Evaluating University Student Classroom Engagement, Reflective Expression, and Prosocial Intention Using Behavioral Observation and Learning Analytics.

To address the need for multidimensional assessments of student involvement beyond traditional metrics, this protocol describes a structured approach for evaluating classroom engagement, reflective expression, learning analytics activity, and prosocial intention in undergraduate courses. The protocol combines interval-based behavioral observation, weekly structured reflective writing, de-identified learning-management-system records, and a pre/post prosocial-intention questionnaire. The revised procedures provide a reproducible behavioral coding model, reflective-expression rubric with score e

On the Specificity and Permanence of Electroencephalography Functional Connectivity.

Functional connectivity, representing a statistical coupling relationship between different brain regions or electrodes, is an influential concept in clinical medicine and cognitive neuroscience. Electroencephalography-derived functional connectivity (EEG-FC) provides relevant characteristic information about individual differences in cognitive tasks and personality traits. However, it remains unclear whether these individual-dependent EEG-FCs remain relatively permanent across long-term sessions. This manuscript utilizes machine learning algorithms to explore the individual specificity and pe

SignatureGuard: hybrid CNN-transformer model for signature verification and identification across Arabic and English datasets.

Offline signature verification has a persistent Latin-script bias: most systems are built and evaluated on English datasets, while Arabic and other non-Latin scripts are largely absent from the benchmarking literature. SignatureGuard is a three-task framework that evaluates six hybrid CNN-transformer architectures on two offline signature benchmarks (one Arabic, ASVAR; one English, CEDAR) under a single shared preprocessing and training pipeline, enabling direct architectural comparison across writing systems. The three tasks are binary forgery detection, multi-class biometric identification,

The eye in forensic practice: In the dead.

Post-mortem examination of the eye provides valuable forensic information yet is often overlooked. This brief review focuses on determining the cause/manner of death and post-mortem interval. External eye findings like corneal haziness and tache noire, combined with post-mortem changes in the iris, lens, retina and vitreous humour, can help estimate time since death. Ocular biometrics (iris/retinal scans) may facilitate identification. Age-related ocular changes can provide insights. The eye offers clues into personality (corneal tattooing, trichotillomania) and cause of death (petechiae in st

Identification of trypanosomes isolated from reduviidae from north Chile.

Examination of 54 Triatoma infestans from a village near the European Southern Observatory La Silla in Chile and of 9 Triatoma spinolai from the territory of the observatory showed that 10 T. infestans were infected with trypanosomatids. Mice were infected with in vitro cultures initiated with five different trypanosomatid isolates and treated with the immunosuppressive drug cyclophosphamide to increase the parasitemia of the flagellates. Evidence of the presence of T. cruzi was provided by a comparative biometrical analysis of blood trypomastigotes and the occurrence of intracellular amastigo

Third-trimester uterine artery Doppler for prediction of adverse outcome in late small-and adequate for-gestational-age fetuses.

Fetal growth restriction includes all those fetuses that do not reach their own growth potential due to placental insufficiency and therefore at higher risk of adverse perinatal outcomes. Identification and follow-up of these fetuses is essential to decrease this additional risk. Although estimated fetal weight under the 3rd centile and pathological cerebroplacental ratio are the most accepted predictive criteria, some evidence suggests that abnormal uterine artery Doppler may be a useful prognostic parameter in late-onset growth restriction fetuses at the moment of diagnosis. However, its pre

Fast and automatic algorithm for optic disc extraction in retinal images using principle-component-analysis-based preprocessing and curvelet transform.

Optic disc or optic nerve (ON) head extraction in retinal images has widespread applications in retinal disease diagnosis and human identification in biometric systems. This paper introduces a fast and automatic algorithm for detecting and extracting the ON region accurately from the retinal images without the use of the blood-vessel information. In this algorithm, to compensate for the destructive changes of the illumination and also enhance the contrast of the retinal images, we estimate the illumination of background and apply an adaptive correction function on the curvelet transform coeffi

Prenatal diagnosis of a likely pathogenic variant in ZBTB18: Natural evolution of fetal phenotype including the long bones and corpus callosum.

Pathogenic variants in ZBTB18 gene have been described only postnatally with a variable phenotypic spectrum that includes intellectual disability, microcephaly, hypotonia, poor growth, corpus callosum abnormalities, seizures, and dysmorphic facial features. These features overlap with the phenotype of 1q43-q44 deletion syndrome (OMIM #612337). There are several genes within the 1q43-q44 deletion region, and ZBTB18 is of particular interest due to its known involvement in neuronal differentiation and migration. We describe here a fetus presenting with an intrauterine growth restriction, diminis

Motor speech and non-motor language endophenotypes of Parkinson's disease.

