Biomimetic hydroxyapatite nanocrystals are an active carrier for Salmonella bacteriophages.

PURPOSE: The use of bacteriophages represents a valid alternative to conventional antimicrobial treatments, overcoming the widespread bacterial antibiotic resistance phenomenon. In this work, we evaluated whether biomimetic hydroxyapatite (HA) nanocrystals are able to enhance some properties of bacteriophages. The final goal of this study was to demonstrate that biomimetic HA nanocrystals can be used for bacteriophage delivery in the context of bacterial infections, and contribute - at the same time - to enhance some of the biological properties of the same bacteriophages such as stability, pr

Multipronged Biomimetic Approach To Create Optically Tunable Nanoparticles.

Current biomimetics for medical applications use a single biomimetic approach to imitate natural structures, which can be insufficient for reconstructing structurally complex natural systems. Multipronged efforts may resolve these complexities. To achieve interesting nanostructure-driven optical properties, a dual-biomimetic system contained within a single nanoagent was engineered to recapitulate chlorosomes, efficient light-harvesting organelles that have unique dye assemblies and tunable photonic properties. A series of chlorin dyes was synthesized, and these hydrophobic assemblies were sta

Novel biomimetic enzyme for sensitive detection of superoxide anions.

Superoxide anion (O2•-), one of the most active reactive oxygen species (ROS) in micro-environment of the human body, is involved in some diseases if there is excess O2•- associated with oxidative stress. Accurate detection of its concentration has important medical diagnostic significance. In this work, a new electrochemical sensor was designed and fabricated for sensitive detection based on Mn-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) that decorated onto the surface of magnetic polymeric nanotubes by surface self-assembly processes. The composite nanotubes were characterized by transmission electron micr

Small-Scale Fabrication of Biomimetic Structures for Periodontal Regeneration.

The periodontium is the supporting tissues for the tooth organ and is vulnerable to destruction, arising from overpopulating pathogenic bacteria and spirochaetes. The presence of microbes together with host responses can destroy large parts of the periodontium sometimes leading tooth loss. Permanent tissue replacements are made possible with tissue engineering techniques. However, existing periodontal biomaterials cannot promote proper tissue architectures, necessary tissue volumes within the periodontal pocket and a "water-tight" barrier, to become clinically acceptable. New kinds of small-sc

Self-assembly of nanoparticles into biomimetic capsid-like nanoshells.

Nanoscale compartments are one of the foundational elements of living systems. Capsids, carboxysomes, exosomes, vacuoles and other nanoshells easily self-assemble from biomolecules such as lipids or proteins, but not from inorganic nanomaterials because of difficulties with the replication of spherical tiling. Here we show that stabilizer-free polydispersed inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) can spontaneously organize into porous nanoshells. The association of water-soluble CdS NPs into self-limited spherical capsules is the result of scale-modified electrostatic, dispersion and other colloidal for

Biomimetic approaches for cell implantation to the restoration of infarcted myocardium.

Compelling evidences accumulated over the years have proven stem cells as a promising source for regenerative medicine. However, the inadequacy with the design of delivery modalities has prolonged the research in realizing an ideal cell-based approach for the regeneration of infarcted myocardium. Currently, some modest improvements in cardiac function have been documented in clinical trials with stem cell treatments, although regenerating a fully functional myocardium remains a dream for cardiac surgeons. This review provides an overview on the significance of stem cell therapy, the current at

Biomimetic scaffold design for functional and integrative tendon repair.

Rotator cuff tears represent the most common shoulder injuries in the United States. The debilitating effect of this degenerative condition coupled with the high incidence of failure associated with existing graft choices underscores the clinical need for alternative grafting solutions. The 2 critical design criteria for the ideal tendon graft would require the graft to not only exhibit physiologically relevant mechanical properties but also be able to facilitate functional graft integration by promoting the regeneration of the native tendon-to-bone interface. Centered on these design goals, t

Application of biomimetic mineralization: a prophylactic therapy for cracked teeth?

Cracked teeth are usually found and easily ignored in clinic. If not found in time, they can lead to pulpitis and teeth fractures, which even can make the cracked teeth pulled out. The current treatments for cracked teeth include occlusal adjustments or preventive fillings, and the root canal therapy or complete crown restoration, which is decided according to the depth of cracks. However, the successful rate of preserving cracked teeth is less than 50% through occlusal adjustments and preventive fillings. Although the successful rate can reach 80% through the root canal therapy and complete c

Biomimetic remineralization of resin-bonded acid-etched dentin.

Degradation of denuded collagen within adhesive resin-infiltrated dentin is a pertinent problem in dentin bonding. A biomimetic remineralization scheme that incorporates non-classic crystallization pathways of fluidic amorphous nanoprecursors and mesoscopic transformation has been successful in remineralizing resin-free, acid-etched dentin, with evidence of intrafibrillar and interfibrillar remineralization. This study tested the hypothesis that biomimetic remineralization provides a means for remineralizing incompletely infiltrated resin-dentin interfaces created by etch-and-rinse adhesives.

