Etiology of atopy in infancy: the KOALA Birth Cohort Study.

The aim of the KOALA Birth Cohort Study in the Netherlands is to identify factors that influence the clinical expression of atopic disease with a main focus on lifestyle (e.g., anthroposophy, vaccinations, antibiotics, dietary habits, breastfeeding and breast milk composition, intestinal microflora composition, infections during the first year of life, and gene-environment interaction). The recruitment of pregnant women started in October 2000. First, participants with 'conventional lifestyles' (n = 2343) were retrieved from an ongoing prospective cohort study (n = 7020) on pregnancy-related p

The Danish Twin Registry: 127 birth cohorts of twins.

The Danish Twin Registry is the oldest national twin register in the world, initiated in 1954 by ascertainment of twins born from 1870 to 1910. During a number of studies birth cohorts have been added to the register, and by the recent addition of birth cohorts from 1931 to 1952 the Registry now comprizes 127 birth cohorts of twins from 1870 to 1996, with a total of more than 65,000 twin pairs included. In all cohorts the ascertainment has been population-based and independent of the traits studied, although different procedures of ascertainment have been employed. In the oldest cohorts only t

Incidence and Remission of Atopic Dermatitis in a German Birth Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Patterns of incidence and factors associated with remission of atopic dermatitis (AD) from birth to adulthood remain understudied. OBJECTIVES: To examine incidence of AD, its remission probability and trajectories, and early-life factors associated with it in a prospective study from birth to 30 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from the population-based Multicenter Allergy Study (MAS), which recruited full-term newborns from 5 German cities in 1990. Generally healthy newborns were enrolled; the sample was slightly enriched for allergy risk, wi

Air Pollution Exposure and Birth Weight in the ECHO Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Prior studies report negative associations between prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (ie, aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µg; PM2.5) and birth weight, but have typically averaged exposure across pregnancy, which may not reveal windows of susceptibility. OBJECTIVE: To identify windows of prenatal susceptibility to PM2.5. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective analysis of a prospectively enrolled cohort study. Participants were enrolled at 1 of 50 sites participating in the US Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes Cohort. The study included ful

Determinants of Infant Growth in a Birth Cohort in the Nepal Plains.

This study aimed to identify the determinants of infant growth in terms of length-for-age z-score (LAZ) in a birth cohort (n = 602) in the plains of Nepal. Children were enrolled within 72 h of birth and followed-up every 28 days until they were 2 years. We fitted mixed-effects linear regression models controlling for multiple measurements within individuals to examine the impact of household and maternal factors, feeding practices and infection on infant LAZ. We conducted separate analyses for the age periods 0-6 months (exclusive breastfeeding period) and 7-24 months (complementary feeding p

Thymus assessments at birth in echocardiography: a preliminary cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Echocardiography is a tool used in neonatal period to screen for congenital heart defects and to assess the function of the cardiovascular system. It enables obtaining a three-vessel view (3VV) to show how the superior vena cava, the aorta and the pulmonary trunk relate to each other. A 3VV also provides a view of the thymus gland. METHODS: It is a preliminary study. Using the thymus measurements obtained in echocardiography of neonates delivered in one healthcare centre, a total of 1,331 thymus records were collected and statistically analysed. The study was conducted on group of

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in a Military Hospital Birth Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) are risk factors for maternal and fetal complications with long-term sequelae for mother and children. HDP are not clearly understood; however, there appears to be a relationship with maternal weight gain. The effects of maternal weight gain and pregnancy outcomes, including HDP, are understudied. Few studies have assessed maternal weight gain in service-connected women and its effects on HDP. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between blood pressure and birth outcomes in women who delivered their infants at a military hospital.

A century of sexual abuse victimisation: A birth cohort analysis.

This study examined changes in the reported prevalence of adult and child sexual abuse over the last century and explored how changes in social and political circumstances may have affected rates. Data from two population-based face-to-face surveys conducted in New Zealand (samples of 2855 women in 2003 and 1464 women in 2019) were used to produce birth cohort prevalence estimates of three forms of sexual abuse including by an intimate partner (lifetime and 12-month), by non-partners, and child sexual abuse. A timeline of major population influences that might be associated with violence occur

Anxiety, depression, and birth outcomes in a cohort of unmedicated women.

BACKGROUND: Even though most of the systematic reviews suggest that depression and anxiety are related to poor neonatal outcomes, it is not yet clear whether a dose-response effect exists. AIM: The aim of the present study is to evaluate the amount of depressive and anxiety symptoms in a cohort of pregnant women and its effect on their newborns. METHODS: Two hundred ninety-nine women were assessed for anxiety and depressive disorders and anxious and depressive symptoms at near monthly intervals throughout pregnancy. At the time of delivery, we collected the newborns' gestational age, birth w

Natural History of Cryptosporidiosis in a Birth Cohort in Southern India.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of moderate to severe childhood diarrhea in resource-poor settings. Understanding the natural history of cryptosporidiosis and the correlates of protection are essential to develop effective and sustainable approaches to disease control and prevention. METHODS: Children (N = 497) were recruited at birth in semiurban slums in Vellore, India, and followed for 3 years with twice-weekly home visits. Stool samples were collected every 2 weeks and during diarrheal episodes were tested for Cryptosporidium species by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Seru

Piccolipiù, a multicenter birth cohort in Italy: protocol of the study.

