Comparative Biogeography of Marine and Terrestrial Microbes and Macrobiota Using Environmental DNA.

AbstractQuantifying how patterns of biodiversity and underlying processes vary across diverse environments and ecological communities is a long-standing challenge in biogeography. The logistics of sampling entire communities over different geographic scales has been a barrier to developing biogeographic theory and conceptual integration at large scales. Here, we use environmental DNA (eDNA) to overcome these challenges and examine biogeography hypotheses contrasting diversity in marine versus terrestrial realms and unicellular versus multicellular organisms. We found that eDNA revealed both no

Subsurface seawater methylmercury maximum explains biotic mercury concentrations in the Canadian Arctic.

Mercury (Hg) is a contaminant of major concern in Arctic marine ecosystems. Decades of Hg observations in marine biota from across the Canadian Arctic show generally higher concentrations in the west than in the east. Various hypotheses have attributed this longitudinal biotic Hg gradient to regional differences in atmospheric or terrestrial inputs of inorganic Hg, but it is methylmercury (MeHg) that accumulates and biomagnifies in marine biota. Here, we present high-resolution vertical profiles of total Hg and MeHg in seawater along a transect from the Canada Basin, across the Canadian Arctic

Bioaccumulation of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene by mussels transplanted in a coastal lagoon.

The bioaccumulation of two isomeric non-alternant non-priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene, was investigated in caged mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) exposed for 30 days in three sites of a coastal lagoon (Pialassa Baiona, Ravenna, Italy) contaminated by pyrogenic PAHs. The concentration of cyclopenta[cd]pyrene and benzo[ghi]fluoranthene increased from undetectable levels in reference mussels withdrawn from the Adriatic sea to 10-30 ng g(-1) dry weight in transplanted mussels. Other contaminants bioaccumulated by caged mus

Strong winds as driver of surf zooplankton abundance and composition in a temperate sandy beach.

This study explores the effect of different wind events (direction and duration) on the surf zone zooplankton community in a temperate sandy beach. Samplings were realized on the surf zone of Pehuen Co sandy beach during 17 wind events from May 17th, 2017, to July 19th, 2019. Biological samples were taken before and after the events. The identification of the events was realized using recorded high-frequency wind speed data. General Linear Model (LM) and Generalized linear models (GLM) were employed to compare physical and biological variables. We observed that the wind direction unequally alt

Biotic and abiotic soil properties influence survival of Listeria monocytogenes in soil.

Listeria monocytogenes is a food-borne pathogen responsible for the potentially fatal disease listeriosis and terrestrial ecosystems have been hypothesized to be its natural reservoir. Therefore, identifying the key edaphic factors that influence its survival in soil is critical. We measured the survival of L. monocytogenes in a set of 100 soil samples belonging to the French Soil Quality Monitoring Network. This soil collection is meant to be representative of the pedology and land use of the whole French territory. The population of L. monocytogenes in inoculated microcosms was enumerated by

Comparison of contaminants from different trophic levels and ecosystems.

The present paper provides an overview of the priority contaminants and media from the Greenland part of the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program. Levels and accumulation patterns of heavy metals, POPs and a radionuclide (137Cs) are compared from the terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Of the nine compounds presented, seven (Cd, Hg, Se, sigma PCB, sigma DDT, sigma HCH, HCB) increased in concentration towards higher trophic levels. For these contaminants the concentrations in soil and aquatic sediment were in the same order of magnitude, whereas the concentrations in marine biota

Distribution and bioaccumulation of POPs and mercury in the Ga-Selati River (South Africa) and the rivers Gudbrandsdalslågen and Rena (Norway).

Biomagnification of Hg and persistent organic pollutants (POPs: polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs)) in aquatic food chains can lead to high pollutant concentrations in top predators, including humans. Despite this threat to human health, research concerning bioaccumulation is still underrepresented in the southern hemisphere and in (sub)arctic and (sub)tropical areas, emphasizing the need for research in these locations. In this study, samples of water, sediment and aquatic biota were analyzed to determine concentrations o

A short review on environmental distribution and toxicity of the environmentally persistent free radicals.

Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals (EPFRs) are usually generated by the electron transfer of a certain radical precursor on the surface of a carrier. They are characterized with high activity, wide migration range, and relatively long half-life period. In this review, we summarized the literature on EPFRs published since 2010, including their environmental occurrence and potential cytotoxicity and biotoxicity. The EPFRs in the atmosphere are the most abundant in the environment, mainly generated from the combustion of raw materials or biochar, and the C-center types (quinones, semiquinon

Intestinal worms eating neuropsychiatric disorders? Apparently so.

A number of factors in Western society, including inflammatory diets, sedentary lifestyles, vitamin D deficiency and chronic psychological stress, are known to induce inflammation and to be associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. One factor that is emerging as a potential inflammation inducing factor is biota depletion, or loss of biodiversity from the ecosystem of the human body as a result of industrialization. Originally known as the "hygiene hypothesis", biota alteration theory describes the effects of biota alteration on the human immune system. Work on this topic has pinpointed deple

Factors controlling the bioaccumulation of mercury, methylmercury, arsenic, selenium, and cadmium by freshwater invertebrates and fish.

