Campylobacter is the leading cause of human bacterial diarrhoeal disease worldwide, with poultry meat products contributing to a large proportion of cases. Due to the ubiquitous presence of Campylobacter in the poultry farm environment, biosecurity is the main area for intervention to prevent colonisation of commercial broiler chicken flocks. However, research has repeatedly demonstrated that farmers' uptake of biosecurity recommendations is often poor. This study explored farmers' attitudes towards biosecurity and identified barriers to effective implementation of biosecurity protocols. Semi-

Biting midges, Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae), are significant vectors capable of transmitting arboviruses, such as bluetongue virus, to livestock. New Zealand is free of Culicoides, and a national surveillance programme is in place for the early detection of an incursion. Traditionally, insect trap samples from the surveillance programme are analyzed using morphology-based diagnostics under microscopes, which is time-consuming and relies on specialized taxonomic expertise. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of DNA metabarcoding using insect bulk samples and environmental DNA (eDN

BACKGROUND: The brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) (BSMB) is a biosecurity threat globally. Its most likely avenue of entry is via shipping transport of a multitude of commodities. Currently employed biosecurity treatments (methyl bromide, sulfuryl fluoride) pose several concerns including climate change, environmental and occupational health and safety. Ethyl formate with dilution in carbon dioxide has been shown to be an effective biosecurity treatment for controlling BMSB. Carbon dioxide is a known synergist in fumigation and is a greenhouse gas contributing to climate change.

A serologic and epidemiologic study was carried out in order to determinate herd and animal seroprevalence and associated factors for Toxoplasma gondii in commercial pigs from Espírito Santo state, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 416 pigs from 55 producer farms in 27 municipalities. An indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) was performed to estimate the seroprevalence of T. gondii and identify the associated risk factors using a questionnaire. The T. gondii antibody prevalence rate in commercial swine herds was 15.4% (64/416) using a cutoff of 1:64. The seropositivity for T. gondii w

Interactions with livestock in public settings such as county and state fairs can expose people and other livestock to faecal material capable of spreading zoonotic enteric pathogens. The goal of this study was to understand these risks by screening livestock faeces (n = 245) and livestock bedding (n = 155) for common zoonotic pathogens (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Salmonella and Campylobacter spp.) and by measuring faecal indicator, Escherichia coli, concentrations in drinking water (n = 153), feed containers (n = 124) and bedding material (n = 157) in four livestock species (cattle, sheep, goa

Duck meat consumption in South Korea has increased in recent years, but no standard about duck farm-specific biosecurity and hygiene guidelines have yet been established. We here investigated Salmonella contamination levels in duck farms to evaluate biosecurity and hygiene practices. We collected 1,116 environmental samples from 31 duck farms in Jeonnam Province, South Korea. The Salmonella-positive farm rate dramatically increased, from 22.6 to 71.0%, on introduction of ducklings. As the ducklings aged 4-6 wk, the positive rate slightly decreased to 64.5%. The Salmonella detection rate on eac

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine has transformed both the modern battlefield and the microbial environment surrounding the war-wounded. Explosive injuries, prolonged evacuation, and limited opportunities for early decontamination have contributed to an unprecedented rise in multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) infections. This paper describes how routine infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) systems have become inadequate under conflict conditions and how contamination evolves into colonization and then systemic infection as casualties move through th

BACKGROUND: Salmonella Dublin (S. Dublin) affects both cattle health and public safety due to its host adaptation, antimicrobial resistance, and persistence in subclinical carriers. Although well documented in dairy systems, its epidemiology in U.S. dairy-origin cattle raised for beef (dairy-beef) remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To design and validate a multiplex PCR (mPCR) assay for environmental detection of S. Dublin, apply mPCR alongside culture to estimate environmental occurrence in dairy-beef farms, and identify farm-level practices associated with detection.
METHODS: Previously desc

Internal biosecurity may be associated with antimicrobial use (AMU) in pig production, but observational associations, predictions and explanations of fitted models answer different questions. We analysed 1110 farm-month-age-group units from 18 Hungarian pig farms; an original post hoc restriction retained 939 units from 13 farms. The continuous endpoint was the natural logarithm of one plus a defined AMU index formed by summing substance-specific active ingredient mass-to-recorded-weight ratios. The study-specific biosecurity instrument was used for within-farm monitoring and was not external

