to document whether a concussion occurred, especially when the history is uncle

Publications by Chinese researchers in scientific journals have dramatically increased over the past decade; however, academic misconduct also becomes more prevalent in the country. The aim of this prospective study was to understand the perceptions of Chinese biomedical researchers towards academic misconduct and the trend from 2010 to 2015. A questionnaire comprising 10 questions was designed and then validated by ten biomedical researchers in China. In the years 2010 and 2015, respectively, the questionnaire was sent as a survey to biomedical researchers at teaching hospitals, universities,

This review examines the association of Asian liver flukes and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) from the standpoint of two contrasting research perspectives: that aligned with the biomedical model predominantly employed to date; and, that aligned with ecological (and evolutionary) thinking increasingly being used to frame research questions that address this association in Northeast Thailand. An examination of the assumptions that underlie most of this research, requisite of evidence-based health research, shows how a broadened research frame that incorporates 'ecologic' perspectives provides alternat
