PURPOSE: One-third of all pregnancies in the United States are conceived within 18 months of a prior live birth. Preventing unintended pregnancies may help to decrease the prevalence of pregnancies with these short interpregnancy intervals. However, data on factors associated with pregnancy intention among women who have had short birth intervals are sparse. Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data were used to further evaluate these associations.
METHODS: Because only Mississippi and Tennessee Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System include a survey question about birth interval

BACKGROUND: Interpregnancy interval (IPI) has been linked with several maternal and neonatal adverse events in the general population. However, the association between IPI and maternal and neonatal outcomes in women whose first delivery was by cesarean delivery is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between IPI after cesarean delivery and the risk of maternal and neonatal adverse events.
METHODS: Women (aged ≥ 18 years) whose first delivery was cesarean delivery with 2 consecutive singleton pregnancies from the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) database between 2017 and 201

OBJECTIVE: Short interpregnancy interval (IPI), <18 months between pregnancies, is a potential cause of adverse delivery and birth outcomes, and may be a particular issue among those with other risks. Our goal was to examine IPI and delivery/infant complications in Tennessee.
METHODS: Birth certificate/vital records data included 101,912 women with a previous delivery. IPI groups (<6, 6-12, 12-18, 18-60 months) were compared on outcomes.
RESULTS: Thirty-nine percent of the deliveries had IPI <18 months, 9% were <6 months, rates 11% and 27% higher than nationally. Women with IPI <18 months we

INTRODUCTION: Short interpregnancy interval is defined as conception occurring within 18 months of a previous live birth. Studies show increased risks of preterm birth, low birth weight, and small for gestational age with short interpregnancy intervals; however, it is unclear if these risks are higher for all short interpregnancy intervals or only for those less than 6 months. The objective of this study was to evaluate prevalence of adverse pregnancy outcomes among people with short interpregnancy intervals, stratified by degree: less than 6 months, 6 to 11 months, and 12 to 17 months.

INTRODUCTION: We studied changes in placental weight from the first to the second delivery according to length of the inter-pregnancy interval.
METHODS: We followed all women in Norway from their first to their second successive singleton pregnancy during the years 1999-2019, a total of 271 184 women. We used data from the Medical Birth Registry of Norway and studied changes in placental weight (in grams (g)) according to the length of the inter-pregnancy. Adjustments were made for year and maternal age at first delivery, changes in the prevalence of maternal diseases (hypertension and diabet

BACKGROUND: Inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) is the elapse of time between the end of one pregnancy and the conception of another pregnancy, while birth to pregnancy interval, is the time gap between live birth and the conception of the next pregnancy. Hence, this study assessed the effects of short inter-pregnancy intervals on perinatal outcomes among women who gave birth in public health institutions of Assosa zone, North-west Ethiopia.
METHODS: An institution-based prospective cohort study was conducted among 456 mothers who visited health facilities for the fourth antenatal care appointment

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of the interpregnancy interval (IPI) after cesarean delivery on the risks of adverse perinatal events during subsequent pregnancies.
METHODS: We retrospectively examined perinatal outcomes of subsequent pregnancies of women whose most recent birth experience involved cesarean delivery at our hospital between January 2014 and December 2019. IPI was defined as the time between live birth and subsequent conception. Three IPI groups: < 18 months, 18-60 months, and > 60 months, were assessed. The risks of preterm birth, preeclampsia, placenta previa, placental abrupti

BACKGROUND: Interpregnancy interval (IPI) is associated with a variety of adverse maternal and infant outcomes. However, reports of its associations with early infant neurodevelopment are limited and the mechanisms of this association have not been elucidated. Maternal-fetal glucose metabolism has been shown to be associated with infant neurodevelopmental. The objective of this study was to determine whether this metabolism plays a role in the relationship between IPI and neurodevelopment.
METHODS: This prospective birth cohort study included 2599 mother-infant pairs. The IPI was calculated b

The objective of the study was to explore the association between birth spacing and risk of adverse maternal outcomes. The study was a systematic review of observational studies that examined the relationship between interpregnancy or birth intervals and adverse maternal outcomes. Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Overall, long interpregnancy intervals, possibly longer than 5 years, are independently associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia. There is emerging evidence that women with long interpregnancy intervals are at increased risk for labor dystocia and that short int

Preterm premature rupture of membranes is one of the causes of premature birth and perinatal deaths, particularly in developing countries due to poor access and availability of medical resources to manage and sustain the pregnancy to term. Although, several risk factors for preterm premature rupture of membranes were identified, its association with inter-pregnancy interval was understudied. Therefore, we aimed to assess the incidence of preterm premature rupture of membranes and its association with inter-pregnancy interval in urban South Ethiopia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether participation in CenteringPregnancy group prenatal care is associated with decreased risk of an interpregnancy interval (IPI) ≤6 months.
STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of women enrolled in Missouri Medicaid from 2007 to 2014 using maternal Medicaid data linked to infant birth certificate records. Inclusion criteria were women ≥11 years old, ≥1 viable singleton delivery during the study period, residency in St. Louis city or county, and ≥2 prenatal visits. The primary outcome was an IPI ≤6 months. Secondary outcomes included IPI ≤12 month

INTRODUCTION: Interpregnancy interval (IPI) is defined as the period between a live birth and the conception of a subsequent fetus. Both short (IPI < 6 months) and long IPI (IPI > 60 months) have been shown to increase the risk for adverse perinatal outcomes, some of which, are known risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) in the offspring.
AIMS: To study the association between IPI and risk for offspring OSAS, during a follow-up period of up to 18 years.
STUDY DESIGN: Population-based cohort.
SUBJECTS: In this population-based cohort analysis, all singleton live births, bo

There is no generally accepted explanation for the excess risk of adverse pregnancy outcome after short interpregnancy intervals. In this paper, we present a hypothesis that is both biologically plausible, empirically testable, and able to explain many observations. Maternal serum and erythrocyte concentrations of folate decrease from the fifth month of pregnancy onwards and remain low for a fairly long time after delivery. Women who become pregnant before folate restoration is complete have a raised risk of folate insufficiency at the time of conception and during pregnancy. As a consequence,

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to describe the occurrence of spontaneous version in twins in the third trimester, as well as the correlation between antepartum and birth presentation.
METHODS: Twin pregnancies were divided into four gestational age intervals: 20-23; 24-27; 28-31; and 32-36 weeks. Fetal presentation was categorized as cephalic (C) or non-cephalic (NC). Hospital records were reviewed to determine demographic factors, including mode of conception. Chi-square was used to compare distributions of presentations, and Cramer's V measure of association was used to correlate prese

BACKGROUND: Available information remains limited on inter-pregnancy interval (IPI) and its effect on maternal health and pregnancy outcome.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effect of IPI on maternal serum ferritin, haematocrit and pregnancy outcome.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 316 women categorized into WHO recommended IPI of ≥24 months (group I) and IPI <24 months i.e. short IPI (SIPI) as group II after matching for gestational age and social status. Serum ferritin and haematocrit levels were assayed in first and second trimesters; primary outcome measures were materna

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine if single year birth certificate data can be used to identify regional and hospital variation in rates of short interpregnancy interval (IPI < 6 months).
STUDY DESIGN: IPI was estimated for multiparous women ages 15 to 44 years with singleton live births between 2015 and 2016. Perinatal outcomes, place of birth, maternal race, and data for IPI calculations were obtained by using birth certificates. IPI frequencies are presented as observed rates.
RESULTS: The cohort included 562,039 multiparous women. Short IPI rates were similar to those obtained with
