Dual engine-driven bionic microneedles for early intervention and prolonged treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

The microneedle (MN) delivery system presents an attractive administration route for patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, the passive drug delivery mode and low drug loading of MNs often result in unsatisfactory therapeutic efficiency. To address these dilemmas, we developed dual engine-drive bionic MNs for robust AD treatment. Specifically, free rivastigmine (RVT) and RVT particles were co-loaded within the MNs to construct the valve and chambers of the guava, respectively, which can serve as an active engine to promote drug permeation by generating capillary force. Targeted muscle reinnervation in bionic upper limb reconstruction: current status and future directions.

Selective nerve transfers are used in the setting of upper limb amputation to improve myoelectric prosthesis control. This surgical concept is referred to as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) and describes the rerouting of the major nerves of the arm onto the motor branches of the residual limb musculature. Aside from providing additional myosignals for prosthetic control, TMR can treat and prevent neuroma pain and possibly also phantom limb pain. This article reviews the history and current applications of TMR in upper limb amputation, with a focus on practical considerations. It further ex

A Single-Component Janus Zwitterionic Hydrogel Patch with a Bionic Microstructure for Postoperative Adhesion Prevention.

The development of anti-adhesion hydrogels for preventing postoperative adhesions is an ongoing challenge, particularly in achieving a balance between exceptional antifouling properties and effective in situ tissue retention. In this study, we propose a unique approach with the design of a single-component Janus zwitterionic hydrogel patch featuring a bionic microstructure. The Janus patches were prepared through free radical polymerization of sulfobetaine methacrylate with N, N'-methylenebis(2-propenamide) as the cross-linker. The incorporation of hexagonal facets separated by interconnecting

A bionic bird jumping grasping structure design based on stm32 development board control.

During takeoff and landing, birds bounce and grab with their legs and feet. In this paper, the lower limb structure of the bionic bird is designed with reference to the function of jumping and grasping, and the PID algorithm based on the development module of stm32 development board is used to speed control the lower limb driving element, so that the motor and the bishaft steering gear move with the rate change of sine wave. According to the speed of grasping response time and the size of grasping force, the structure of the bionic bird paw is designed. Based on the photosensitive sensor fixed

Revealing the inherent running mechanism of quadruped mammals based on a novel bionic stiffness model.

In this paper, the limb of a goat is chosen as the research object, and according to mammalian anatomy, a bionic model called the quasi inverted pendulum with "J" curve spring (QIPJCS) model with nonlinear stiffness is built, and the equations of motion are derived. Based on these equations, the advantages of the QIPJCS model are illustrated from the aspect of the stable motion region by the SFA (step-to-fall analysis) numerical simulation method. These results are compared with the traditional SLIP model. Furthermore, the ARM (Apex-Return-Map) of this model is built, and the fixed points are

Modulation of the dissolution with ASP from a supersaturated solution on a bionic platform for gout pathology crystals.

The core to the treatment of gout is the elimination of pathologic crystal, monosodium urate monohydrate (MSUM). The primary treatment available is to gradually dissolve the "culprit crystals" by lowering the blood uric acid concentration with medications, which often takes a long time and in severe cases must still be treated surgically. Herein, we developed a dynamic bionic platform based on a hydrogel composite membrane (HCM) to screen the direct facilitated solubilization of MSUM crystals by small organic molecules in bionic saturated, or even supersaturated, solutions. The customized and

A 3D Printed, Bionic Hand Powered by EMG Signals and Controlled by an Online Neural Network.

About 8% of the Ecuadorian population suffers some type of amputation of upper or lower limbs. Due to the high cost of a prosthesis and the fact that the salary of an average worker in the country reached 248 USD in August 2021, they experience a great labor disadvantage and only 17% of them are employed. Thanks to advances in 3D printing and the accessibility of bioelectric sensors, it is now possible to create economically accessible proposals. This work proposes the design of a hand prosthesis that uses electromyography (EMG) signals and neural networks for real-time control. The integrated

A Real-Time Bionic Method Inspired by Neural Oscillators for Estimation and Extraction of Pathological Tremor.

The typical representative of pathological tremor is Parkinson's disease. One of the pathogenesis is that the synchronized neural oscillations within and between brain areas are affected. Inspired by this, this work proposes an algorithm based on neural oscillator to extract voluntary motion and estimate tremor motion in real time, which is named as RTBNO. This algorithm is composed of multiple adaptive modified Hopf oscillators linear combiner. The combiner is divided into two parts: one is used to estimate tremor motion and the other is applied to estimate voluntary motion. As it is updated

Seamlessly Adhesive Bionic Periosteum Patches Via Filling Microcracks for Defective Bone Healing.