Universities and colleges are often regarded as playing a key role in educating veterinarians and animal health workers who advise farmers on herd health and animal husbandry. However, to date, studies examining veterinary students' knowledge of zoonotic diseases of public health importance and the source of this knowledge, as well as their preparedness to respond to these diseases, have focused on the Global North rather than the Global South. This study takes Ethiopia as a case study in exploring veterinary medicine students' knowledge of zoonosis risks, infection control practices and biose

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing global health threat requiring robust biosafety, biosecurity, and surveillance systems across human, animal, and environmental sectors. However, evidence on how these systems function at sub-national and facility levels remains limited, particularly in decentralized settings such as Kenya. This scoping review was conducted in line with PRISMA-ScR reporting standards to map evidence on AMR containment systems in Kenya. Peer-reviewed and grey literature covering governance, surveillance, laboratory capacity, workforce, biosafety and biosecurity, digita

Fresh vegetables cultivated in small-scale household systems may facilitate the transmission of foodborne parasitic structures due to environmental exposure and inconsistent hygienic conditions. This study identified the presence, prevalence, and distribution of enteric parasitic structures in vegetables and soils from family farming systems undergoing an agroecological transition process in the Colón-Génova subregion, Colombia, and characterized the biosecurity measures employed by producers. Standard parasitological methods were used to analyze vegetable samples (n = 216) from six horticultu

Animal disease outbreaks, such as the recent outbreak of African Swine Fever in 2018, are a major concern for stakeholders across the food supply chain due to their potential to disrupt global food security, cause economic losses, and threaten animal welfare. As a result of their transboundary nature, discussions have shifted to preventive measures aimed at protecting livestock while ensuring food security and safety. Emergency assistance has been a critical response option during pandemics. However, this may not be sustainable in the long run because the expectation of government bailout may

Biosecurity plays an irreplaceable role in preventing diseases and increasing productivity on farm. The main objective of this study was to characterize pig farming and investigate factors influencing biosecurity on pig farms in the western highlands of Cameroon. Data were collected from May to July 2017 using a questionnaire and observations. A technical scoring system was developed from the biosecurity measures. The results revealed that most farmers are males (76.29%), on average 47.82 ± 10.34 years old, with secondary school level (53.61%). The most common husbandry system is extensive (73

The term 'biosecurity' encompasses many measures farmers can take to reduce the risk of pathogen incursion or spread. As the best strategy will vary between settings, veterinarians play an important role in assessing risk and providing advice, but effectiveness requires farmer acceptance and implementation. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of specifically-tailored biosecurity advice packages in reducing endemic pathogen presence on UK beef suckler farms. One hundred and sixteen farms recruited by 10 veterinary practices were followed for three years. Farms were randomly al

The emergence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 in dairy cattle has presented a major challenge for dairy producers in the USA, who have had to make biosecurity decisions with limited information while balancing evolving guidance, existing beliefs, and farm management constraints. This study aimed to 1) describe dairy producers' perceptions and understanding of HPAI; 2) characterize experiences and perceived impacts among producers affected by HPAI; 3) identify farm characteristics associated with implementation of biosecurity changes in response to HPAI risk; and 4) assess whet

This study advocates for the strategic repositioning of local animal genetic resources, re-evaluating them not merely as remnants of cultural heritage but as critical biological archives essential for ensuring future food security. The contemporary livestock sector is navigating a precarious transition as global production systems encounter an ecosystem based bottleneck induced by decades of intensive monoculture. By contrasting the physiological and genetic characteristics of high yield industrial breeds with the inherent resilience of local genotypes, the research highlights a fundamental tr

INTRODUCTION: Poultry production accounts for 42% of Cameroonian meat production. However, infectious diseases represent the main hindrance in this sector, resulting in overuse and misuse of antimicrobials that can contribute to the emergence and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) conferring resistance to carbapenems (blaVIM-2 and blaNDM ), (fluoro) quinolones (qnrS, qnrA, and qnrB), polymyxins (mcr1 to mcr5), and macrolides (ermA and ermB) in the poultry farm environment. Additionally, the study