BACKGROUND: The fetal and infant life are periods of rapid development, characterized by high susceptibility to exposures. Birth cohorts provide unique opportunities to study early-life exposures in association with child development and health, as well as, with longer follow-up, the early life origin of adult diseases. Piccolipiù is an Italian birth cohort recently set up to investigate the effects of environmental exposures, parental conditions and social factors acting during pre-natal and early post-natal life on infant and child health and development. We describe here its main characteri

Smoking and psychopathology increasingly associated in recent birth cohorts.

BACKGROUND: In recent decades, smoking has become an increasingly non-normative behavior. Because deviant behaviors are associated with greater clinical and genetic risks, current-generation smokers may have greater concentrations of psychiatric comorbidity than previous generations. We examined this question empirically by testing whether associations between measures of smoking, psychiatric diagnoses, and risk-associated personality traits, increased across seven birth-cohorts of the 20th century. METHOD: 4326 subjects from a cross-sectional NIMH control sample were categorized into one of

Season of birth in a nationwide cohort of coeliac disease patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Genetic factors alone cannot explain the risk of developing coeliac disease (CD). Children born in summer months are likely to be weaned and introduced to gluten during winter when viral infections are more frequent. Earlier studies on birth season and CD are limited in sample size and results are contradictory. METHOD: Case-control study. We used biopsy reports from all 28 Swedish pathology departments to identify individuals with CD, defined as small intestinal villous atrophy (n=29 096). The government agency Statistics Sweden then identified 144 522 controls matc

The multinational birth cohort of EuroPrevall: background, aims and methods.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The true prevalence and risk factors of food allergies in children are not known because estimates were based predominantly on subjective assessments and skin or serum tests of allergic sensitization to food. The diagnostic gold standard, a double-blind placebo-controlled food provocation test, was not performed consistently to confirm suspected allergic reactions in previous population studies in children. This protocol describes the specific aims and diagnostic protocol of a birth cohort study examining prevalence patterns and influential factors of confirmed food allergies i

Metabolic Signature of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and Risk of Adverse Birth Outcomes: A Prospective Birth Cohort Study.

UNLABELLED: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a heterogeneous condition diagnosed solely through glucose. It is characterized by profound perturbations in the metabolome, with specific metabolic profiles linked to adverse birth outcomes. Metabolomics can reveal population heterogeneity in health and disease. Here, we used nontargeted metabolomics to systematically profile the circulating metabolome in 2,050 pregnant women during midpregnancy, identifying 30 metabolites that define the GDM metabolic signature (mGDM). Participants were stratified into four groups by distinct glycemic and me

Associations of Prenatal BTEX Exposure with Preterm Birth: A Nationwide Birth Cohort Study in 337 Chinese Cities.

Long-term exposure to benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) has been linked to preterm birth (PTB), yet evidence from China remains limited. This study included 4,321,599 live singleton births from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project between 2010 and 2015. Prenatal BTEX exposure was estimated using a chemistry-climate model. Multivariate linear regression and logistic regression models were applied to examine associations of BTEX exposure with gestational age and PTB risk, respectively. For the entire pregnancy, each interquartile range (IQR, 11.6 μg/m3) incr

Maternal occupational exposures during early stages of pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes in the NINFEA birth-cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal occupational exposures during early pregnancy can be detrimental to foetus health and have short- and long-term health effects on the child. This study examined their association with adverse birth outcomes. METHODS: The study included 3938 nulliparous women from the Italian NINFEA mother-child cohort. Their occupational exposures during the first trimester of pregnancy were assessed through prospectively collected questionnaire information and job-exposure matrices. Associations between maternal exposures and birthweight, preterm birth, and delivery by caesarean section

Interaction between maternal thyroid hormone levels and pregnancy-related anxiety on birth outcomes-A birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal thyroid hormone levels and pregnancy-related anxiety (PRA) influence pregnancy outcomes. However, their potential interactive effects on birth outcomes remain poorly understood. METHODS: This large prospective cohort study was conducted from May 2013 to September 2014 at the Ma'an Shan Maternal and Child Health Center. A total of 1798 mother-infant pairs from the Ma'an Shan Birth Cohort (MABC) participated. PRA assessments and thyroid hormone level tests were performed during the first trimester (1-13 weeks), second trimester (14-27 weeks), and third trimester (after 28 w
