The British journal of psychiatry : the journal of mental science2025eng
BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are severe psychiatric conditions associated with high mortality rates, particularly among young people. These disorders often co-occur with self-harm and suicidal ideation, yet the temporal dynamics between these variables remain poorly understood.
AIMS: This study aims to elucidate the longitudinal associations between symptoms of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, self-harm and suicidal ideation using structural equation modelling.
METHOD: Repeated measures of these phenotypes were used to construct a hypothetical model that includes cross-path analys

OBJECTIVE: Although the prevalence of disordered eating is maximum in high-income countries, the most significant rise occurred in East Asia and South Asia over the last three decades. Body dissatisfaction and disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) are more common than full-blown eating disorders. The cognitive distortion leading to these manifestations mainly occurs during adolescence and early adulthood. In this study, we assess the burden of DEBs in a cohort of Indian adolescents and determine their correlation with body dissatisfaction, calorie intake, and clinicosocial determinants.

BACKGROUND: Elevated depressive symptoms are observed in a significant number of youth with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and have been linked to illness stigma and social isolation. Body image dissatisfaction is an understudied variable in the pediatric IBD literature that may be related to both stigma and social difficulties. It is suspected that, due to the stigmatizing nature of IBD, some youth may feel self-conscious about their body image, which contributes to decreased feelings of social belongingness and ultimately depressive symptoms. The current study tested an illness stigma→ bod

Growing empirical evidence has identified specific psychological and contextual risk factors associated with problematic smartphone use (PSU). However, the potential direct and indirect impact of childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) on PSU remains largely unexplored, despite the established role of CEM in the onset of other excessive, problematic, and addictive behaviors. Consequently, the purpose of the present study was to test the direct and indirect relationships of emotional abuse and neglect (two facets of CEM) with PSU via specific mediational pathways including body image dissatisfac

OBJECTIVES: Previous research suggests potential moderating roles of dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility in the association between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating. However, relevant research is mainly conducted on adult women from Western countries, and limited evidence exists for adolescent samples, especially from non-Western contexts (e.g., China). Thus, this study aimed to examine the moderating roles of dispositional mindfulness and body image flexibility in the relationship between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating in Chinese adolescents.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a life-threatening condition in which temperament, anxiety, depression, and core AN body-related psychopathology (drive for thinness, DT, and body dissatisfaction, BD) are intertwined. This relationship has not been to date disentangled; therefore, we performed a multiple mediation analysis aiming to quantify the effect of each component.
METHODS: An innovative multiple mediation statistical method has been applied to data from 184 inpatients with AN completing: Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire, Eating Disorders

OBJECTIVE: Despite research findings that transgender individuals have higher rates of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating than their cisgender peers, reasons for greater eating pathology remain unclear. We propose a Misgendering-Congruence Process by which being misgendered (i.e., labeled a gender other than that with which one identifies) could lead transgender individuals to feel greater incongruence between their bodies and internal identities, which in turn leads to body dissatisfaction and efforts to bring one's body in line with one's identified gender by engaging in weight and s

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction is an important factor for the etiology and maintenance of eating disorders such as bulimia nervosa (BN). At the behavioral level, body dissatisfaction often manifests itself in excessive body-related avoidance, thought to act as a negative reinforcer. The Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT) is an implicit measure of avoidance behavior, but the literature on body-related avoidance measured by the AAT is inconclusive. In the present study, we considered self-reference and cognitive load as important dimensions to better understand AAT-evoked biases.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid development of society, teenagers have more access to individuals with perfect bodies and are becoming more concerned about their body image. Currently, few studies assess body image and eating disorders comprehensively in China. Given the seriousness of these issues, there is an urgent need to understand the current state of body image and eating behaviors among Chinese people and formulate preventive strategies.
METHODS: In this study, 1711 college students between 17 and 23 years old in southern China completed relevant anthropometric measurements, essential info

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the mediating role of body dissatisfaction between Body Mass Index (BMI) and subsequent disordered eating (e.g. dieting and restricting/purging) among early adolescent African American girls.
STUDY DESIGN: Participants included 701 African American girls in 6th and 7th grades in urban schools serving low-income communities, mean age 12.15 (SD = 0.72) years. Participants were assessed at baseline and approximately 6 months later. Objectively measured height and weight were used to calculate BMI z-score. Participants completed questionnaires on body size dissatisf

Body dissatisfaction is a relevant aspect in both eating disorders and sexuality. Using Stice's model, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between these variables in eating disorder patients compared with healthy controls. Statistically significant correlations between body dissatisfaction and sexuality were found in the whole sample. The clinical group had higher rates of body dissatisfaction and sexual impairment. Within the clinical group, the participants with a greater drive for thinness showed higher sexual dysfunctions. These results suggest that sexuality should be systematic

A link between perfectionism and disordered eating has been documented in previous studies. The purpose of the current study was to expand our knowledge of the specific role of perfectionism in disordered eating by examining perfectionism as a mediator or a moderator in the relation between body dissatisfaction and disordered eating (assessed using the EAT-26 and its subscales, and the Binge Scale). We sampled a large ethnically diverse sample of university women (N=520) using two measures of perfectionism: the Eating Disorder Inventory Perfectionism subscale (EDI-P) and the Multidimensional P

PURPOSE: Body weight dissatisfaction (BWD) and visual body perception are specific aspects that can influence the own body image, and that can concur with the development or the maintenance of specific psychopathological dimensions of different psychiatric disorders. The sexual orientation is a fundamental but understudied aspect in this field, and, for this reason, the purpose of this study is to improve knowledge about the relationships among BWD, visual body size-perception, and sexual orientation.
METHODS: A total of 1033 individuals participated in an online survey. Physical comparison,

Thinking negatively about one's appearance may be a major source of unhappiness. It was investigated whether the habitual quality of negative body image thinking constitutes an additional vulnerability factor, i.e. when such thinking is repetitive and automatic. The cognitive content of negative body image thinking ('what') was distinguished from the habitual occurrence of such thinking ('how'). The mental habit component uniquely predicted explicit as well as implicit body dissatisfaction (the latter measured by an implicit association test) over and above cognitive content. Mental habit also

Reduction in food intake is an important feature of eating disorders (EDs). However, whereas self-reported cognitive control over food (i.e., dietary restraint) is commonly assessed, we are not aware of any study evaluating the actual reduction in caloric intake (i.e., caloric restriction, CR) and its relationships with psychopathological, clinical, and anamnestic factors in individuals with EDs. In this study, we quantified caloric intake, CR, and weight suppression in 225 ED inpatients and explored significant relationships with self-reported eating symptoms, body dissatisfaction, body avoid

Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people face disproportionately high risk for body image concerns and disordered eating/eating disorders. However, strong explanatory models that integrate risk and protective factors specific to this population remain limited. This study addressed this gap through a systematic review of literature on body image concerns and disordered eating among TGD people. A systematic search identified 79 studies, with sample sizes ranging from single case studies to 3388 participants. Factors examined were grouped into sociocultural influences, stigma and discriminatio

OBJECTIVES: Disordered eating and compulsive exercise behaviours are common among athletes and can increase the risk of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs). Contrarily, the prevalence of muscle dysmorphia and its relationship with REDs are unknown. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate associations of all three with REDs symptoms.
METHODS: Elite and subelite Icelandic athletes (n=83, 67.5% females) answered the Low Energy Availability in Females/Males Questionnaires (LEAF-Q/LEAM-Q), Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire Short (EDE-QS), Exercise Addiction Inventory (EAI) and
