Vipers of Major clinical relevance in Europe: Taxonomy, venom composition, toxicology and clinical management of human bites.

Snakebites in Europe are mostly due to bites from Viperidae species of the genus Vipera. This represents a neglected public health hazard with poorly defined incidence, morbidity and mortality. In Europe, fourteen species of "true vipers" (subfamily Viperinae) are present, eleven of which belong to the genus Vipera. Amongst these, the main medically relevant species due to their greater diffusion across Europe and the highest number of registered snakebites are six, namely: Vipera ammodytes, V. aspis, V. berus, V. latastei, V. seoanei and V. ursinii. Generally speaking, viper venom composition

Linking human tick bite risk with tick abundance in the environment: A novel approach to quantify tick bite risk using orienteers in Scotland.

The rate that people are bitten by ticks is critical in determining the risk of tick-borne infections but is rarely quantified accurately. Often tick abundance in the environment is used as a proxy for tick bite risk, but the relationship with risk is poorly understood. We used a novel citizen science approach to measure tick bite rate in orienteers, to assess the relationship between tick abundance and tick bite risk and to identify risk factors for tick bites. Eleven orienteering events were attended in Scotland between August 2018 and September 2019. The number of tick bites in orienteers,

Isolation of Lancefieldella parvula in Secondary Infection from Human Bite: A Rare Occurrence.

BACKGROUND: Human bite infections most commonly manifest as skin and soft tissue infections with lower infection rates than animal bites. Lancefieldella parvula is an anaerobe Gram-positive coccus found in human oral mucosa. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 28-year-old healthy woman who suffered a deep skin and soft tissue infection in the left hand after a human bite. She presented with signs and symptoms of infection unresponsive to antibiotics, requiring admission for surgical debridement. Microbiological cultures were taken from the wound and empirical treatment was initiated w

Human tick biting and tick-borne disease risk in Türkiye: Systematic review.

Ticks serve as significant vectors for over 100 pathogens, many of which pose serious health risks to humans. Türkiye's diverse tick species and ideal ecological conditions facilitate their proliferation. Following the emergence of the Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) epidemic in 2004, tick-borne diseases have become a critical public health concern. This systematic review was conducted to identify the dominant tick genera and species responsible for human bites and tick-borne diseases. PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, Medline, Tübitak TR Dizin, Dergi Park databases were searche

Temporoparietal Fascia Sandwich Technique in the Immediate Reconstruction of Human Bite Ear Amputation.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic ear amputation is a rare injury. Ear replantation is the gold standard in dealing with amputated ears. However, this is not always feasible. In this case series, the authors discuss the immediate reconstruction of traumatic ear amputation using temporoparietal fascia with the same skin from the amputated ear, which provided a high esthetic result and patient satisfaction. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The authors present a case series of 3 patients from July 2018 to May 2020 who suffered from traumatic ear amputation due to a human bite and were successfully reconstructed using

Immune response profiles from humans experimentally exposed to Phlebotomus duboscqi bites.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease prevalent in 92 countries with approximately one million new infections annually. Interactions between vector saliva and the human host alter the response to infection and outcome of disease. METHODS: To characterize the human immunological responses developed against saliva of Phlebotomus duboscqi, a Leishmania major (L. major) vector, we repeatedly exposed the arms of 14 healthy U.S volunteers to uninfected P. duboscqi bites. Blood was collected a week after each exposure and used to assess total IgG antibod

Stemming the Rising Tide of Human-Biting Ticks and Tickborne Diseases, United States.

Ticks and tickborne diseases are increasingly problematic. There have been positive developments that should result in improved strategies and better tools to suppress ticks, reduce human tick bites, and roll back tickborne diseases. However, we equally need to address the question of who is responsible for implementing the solutions. The current model of individual responsibility for tick control evolved from a scenario in the 1990s focusing strongly on exposure to blacklegged ticks and Lyme disease spirochetes in peridomestic settings of the northeastern United States. Today, the threat pose

Effects of Chronic and Experimental Acute Masseter Pain on Precision Biting Behavior in Humans.

Chronic pain in the orofacial region is common worldwide. Pain seems to affect the jaw motor control. Hence, temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are often accompanied by pain upon chewing, restricted mouth opening and impaired maximal bite forces. However, little is known on the effects of pain, in particular the effects of chronic jaw muscle pain on precision biting. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of chronic and acute jaw muscle pain on oral motor control during precision biting in humans. Eighteen patients with chronic masseter muscle pain and 18 healthy participants comple

Human-Biting Ixodes Ticks and Pathogen Prevalence from California, Oregon, and Washington.