Examination of abiotic cofactor assembly in photosynthetic biomimetics: site-specific stereoselectivity in the conjugation of a ruthenium(II) tris(bipyridine) photosensitizer to a multi-heme protein.

To understand design principles for assembling photosynthetic biohybrids that incorporate precisely-controlled sites for electron injection into redox enzyme cofactor arrays, we investigated the influence of chirality in assembly of the photosensitizer ruthenium(II)bis(2,2'-bipyridine)(4-bromomethyl-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine), Ru(bpy)2(Br-bpy), when covalently conjugated to cysteine residues introduced by site-directed mutagenesis in the triheme periplasmic cytochrome A (PpcA) as a model biohybrid system. Biomimetic smartphone sensor for point-of-care l-dopa monitoring.

Point-of-care analysis of levodopa (l-dopa) in patients' blood is crucial yet challenging for the scientific management of Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, inspired by the catalytic mechanism of tyrosinase, we developed a biomimetic smartphone sensor for point-of-care monitoring of l-dopa. This sensor employs a copper-based biomimetic recognition layer, synthesized via one-step electrochemical polymerization of l-serine (L-Ser), l-histidine (L-His), and copper ions, which forms binuclear copper complexes mimicking the active site of tyrosinase, thereby enabling specific recognition and

Biomimetic engineering of a fortified ice composite with enhanced mechanical properties.

This work presents BioPykrete, a high-performance sustainable bio-composite engineered from ice, cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), and a custom chimeric protein designed to facilitate interfacial adhesion. By genetically fusing the ice-binding protein AFPIII with the carbohydrate-binding module CBM3a, we developed a chimeric protein to act as a molecular "bioadhesive" bridging the crystalline reinforcement phase to the ice matrix. During the controlled solidification of the suspension, the CBM3a-AFPIII chimera is proposed to regulate the self-organisation of the CNC fibers into a reinforcing 3D ne

Biomimetic ferroelectric-semiconductor transistor enables neuronal multisensory integration.

Human brain seamlessly integrates multisensory stimuli to synthesize complementary information for enhanced perceptions, depending on neural principles of superadditivity, inverse effectiveness, and temporal congruency. Replicating multisensory integration in artificial intelligences has remained challenging due to the inefficiency of algorithmic fusions and the absence of hardware-native mechanisms. Here, we demonstrate biomimetic audiovisual integration at the device level of Bi2O2Se ferroelectric-semiconductor field-effect transistors (FeS-FETs) through multiphysics coupling. Our FeS-FETs s

Convergence in Coevolved Systems: A Two-Axis Filter for Biomimetic Transferability.

Biomimetics often treats convergent evolution as the strongest sign that a biological solution is general. That inference is safest when the constraint does not counter-adapt. Hosts do. In coevolved host-interface systems, recurrence alone cannot tell us whether a solution is translatable. Biomimetic transferability depends first on two axes: conservation of the host target and versatility of the attacking lineage. A conserved target behaves, for translational purposes, like a biochemical constraint, a broad-host parasite has already tested its mechanism across biological variation. The window

Biomimetic Mineralized Capsules for Haematococcus pluvialis Clustering and Functional Regulation.

Astaxanthin is a high-value ketocarotenoid with potent antioxidant activity and wide applications in nutraceutical, cosmetic, and aquaculture industries. The green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis represents the most promising natural source; however, its efficient production requires precise control of growth and stress conditions, while free cells remain susceptible to environmental and mechanical stress. Hydrogel encapsulation offers a protective microenvironment, yet conventional alginate systems are limited by poor mechanical stability and uncontrolled swelling. Here, we report calcium a

Biomimetic molecular recognition of nucleotides by macrocyclic and cage hosts in water.

Nucleotides are essential molecules in biology, acting as building blocks of DNA and RNA, energy carriers, and signalling molecules. They also function as coenzymes that support key metabolic and catalytic processes. This tutorial focuses on the development of synthetic receptors-especially macrocyclic and cage-like structures-that can selectively bind nucleotides. Studying these systems helps scientists better understand molecular recognition in biology and enables techniques like monitoring nucleotide levels in cells. The review emphasizes recent progress in receptor design, exploring their

Biomimetic Nanoparticles for Bone Regeneration: Construction Strategies and Therapeutic Mechanisms.

Bone tissue is the hardest and most dynamic connective tissue in the human body, and its integrity is essential for maintaining both mechanical support and physiological functions. However, with the aging population, the incidence of fractures, osteoporosis, and bone defects has risen significantly, severely impairing patients' quality of life and creating a substantial social burden. Although autologous or allogeneic bone grafts and metallic or non-metallic implants can partially restore bone defects, their long-term efficacy is constrained by donor shortages, immune rejection, and limited re