Concentrations of mercury (Hg), methylmercury (MMHg), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), and cadmium (Cd) were measured in atmospheric deposition, stream water, and biota in two streams in western Maryland. Overall, concentrations were slightly higher in the water of the lower pH Herrington Creek tributary (HRCT). Bioaccumulation factors were also higher for HRCT compared to Blacklick Run (BLK). MMHg concentrations in biota increased with trophic level and essentially all the Hg was as MMHg in predatory insects and insectivorous/carnivorous fish. Thus, the overall trophic status of the organism was

Accounting for Variability Across Years, Depths, and Non-Target Reads Improves Quantification of Root Community Composition in Plant Mixtures.

One key challenge in characterizing plant communities is determining the relative abundance of distinct species in root biomass. Metabarcoding is increasingly used to estimate a species' proportion in root mass based on its proportion in sample reads, but results have been mixed in accurately converting sequencing output to species mass in mixture. We created calibration mixtures from four focal plant species to determine how the association between a species' proportion in mass and its proportion in sequencing reads of the rbcL chloroplast gene varied across sample years, soil depth, and non-

Community assembly of the human piercing microbiome.

Predicting how biological communities respond to disturbance requires understanding the forces that govern their assembly. We propose using human skin piercings as a model system for studying community assembly after rapid environmental change. Local skin sterilization provides a 'clean slate' within the novel ecological niche created by the piercing. Stochastic assembly processes can dominate skin microbiomes due to the influence of environmental exposure on local dispersal, but deterministic processes might play a greater role within occluded skin piercings if piercing habitats impose strong

Assessment of flow ramping in water bodies impacted by hydropower operation in Norway - Is hydropower with environmental restrictions more sustainable?

Hydropower production is a key electricity generation technology in many parts of the world which can play a significant role in the transition towards a green and clean energy system. Hydropower can mobilize flexible energy on demand (hydropeaking) to balance out intermittent electricity from wind and photovoltaics. Adoption of hydropower as a peaking power source could lead to increased frequency of flow ramping in rivers downstream hydropower tailraces, which is one of the main stressors for riverine biota in alpine rivers. Both planned and accidental shutdowns of hydropower turbines need e

Plastic additives in the ocean: Use of a comprehensive dataset for meta-analysis and method development.

In excess of 13,000 chemicals are added to plastics ('additives') to improve performance, durability, and production of plastic products. They are categorized into numerous chemical classes including flame retardants, light stabilizers, antioxidants, and plasticizers. While research on plastic additives in the marine environment has increased over the past decade, there is a lack of methodological standardization. To direct future measurement of plastic additives, we compiled a first-of-its-kind dataset of literature assessing plastic additives in marine environments, delineated by sample type

Decadal differences in polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) concentrations in two seabird species in Arctic Canada.

Seabirds are exposed to a variety of environmental contaminants in the Arctic. While the persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of some groups of contaminants have been well-studied in seabirds since the 1970s, there is less known about polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). With increased vessel traffic, and potential oil and gas development in the Arctic region, there is a need to understand existing PAC exposure in biota against which to compare potential effects of anticipated increases of PACs in the marine region. Thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) and northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacia

Bioaccumulation, food web transfer, and tissue distribution of polonium-210 and lead-210 in Canadian freshwater ecosystems.

Understanding the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of naturally occurring radionuclides is essential for assessing ecological risk in freshwater systems. This study provides a large-scale assessment of polonium-210 (210Po) and lead-210 (210Pb) bioaccumulation, trophic transfer and tissue-specific biodistribution in freshwater food webs across Canada. Activity concentrations were measured in water and biota samples collected from multiple ecozones and land-use settings. Bioaccumulation factors were calculated to evaluate water-to-food web transfer, while trophic position patterns and 210Po:

Microplastic pollution in coastal ecosystem off Mumbai coast, India.

Microplastics (MPs) are anthropogenic pollutants which can adsorb toxic substances from surrounding water and absorb into the fish body. During the present study, MPs were observed in water, sediment, and gastrointestinal tracts of marine biota samples collected from the coastal waters of Mumbai, India. The mean abundances of MPs recorded in water samples 372 ± 143 items/liter and 9630 ± 2947 items/kg dry weight (DW) in sediment samples. The mean abundance of MPs in pelagic fish species varied from 6.74 ± 2.74 to 9.12 ± 3.57 items/individual and in the demersal species the values ranged from 5

Decoupling of cyanotoxin and mercury bioaccumulation peaks along browning and eutrophication gradients.

Many freshwater ecosystems are increasingly altered by browning (coloured dissolved organic matter enrichment) and eutrophication (phosphorus and nitrogen enrichment). Recently, Creed et al. (2018) proposed that these stressors will differentially modify microcystins (MC, produced by cyanobacteria) and methylmercury (MeHg, methylated by bacteria) production and bioaccumulation, with MC peaking under high nutrient, low browning conditions, while MeHg peaks at higher dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentrations. However, this prediction remains largely untested. To explore whether environmental

Uranium Isotope Evidence for Persistent Global Ocean Anoxia Across the Ediacaran-Cambrian Transition in Siberia.

The enigmatic Ediacara biota represents Earth's earliest example of macroscopic, complex life, yet the driving forces promoting their mid-Ediacaran evolution and subsequent extinction across the Ediacaran-Cambrian boundary remain speculative. If these were true animals requiring oxygen for aerobic respiration, their rise has often been linked to dramatic changes in the redox state of seawater. Their disappearance from the fossil record-whether gradual or abrupt-and replacement with Cambrian animals has similarly been linked to redox fluctuations, suggesting an environmental driver, or alternat