From July 2006 through August 2017, a passive surveillance study of Ixodes ticks submitted from California, Oregon, and Washington was conducted by the TickReport program at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. In total, 549 human-biting Ixodes ticks were submitted comprising both endemic and nonendemic species. We found that 430 endemic ticks were from 3 Ixodes species: Ixodes pacificus, Ixodes spinipalpis, and Ixodes angustus, whereas Ixodes scapularis (n = 111) was the most common species among the 119 nonendemic ticks. The submission peak for nymphal I. pacificus and I. spinipalpis wa

Rat-bite fever due to Streptobacillus notomytis isolated from a human specimen.

Rat-bite fever (RBF) is a disease that usually presents with fever, arthralgia and skin rash. Streptobacillus moniliformis was considered the main cause of RBF among the genus Streptobacillus. Although with similar clinical presentation, RBF due to Streptobacillus notomytis is unusual in humans. To the best of our knowledge, we present a case involving the first isolate of S. notomytis in humans. A 63-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with fever, rash and polyarthritis. She recalled being bitten by a rat on her finger 5 days before presentation. Clinical manifestations were compatibl

Spontaneous rat bite fever in non-human primates: a review of two cases.

Rat bite fever is a worldwide zoonotic, non-reportable disease. This entity encompasses similar, yet distinct, disease syndromes caused by Streptobacillus moniliformis or Spirillum minus. Naturally occurring rat bite fever has not been previously described in non-human primates. This report describes two cases of non-human primate rat bite fever caused by S. moniliformis; a rhesus macaque (Macaca mullata) with valvular endocarditis, and a titi monkey (Callicebus sp.) with septic arthritis. Potential sources of infection included direct contact, and ingestion of surface water or feed contaminat

Humans vary in their ability to elicit biting responses from Simulium venustum (Diptera:Simuliidae).

Human subjects were exposed to Simulium venustum (sensu lato) to determine whether biting rates differed among individuals. Tests with S. venustum collected from a CO2-baited target demonstrated that one subject was consistently bitten more often than another. For each individual, biting increased with the differential between skin and ambient temperature. Latex rubber membranes that had been worn against the skin of subjects and then stretched onto a warned aluminum block were always bitten less often than control membranes. Results lend credibility to popular notions that some people are bit

Human snake bite victims: the successful detection of circulating snake venom by radiommunoassay,

A new solid-phase radioimmunoassay has been developed which allows positive identification of the type of snake venom in human tissue and fluids and its accurate quantitation. Tiger snake venom at a level of 210 ng/ml was detected post mortem in the serum of a child, and brown snake venom was detected in two adults bitten by unidentified snakes. Apart from forensic applications, the assay will be useful in studying clinical aspects of envenomation and the use of antivenenes.

Characterization of human exposure to Anopheles and Aedes bites using antibody-based biomarkers in rural zone of Cameroon.

Malaria and Aedes-borne diseases remain major causes of mortality, morbidity, and disability in most developing countries. Surveillance of transmission patterns associated with vector control remains strategic for combating these diseases. Due to the limitions of current surveillance tools used to assess human exposure to mosquito bites, human antibody (Ab) responses to salivary peptides from Anopheles (gSG6-P1) and Aedes (Nterm-34kDa) are increasingly being used to measure direct human-Anopheles or Aedes contact. This study reports on the assessment of Human IgG Ab responses to gSG6-P1 and Nt

Three-dimensional imaging of human cutaneous forearm bite marks in human volunteers over a 4 day period.

INTRODUCTION: Human bite marks are often sustained during sexual, domestic or child abuse. Currently, analysis of these marks involves digital photography techniques along with an expert forensic odontologist opinion. Photographs often focus closely on the bite mark and give little context to the anatomical location of the injury. Due to variation in camera models and expertise of the photographer, photograph quality can affect its interpretation. Additionally, it can sometimes be days between injury and examination, allowing the injury pattern and colour to alter, making it harder to analyse.

Unexpectedly aggressive human-biting behaviour of Hippobosca equina Linnaeus (Diptera: Hippoboscidae).

We report the first confirmed case of a human being bitten by the parasitic forest fly Hippobosca equina (Diptera: Hippoboscidae) Linnaeus, in Slovakia. The incident involved atypically aggressive behaviour of the fly toward the human host and suggests a potentially underestimated health risk for humans. A single specimen of H. equina responsible for the bite was identified and subjected to molecular analyses to assess the presence of zoonotic pathogens. DNA of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (Hyphomicrobiales: Bartonellaceae) Dehio et al. was detected in the collected specimen. This case demonstra
