The Relation Between Perceived Social Support, Treatment Adherence and Recovery Among Individuals Diagnosed With Bipolar Disorder.

INTRODUCTION: This cross-sectional descriptive study aims to examine the relationship between perceived social support, treatment adherence and recovery in individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The impact of social support elements, especially family, friend and special person support, on the treatment adherence and recovery are evaluated. METHODS: 105 individuals diagnosed with bipolar disorder participated in the study. Data were collected using the Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS), Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) and Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS).

Trends in bipolar disorder-related mortality in the United States, 1999-2023: A CDC WONDER database analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a class of mood disorders that poses a significant diagnostic challenge for clinicians. With its unknown etiology and the increasing disability burden it contributes to, BD necessitates further study to improve patient outcomes. Our study aimed to characterize the demographic trends in BD-related mortality using the CDC WONDER database. METHODS: The CDC WONDER database was utilized to collect data on the mortality burden from 1999 to 2023. Data was stratified by race or ethnicity, sex, age, rural or urban designation, and census region. Data analysis was p

Case Report: Menstrual cycle-related psychosis in bipolar I disorder, remitting with a combined oral contraceptive.

Menstrual cycle-related psychosis is a rare condition presenting with recurrent affective and psychotic symptoms temporally linked to the menstrual cycle. We report a case with two uncommon features: paradoxical relapse during antipsychotic-induced amenorrhea with hyperprolactinemia, and sustained remission after adjunctive hormonal stabilization using a combined oral contraceptive (drospirenone-ethinyl estradiol). Although phenomenology overlaps with bipolar disorder, the regular monthly periodicity and frequent premenstrual onset indicate a menstrual cycle-related substrate. Rigorous differe

Visual Event-Related Potentials under External Emotional Stimuli in Bipolar I Disorder with and without Hypersexuality.

Hypersexuality is related to functions of personality and emotion and is a salient symptom of bipolar I disorder especially during manic episode. However, it is uncertain whether bipolar I disorder with (BW) and without (BO) hypersexuality exhibits different cerebral activations under external emotion stimuli. In 54 healthy volunteers, 27 BW and 26 BO patients, we administered the visual oddball event-related potentials (ERPs) under external emotions of Disgust, Erotica, Fear, Happiness, Neutral, and Sadness. Participants' concurrent states of mania, hypomania, and depression were also evaluat

Sex difference in glia gene expression in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in bipolar disorder: Relation to psychotic features.

BACKGROUND: Suicide, psychotic features and gender influence the epidemiology and clinical prognosis of bipolar disorder (BD). Differences in glial function between the genders might contribute to these clinical variables. Here we studied expression of glial genes in human post-mortem prefrontal cortex of BD and control subjects in relation to suicide, psychotic features and sex. METHODS: Real time PCR was used to detect transcriptional alterations of 16 glia-related genes in two brain areas, the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), from 30 patients with

Higher cortisol levels may proceed a manic episode and are related to disease severity in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is implicated in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder (BD). However, the relationship between HPA-activity and disease severity is not fully elucidated. In this pilot study we aimed to explore the temporal relationship between HPA-activity and the risk of a manic episode in BD patients type I, by assessing long-term hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). Second, we explored the relation between HCC and the number of previous episodes. METHODS: Hair samples were collected from 45 BD I patients in euthymic or manic state and c

Serum agouti-related protein (AgRP) levels in bipolar disorder: Could AgRP be a state marker for mania?

Orexigenic and anorexigenic peptides, especially agouti-related protein (AgRP) and leptin, play important roles in the regulation of energy homeostasis in bipolar disorder. AgRP regulates energy metabolism by increasing appetite and decreasing energy expenditure. The resting energy expenditures of patients with manic bipolar disorder are higher than those of controls. Due to the effects of AgRP on energy expenditure and the increased physical activity of manic patients, we hypothesised that serum AgRP levels may be lower in manic patients than in euthymic patients and controls. There was a tot

Duration of untreated illness in first-treatment bipolar I disorder in relation to clinical outcome and cannabis use.

There is little knowledge about the role of the duration of untreated bipolar (DUB) illness in first-treatment bipolar disorder I (BD I), its association with symptoms at start of first treatment, and development over the first year, and limited knowledge about factors that influence the length of DUB. Substance use has shown to delay identification of primary psychiatric disorders, and while cannabis use is common in BD the role of cannabis in relationship to DUB is unclear. The aim of the present study is to examine the associations between DUB and key clinical outcomes at baseline in BD I,

Natural speech comprehension in bipolar disorders: an event-related brain potential study among manic patients.