Introduction: Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease (PD) results in a range of motor and non-motor impairments. Clinical diagnosis commonly occurs after substantial neurophysiological damage limiting the opportunity for neuroprotective treatments. Uncovering sensitive objective markers with the capacity to detect pre-symptomatic disease and track disease progression is therefore a priority. Speech may provide an ideal proxy marker for PD; a quantifiable biometric that displays salient changes in early disease and appears to evolve with disease progression.Areas covered: This review describes the endo

DNA recovery from 3D printed firearms.

Over the last few years, additive manufacturing, by means of fused deposition modelling 3D printing, has become increasingly popular and accessible due to the relative low costs, flexibility, and continually lowering barriers for entry. Unfortunately, while this technology is not only used by hobbyists for creative or practical creation of custom objects using a variety of thermoplastic materials, they can also be used in the manufacture of firearms. From fully printed to hybrid designs, AM/3D printing has been used to produce parts for fully functional firearms capable of discharging conventi

A Wearable Electrochemical Sensor Based on a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Integrated with a Copper Benzene-1,3,5-Tricarboxylate Metal-Organic Framework for the On-Body Monitoring of Cortisol in Sweat.

Owing to their potential to transform traditional medical diagnostics and health monitoring, wearable biosensors have become an alternative evolutionary technology in the field of medical care. However, it is still necessary to overcome some key technique challenges, such as the selectivity, sensitivity, and stability of biometric identification. Herein, a novel, wearable electrochemical sensor based on a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) integrated with a copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate metal-organic framework (MOF) was designed for the detection of stress through the on-body monitoring

Morphological and molecular characterization of Trichuris muris (Nematoda: Trichuridae): studies from two commensal rodent species.

In this paper we re-describe Trichuris muris based on morphological data following isolation from two commensal rodent species, Mus musculus from Mexico and Rattus rattus from Argentina. Furthermore, we provide a molecular characterization based on mitochondrial (cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 mitochondrial gene) and nuclear (internal transcribed spacer 2 region) markers in order to support the taxonomic identification of the studied specimens of T. muris from M. musculus. We distinguished T. muris from 29 species of Trichuris found in American rodents based on morphological and biometrical fe

MetaCAM as an ensemble-based class activation mapping framework improves model explainability.

The need for clear, trustworthy explanations of deep learning model predictions is essential for high-criticality fields, such as medicine and biometric identification. Class Activation Maps (CAMs) are an increasingly popular category of visual explanation methods for Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). However, the performance of individual CAMs depends largely on experimental parameters such as the selected image, target class, and model. Here, we propose MetaCAM, an ensemble-based method for combining multiple existing CAM methods based on the consensus of the top-k% most highly activated

AI-Driven Defecation Analysis by Smart Healthcare Toilet: Exploring Biometric Patterns and Eu-Tenesmus.

Defecation, a fundamental physiological process, remains underexplored despite its importance in human health. To address this gap, a smart toilet system is developed that enables real-time monitoring of defecation behaviors. Analyzing 45 defecation events from 11 participants, key defecation parameters are identified, including stool dropping duration, stool thickness, and eu-tenesmus interval. Stool dropping duration follows a log-normal distribution, with longer durations (>5 s) linked to lower Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) scores, suggesting constipation (p = 0.008 for BSFS1/2/3 vs BSFS5

Whisker deafferentation and rodent whisking patterns: behavioral evidence for a central pattern generator.

Even in the absence of explicit stimulation, rats emit patterns of rhythmic whisking movements. Because of their stereotyped nature and their persistence after sensory denervation and cortical ablation, whisking movements have been assumed to reflect the output of a central pattern generator (CPG). However, identification of a movement pattern as the product of a CPG requires evidence that its generation, patterning, and coordination are independent of sensory input. To provide such evidence, we used optoelectronic instrumentation to obtain high-resolution records of the movement trajectories

Effects of PeptiSleep™ on sleep modification and biometrics in adults with sleep impairment: A randomised, placebo-controlled pilot study.

Sleep is vital for longevity and daily function but is under threat due to modern culture. While pharmaceuticals induce and prolong sleep, dependency and side effects can be significant. Artificial intelligence and peptide science have accelerated the accurate identification of natural, bioavailable compounds in a way previously limited to pharmaceutical discovery. This randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel pilot study investigated the effects of a rice protein hydrolysate, PeptiSleep™, on sleep quality in 26 adults (18-65 years old) with sleep impairment over 56 days.