Current artificial designs of the periosteum focus on osteogenic or angiogenic properties, while ignoring the filling and integration with bone microcracks, which trigger a prolonged excessive inflammatory reaction and lead to failure of bone regeneration. In this study, seamless adhesive biomimetic periosteum patches (HABP/Sr-PLA) were prepared to fill microcracks in defective bone via interfacial self-assembly induced by Sr ions mediated metal-ligand interactions among pamidronate disodium-modified hyaluronic acid (HAPD), black phosphorus (BP), and hydrophilic polylactic acid (PLA). Development of an implantable bionic for dynamic eye closure in facial nerve paralysis: Evolution of the design.

Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) presents with a constellation of clinical problems but its most concerning consequence is corneal exposure from lack of blinking. Bionic lid implant for natural closure (BLINC) is an implantable solution for dynamic eye closure in FNP. It uses an electromagnetic actuator to mobilise the dysfunctional eyelid by means of an eyelid sling. This study highlights issues relating to device biocompatibility and describes its evolution to overcome some of these issues. The essential components of the device are the actuator, the electronics including energy storage, and an

Bionic sensing system and characterization of exhaled nitric oxide detection based on canine olfaction.

A quantitative monitoring system for fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) in homes is very important for the control of respiratory diseases such as asthma. To this end, this paper proposes a small bionic sensing system for NO detection in an electronic nose based on analysis of the structure of the canine olfactory system and the airflow pattern in the nasal cavity. The proposed system detected NO at different FENO concentration levels with different bionic sensing systems in the electronic nose, and analyzed the data comparatively. Combined with a backpropagation neural network algorithm,

The design and evaluation of bionic porous bone scaffolds in fluid flow characteristics and mechanical properties.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: At present, there is a lack of efficient modeling methods for bionic artificial bone scaffolds, and the tissue fluid/nutrient mass transport characteristics of bone scaffolds has not been evaluated sufficiently. This study aims to explore an effective and efficient modeling method for biomimetic porous bone scaffolds for biological three-dimensional printing based on the imitation of the histomorphological characteristics of human vertebral cancellous bone. The fluid mass transport and mechanical characteristics of the porous scaffolds were evaluated and compared with

Screening and diagnosis of colorectal cancer and advanced adenoma by Bionic Glycome method and machine learning.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), one of the major health problems worldwide, mostly develops from colorectal adenomas. Advanced adenomas are generally considered as precancerous lesions and patients are recommended to remove the adenomas. Screening for colorectal cancer is usually performed by fecal tests (FOBT or FIT) and colonoscopy, however, their benefits are limited by uptake and adherence. Most CRC develops from colorectal advanced adenomas, but there is currently a lack of effective noninvasive screening method for advanced adenomas. N-glycans in human serum hold the great potentials as biomark

A pneumatic Bionic Voice prosthesis-Pre-clinical trials of controlling the voice onset and offset.

Despite emergent progress in many fields of bionics, a functional Bionic Voice prosthesis for laryngectomy patients (larynx amputees) has not yet been achieved, leading to a lifetime of vocal disability for these patients. This study introduces a novel framework of Pneumatic Bionic Voice Prostheses as an electronic adaptation of the Pneumatic Artificial Larynx (PAL) device. The PAL is a non-invasive mechanical voice source, driven exclusively by respiration with an exceptionally high voice quality, comparable to the existing gold standard of Tracheoesophageal (TE) voice prosthesis. Osteogenic potential and synergistic effects of growth factors delivered from a bionic composite system.

Previous research has raised substantial controversy over the synergistic effects of exogenous growth factors, BMP-2 and bFGF, when used together for the treatment of bony defects. Thus, this study evaluated the effects of BMP-2 and bFGF at specified dose ratio composited with n-HA/PU40, a porous scaffold material, for repairing femoral defect in rats. Four weeks after implantation of this composite system, tissue specimens were collected for histological, immunohistochemical examinations, and µ-CT scanning. The results showed that the group DUAL/BMSCs with both the factors had better effect o

A Bionic Pneumatic Shoulder Exosuit for Multi-DOF Assistance and Load-Bearing Augmentation in Rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: The shoulder joint is pivotal for upper-limb kinematics, yet individuals with post-stroke hemiparesis often require external shoulder support because of impaired motor control, excessive gravitational loading, and the risk of glenohumeral complications. Existing rehabilitation exoskeletons still face challenges in combining compliant movement assistance with sufficient antigravity load support. METHODS: This study proposes a Pneumatic Shoulder Exosuit (PSE) designed to provide compliant multi-DOF shoulder assistance and augment load-bearing capacity during rehabilitation. The dual
