Petroleum is, up to this date, an inimitable nonrenewable energy resource. Petroleum leakage, which arises during transport, storage, and refining, is the most important contaminant in the environment, as it produces harm to the surrounding ecosystem. Bioremediation is an efficient method used to treat petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated soil using indigenous microorganisms. The degradation characteristics for a variety of hydrocarbons (hexane, benzene, gasoline, and diesel) were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated using Bacillus isolates. Microbiological and biochemical methods have

Heavy metals from industrial effluents and sewage contribute to serious water pollution in most developing countries. The constant penetration and contamination of heavy metals into natural water sources may substantially raise the chances of human exposure to these metals through ingestion, inhalation, or skin contact, which could lead to liver damage, cancer, and other severe conditions in the long term. Biosurfactant as an efficient biological surface-active agent may provide an alternative solution for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastes. Biosurfactants exhibit the propertie

The stabilization of essential oils in emulsions using surfactants of natural origin is of significant interest, and the use of biosurfactants produced by lactic acid bacteria could be an alternative. In this study, the total and partial substitution of Tween 80 in cinnamon bark essential oil emulsions was proposed using a glycolipopeptide biosurfactant produced by Lactiplantibacillus plantarum Tw226. The oil-in-water emulsions formulated contained cinnamon bark oil at a concentration of 5 g/L, with Tween 80, the biosurfactant, or a mixture of both as the surfactant agent, reaching a final con

Antimicrobial drug resistance (AMR) from improper use of antibiotics in various livestock products is a growing hazard for humans worldwide, with current death rate in excess of 700,000 per annum linked to the problem. Microorganisms are a rich source of structurally distinct bioactive compounds designed to protect the microbes and can offset AMR challenge. A study was conducted at Chinhoyi University of Technology to isolate, identify and characterize biosurfactant secreting microbes from broiler bird's gastrointestinal tract. Analysis of variance was performed in Genstat software. 16S rRNA t

Biosurfactants are amphipathic molecules produced by many microorganisms, usually bacteria, fungi, and yeasts. They possess the property of reducing the tension of the membrane interfaces. No studies have been conducted on Shigella species showing the role of biosurfactant-like molecules (BLM) in pathogenicity. The aim of this study is to assess the ability of Shigella environmental and clinical strains to produce BLM and investigate the involvement of biosurfactants in pathogenicity. Our study has shown that BLM are secreted in the extracellular medium with EI24 ranging from 80% to 100%. The

Biosurfactants are surface-active agents produced by microorganisms whose use in soil remediation processes is increasingly discussed as a more environmentally friendly alternative than chemically produced surfactants. In this work, we report the production of a biosurfactant by a bacterial community extracted from a polluted soil, mainly impacted by PAHs, in order to use it in a soil-washing process coupled with bioremediation. Nutrient balance was a critical parameter to optimize the production. Best conditions for biosurfactant production were found to be 20 g/L of glucose, 2 g/L of NH4NO3,

The rising global need for natural gas and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions highlight the significance of innovative storage solutions like hydrate-based solidified gas technology. Gas hydrates offer great potential as an efficient and safe method for storing methane and carbon dioxide. However, it faces operational challenges, primarily due to foam formation during gas recovery, which adversely affects efficiency and increases operational costs. As the gas hydrates dissociate, they release significant volumes of gas into the surrounding water. Surfactants reduce the surface tension o

Six biosurfactant-producing bacteria were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soils in Sfax, Tunisia. Isolates were screened for biosurfactant production by different conventional methods including hemolytic activity, surface tension reduction, drop-collapsing and oil displacement tests. All these screening tests show that all the isolates behave differently. Among the isolated bacteria, DCS1 strain was selected for further studies based on its highest activities and it was identified as Bacillus methylotrophicus DCS1. This strain was found to be a potent producer of biosurfactant when cult

The global prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection has led to the practice of multiple treatments with antibiotics as the standard treatment strategy. However, antibiotic resistance has led to a decline in therapeutic effectiveness, prompting the exploration of innovative and eco-friendly antimicrobial agents. Microbial biosurfactants have gained attention because of their antibacterial activities, making them a good choice for treating various bacterial infections. Therefore, our study aimed to identify active biosurfactants, their potential targets, and the accompanying signa

To address the water-oil-cell interfacial mass-transfer barrier limiting microbial degradation of heavy crude oil, this study evaluated a biosurfactant-nonionic mixed-micelle strategy that integrates interfacial performance with microbial compatibility. Four binary surfactant systems were screened using the petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading consortium B10. Among them, the rhamnolipid/Triton X-100 formulation, designated RT, showed the best overall balance of mixed-micelle synergy, crude-oil solubilization, microbial growth compatibility, and apparent hydrocarbon attenuation. After 7 d, RT achiev

The increasing resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to antimicrobials has driven the search for safe and sustainable alternatives. In this context, microbial biosurfactants have gained prominence due to their antimicrobial activity, low toxicity, and high stability under extreme conditions. This study presents the production and characterization of a biosurfactant with antimicrobial potential, obtained from Bacillus subtilis isolated from soil, for application in the control of resistant strains. Bacterial identification was performed using mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF), confirming it as Ba

Surfactants can reduce the interfacial surface tension between two immiscible liquids making them a desirable component for various industrial applications. However, the toxic nature of chemical surfactants brought immense attention towards biosurfactants. Being biodegradable, biosurfactants are eco-friendly and considered safer for different commercial uses. This study focused on the production of biosurfactant from an oil-degrading bacteria and its functional efficacy for prospective industrial applications. Here, a promising oil-tolerant strain, Bacillus velezensis S2 was isolated from oil

Highly hydrophobic compounds like petroleum and their byproducts, once released into the environment, can persist indefinitely by virtue of their ability to resist microbial degradation, ultimately paving the path to severe environmental pollution. Likewise, the accumulation of toxic heavy metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, etc., in the surroundings poses an alarming threat to various living organisms. To remediate the matter in question, the applicability of a biosurfactant produced from the mangrove bacterium Bacillus pumilus NITDID1 (Accession No. KY678446.1) is reported here. The structu

The production of biosurfactant by Pseudomonas aeruginosa TGC01 using crude glycerol and sodium nitrate as the sole substrate and nitrogen source, respectively, was investigated using two mineral culture media. Two inoculum sizes (5 and 10% v/v) and two volumes of the culture medium (50 and 100 mL) in 500 mL Erlenmeyer flask also were used. Enzymatic hydrolyses of waste office paper (WOP), newspaper (NP) and eucalyptus wood chips (EWC) were carried out using the biosurfactant from P. aeruginosa TGC01. The decrease in volume of the culture medium increased the production of rhamnolipid by 500%

In recent years, the production of microbial biosurfactants, increasingly used in various industries and agriculture, from low-cost renewable substrates is intensively studied. Large volumes of food waste, in particular waste cooking oil, are promising substrates for the production of biosurfactants on an industrial scale. However, studies on the ability of Rhodococcus bacteria, well-known biosurfactant producers, to grow on this substrate and the functional characteristics of synthesized biosurfactants are still scarce. In this study, the possibility of improving biosurfactant production by R

BACKGROUND: Oral biofilms are principal drivers of oral and dental diseases such as caries, periodontal disease, endodontic infections, and candidiasis. Conventional biocides can reduce microbial load but may irritate tissues and disturb oral homeostasis, limiting prolonged use. Biosurfactants represent a sustainable alternative strategy by modulating adhesion and biofilm structure rather than relying solely on direct bactericidal activity. Lipopeptide biosurfactants are particularly attractive due to their amphiphilic structure, surface activity, and reported antibiofilm properties. F7 is a c