BACKGROUND: Thought and language disturbances are crucial clinical features in Bipolar Disorders (BD), and constitute a fundamental basis for social cognition. In BD, clinical manifestations such as disorganization and formal thought disorders may play a role in communication disturbances. However, only few studies have explored language disturbances in BD at a neurophysiological level. Two main Event-Related brain Potentials (ERPs) have been used in language comprehension research: the N400 component, elicited by incongruous word with the preceding semantic context, and the Late Positive Comp

Assessment of serum macro and trace element homeostasis and the complexity of inter-element relations in bipolar mood disorders.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorders are complex neuropsychiatric in nature and are clinically classified as Type I, Type II, and Type V. The etiological factors include environmental-genetic inter-relations. Trace metals play a significant role in neurological disorders. There is very limited information on the role of macro and trace elements in bipolar disorders. METHODS: Trace elements namely Na, K, S, Ca, Mg, P, Cu, Fe, Zn, Mn and Al were analyzed in serum samples of 3 bipolar types: bipolar I, bipolar II and bipolar V with a control group using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectr

Treatment-related changes in functional connectivity of anterior cingulate cortex subregions and their genetic associations in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by abnormalities in large-scale brain networks, yet subregional functional alterations of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), their treatment-related changes, and underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was acquired from 82 patients with BD and 88 healthy controls (HCs). A subset of patients (n = 38) completed a three-month longitudinal follow-up after pharmacological treatment. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) analyses were conducted using anatomically def

Parallels between bipolar disorder and ATP1A3-related diseases: a window into the investigation of lithium for alternating hemiplegia of childhood.

BACKGROUND: Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC) shares many aspects with the psychiatric condition, bipolar disorder. BODY: AHC is a heterogeneous genetic disorder that can manifest in various fashions but will usually involve paroxysmal neuropsychiatric symptoms that are precipitated by environmental events or stressors, superimposed over developmental abnormalities of various severities. It occurs as a consequence of a variety of mutations of the alpha3 subunit of the sodium pump (ATP1A3). Treatment is generally symptomatic with flunarizine a nonselective calcium channel blocker, but o

Longitudinal stability of mood-related resting-state networks in youth with symptomatic bipolar-I/II disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is characterized by temporal instability of mood and energy, but the neural correlates of this instability are poorly understood. In previous cross-sectional studies, mood state in BD has been associated with differential functional connectivity (FC) amongst several subcortical regions and ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Here, we assess whether BD is associated with longitudinal instability within this mood-related network of interest (NOI). Young people with BD-I/II were scanned 4-6 times and healthy controls (HC) were scanned 4 times over 9 months. Following preprocessi

Association of grey matter cerebral blood flow with white matter integrity in relation to youth bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Both cerebral blood flow (CBF) and fractional anisotropy (FA) are altered in bipolar disorder (BD). We sought to investigate the unexplored CBF-FA association in relation to youth BD. METHODS: We recruited youth with BD, high-risk youth with a family history of BD, and healthy controls. Using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging, we measured global and regional grey matter CBF using arterial spin labelling and we measured regional FA using diffusion tensor imaging. We explored the CBF-FA association across groups, between groups, and by sex. Analyses of the BD group further examined moo

Disease progression in bipolar disorder in relation to white matter microstructure: A comprehensive approach based on staging models.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is assumed to follow a progressive course, conceptualized through staging models. It is unclear whether white matter (WM) microstructure abnormalities, central to BD pathophysiology, parallel this development throughout disease progression. This study explored the link between WM and disease progression in BD, using a comprehensive approach based on clinical staging models. METHODS: This cross-sectional diffusion tensor-imaging study included 153 BD patients and 153 healthy controls (HCs) matched for age, sex, and study site. Using tract-based spatial statist

State- and trait-related dysfunctions in bipolar disorder across different mood states: a graph theory study.

BACKGROUND: The interplay between state- and trait-related disruptions in structural networks remains unclear in bipolar disorder (BD), but graph theory can offer insights into global and local network changes. We sought to use diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) and graph theory approaches to analyze structural topological properties across distinct mood states and identify high-risk individuals by examining state- and trait-related impairments in BD. METHODS: We studied changes in white matter network among patients with BD and healthy controls, exploring relationships with clinical variables. S
