Continuous versus multiple rapid infusions of indomethacin: effects on cerebral blood flow velocity.

OBJECTIVE: Therapeutic administration of indomethacin for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure has been documented to decrease cerebral blood flow velocity which may be harmful to the vulnerable premature neonate. We have therefore compared the effects of administering indomethacin by rapid injection versus slow, continuous indomethacin infusion at the same total therapeutic dose on middle cerebral artery (MCA) systolic and diastolic flow velocity, resistance index, and cerebral blood flow (as reflected by the integrated area under the curve). METHODS: Premature neonates (< 1750 g) document

[Intra-individual variation of cerebral blood flow velocity in sleeping and awake children].

A considerable intraindividual variability of blood flow velocities in the middle and posterior cerebral artery was found in 74 children by continuous transcranial Doppler recording during EEG registration. The coefficient of variation of the mean flow velocities in the posterior cerebral artery was higher than in the middle cerebral artery, and higher in restless children than in calm children. During hyperventilation the mean flow velocities decreased to about 50 per cent of the baseline values. They increased to 130-140 per cent of the baseline values after hyperventilation. Repeated variat

Effect of indomethacin on superior mesenteric artery blood flow velocity in preterm infants.

In 15 preterm infants with symptomatic patent ductus arteriosus, blood flow velocity changes in the superior mesenteric artery were investigated with Doppler ultrasound just before and during the first 12 hours after a single dose of indomethacin. Indomethacin administration led to an instantaneous decrease in all infants of temporal mean flow velocity in the superior mesenteric artery, which was maximal 10 minutes after administration of indomethacin, followed by a more sustained recovery, slightly greater than baseline values, 12 hours after indomethacin treatment. Simultaneously determined

Pulsed Doppler ultrasound for measuring blood flow velocity in the human ophthalmic circulation.

This study was performed in order to develop a method for studying blood flow in the ophthalmic circulation. Using a pulsed doppler system utilizing an ultrasonic frequency of 10 MHz, blood flow velocities have been measured in the ophthalmic artery and in the arteries behind the eyeball (lateral posterior ciliary arteries) in 40 normal subjects. The mean of the peak systolic velocities were 34 +/- 6 cm/s in the ophthalmic artery, and 14 +/- 3 cm/s in the lateral posterior ciliary arteries. We conclude that blood flow velocities can be measured in defined vessel areas in the orbit.

Transcranial doppler assessment of preoperative cerebral blood flow velocity in cardiac surgery patients.

Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and multifactorial complication following cardiac surgery, with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) playing a significant contributory role. Impaired cerebral autoregulation (CA) during CPB, particularly in older patients, may lead to cerebral hypo- or hyperperfusion. While several methods exist to assess CA and cerebral blood flow, many require specialized equipment not widely available. This prospective observational study aimed to investigate whether altered cerebral artery flow velocity, measured preoperatively by transcranial Doppler (TCD), is associated

Blood Flow Velocity: a Decision Tool for Stenting Indication in Venous Pulsatile Tinnitus.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lateral sinus stenosis is the most common cause of venous pulsatile tinnitus (VPT). Stenting is an effective treatment after demonstration of a trans-stenotic pressure gradient; however, pressure measurement has many technical limitations. In 2018, a study showed that a combined approach with intravascular velocity measurement could be effective in identifying most appropriate candidates for stenting. The aim of the present study was to evaluate a new strategy using this biomarker for the indication of stenting even without a significant pressure gradient. MATERIAL AND

Altered cerebral blood flow velocity features in fibromyalgia patients in resting-state conditions.

The aim of this study is to characterize in resting-state conditions the cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) signals of fibromyalgia patients. The anterior and middle cerebral arteries of both hemispheres from 15 women with fibromyalgia and 15 healthy women were monitored using Transcranial Doppler (TCD) during a 5-minute eyes-closed resting period. Several signal processing methods based on time, information theory, frequency and time-frequency analyses were used in order to extract different features to characterize the CBFV signals in the different vessels. Main results indicated that, in c

Cerebral blood flow velocity response to magnesium sulfate in patients after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Magnesium sulfate therapy, standard in preventing seizures in preeclampsia, is under active investigation as a neuroprotective agent. The authors studied the effect of magnesium as a cerebral vasodilator by measuring the cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) response to a 5g intravenous bolus of MgSO4 compared with a saline placebo after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) was measured after each infusion. Patients were studied up to three times after SAH at prescribed time intervals. Fourteen patients (11 women, 3 men; mean age

Caffeine withdrawal increases cerebral blood flow velocity and alters quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) activity.

RATIONALE: Cessation of daily caffeine consumption produces a withdrawal syndrome comprised of subjective symptoms and functional impairment. Few controlled studies have examined the physiological effects of caffeine withdrawal. OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the effect of caffeine withdrawal on cerebral blood flow velocity and quantitative EEG. METHODS: Ten volunteers reporting moderate caffeine intake (mean 333 mg/day) participated in this double-blind study. Subjects completed several tests when maintaining their normal diet (baseline period) and during two 1-day periods during whi

Cerebral blood flow velocity during occlusive manipulation of patent ductus arteriosus in children.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) with left-to-right shunting modifies the Doppler flow pattern of the intracranial circulation. The ability of increases in cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) to predict shunt resolution during PDA occlusion was evaluated. A 2 MHz transcranial Doppler (TCD) monitored diastolic and mean CBFV, plus the systolic/mean CBFV ratio in the middle cerebral artery from before (baseline) to immediately after PDA occlusion. Shunt resolution was verified by echocardiography and/or angiography. A minimum of 40% increase in diastolic-CBFV from baseline was considered successful

Hemispheric asymmetry of arterial blood flow velocity changes during verbal and visuospatial tasks.

Changes in arterial blood flow velocity induced by cognitive activity were measured by simultaneous bilateral transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD) of the posterior and the middle cerebral artery. The finding of a robust left hemisphere dominance for verbal tasks but of an inconsistent right hemisphere dominance for visuospatial tasks obtained in an earlier study [13], in which TCD measurement had been restricted to the middle cerebral arteries, was confirmed. At the same time, it could be demonstrated that the failure to find the expected right hemisphere dominance for tasks of spatial visual

Cerebral blood flow velocity pattern in healthy and asphyxiated newborns: a controlled study.

In a controlled study serial determinations of cerebral blood flow velocity using Doppler ultrasound and repeated real-time ultrasonographic- or computerized axial tomographic studies of the brain were performed in 17 (nearly) full-term newborns who experienced perinatal asphyxia and in 17 healthy matched controls during the first week of life. A higher cerebral blood flow velocity was found during the first 4 days of life, indicating a lower cerebrovascular resistance in the asphyxiated infants compared to the control infants. These haemodynamic changes coincided with cerebral oedema and neur

The flow index provides a comprehensive assessment of erectile dysfunction by combining blood flow velocity and vascular diameter.

Dynamic duplex sonography (DUS) is not comprehensive in the evaluation of arteriogenic erectile dysfunction (ED). We introduced a new parameter, the flow index (FI), into the assessment of arteriogenic ED. A retrospective review of a prospective database was conducted. Patients undergoing DUS and pelvic computed tomography angiography for the evaluation of ED were included. The FI was calculated from peak systolic velocity (PSV) and the percentages of pelvic arterial (PLA) stenosis. Correlations between PSV, PLA stenosis, the FI, and erectile function were calculated. Eighty-three patients wer
