Unusual distributions of body fat in AIDS patients: a review of adverse events reported to the Food and Drug Administration.

This report summarizes postmarketing adverse events reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that describe unusual or abnormal fat distribution in association with anti-retroviral therapies. Reports associated will protease inhibitors were compared to those associated with non-protease inhibitor antiretroviral therapies. The Spontaneous Reporting System (SRS) and Adverse Event Reporting System (AERS) of the FDA MEDWATCH post-marketing surveillance system served as the database. Four protease inhibitors (saquinavir, indinavir, nelfinavir, and ritonavir) and seven nonprotease inhibitor

Association of body fat distribution and family histories of breast and ovarian cancer with risk of postmenopausal breast cancer.

The authors recently published data from a prospective cohort study of postmenopausal women (N Engl J Med 1992;326:1323-9) which suggested that a high waist/hip ratio was associated with a significantly increased risk of breast cancer in women with a positive family history of breast cancer. Since families with aggregations of breast and ovarian cancer demonstrate more consistent genetic linkage to markers on chromosome 17q than do families with breast cancer alone, the authors performed additional analyses to examine whether the previously observed associations with waist/hip ratio differed w

Adiponectin Predicts High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol Efflux Capacity in Adults Irrespective of Body Mass Index and Fat Distribution.

CONTEXT: Obesity is associated with hypoadiponectemia, dyslipidemia, and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Mechanisms linking these conditions remain to be fully understood. Cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) is a crucial functional property of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) that strongly predicts CVD incidence. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether age, fat distribution, and other obesity-related factors affect CEC in juvenile and adult overweight/obese participants of the STYJOBS/EDECTA cohort (NCT00482924). DESIGN: We performed an observational study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: CEC

Abnormalities of body fat distribution in HIV-infected persons treated with antiretroviral drugs: The Swiss HIV Cohort Study.

We prospectively assessed the 1-month prevalence of abnormal body fat distribution in HIV-infected individuals. Of 1,359 patients treated with antiretroviral drugs, 578 (43%) had signs of abnormal fat distribution. Peripheral fat loss was observed in 382 patients (28%), whereas 412 (30%) had signs of fat accumulation. The presence of lipodystrophy (peripheral fat loss with or without fat accumulation) was found to be independently associated with increasing age (less than 35 years of age as a reference group: 35 to 41 years of age, OR = 1.5 [95% CI, 1.1-2.3]; and older than 41 years of age, OR

Oestrogen and progestogen hormone replacement therapy for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women: weight and body fat distribution.

BACKGROUND: Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is commonly prescribed to treat menopausal symptoms and to prevent post-menopausal bone loss. However, many women are concerned about hormonal replacement therapy because they believe that such treatment will result in weight gain. The effect of HRT on weight and body fat distribution has not yet been examined in systematic reviews. It is an important topic since many women decline oestrogen therapy due to their concerns about resultant weight gain, and thus forego its potential therapeutic benefits. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of unopposed

Association between muscle mass and diabetes prevalence independent of body fat distribution in adults under 50 years old.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Although relatively less muscle mass has been associated with greater diabetes prevalence, whether there is an association between muscle mass and diabetes prevalence independent of body fat distribution is unknown. The objective was to determine whether less skeletal muscle mass is associated with greater diabetes prevalence in young men and women independent of body fat distribution. SUBJECTS/METHODS: One thousand seven hundred and sixty-four adults, aged 20-49 years old, from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2006). Body composi

Meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies for body fat distribution in 694 649 individuals of European ancestry.

More than one in three adults worldwide is either overweight or obese. Epidemiological studies indicate that the location and distribution of excess fat, rather than general adiposity, are more informative for predicting risk of obesity sequelae, including cardiometabolic disease and cancer. We performed a genome-wide association study meta-analysis of body fat distribution, measured by waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI), and identified 463 signals in 346 loci. Heritability and variant effects were generally stronger in women than men, and we found approximately

Relationship between soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE), body composition and fat distribution in healthy women.

PURPOSE: Soluble receptor for advanced glycation end products (sRAGE) is a decoy receptor which sequesters RAGE ligands and acts as a cytoprotective agent. To date, it is unclear whether the lower sRAGE levels observed in obesity are a marker of increased overall adiposity or reflect increases in particular fat depots. Therefore, we evaluated in healthy women the relationship among sRAGE and indicators of adiposity, including abdominal visceral (VAT) and epicardial visceral (EAT) adipose tissues, to explore the potential role of sRAGE as an earlier biomarker of cardiometabolic risk. METHODS:

The effect of gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog treatment (leuprolide) on body fat distribution in idiopathic central precocious puberty.

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analog (GnRHa) therapy is used in idiopathic central precocious puberty (ICPP) worldwide. It has also been shown that during this therapy, body mass index (BMI) increases slightly as a side effect. We investigated the side effects of GnRHa treatment in ICPP on body composition and insulin resistance (IR). Twenty girls (7.55 +/- 1.02 y) with ICPP were treated with GnRHa (leuprolide) for an average of 20.83 +/- 4.8 months. Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) was used to measure the body's fat balance. Nine patients out of 20 (45%) had significant gain weight. We

Effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma 2 Pro12Ala polymorphism on body fat distribution in female Korean subjects.

The effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma 2 (PPAR gamma 2) Pro12Ala (P12A) polymorphism on body mass index (BMI) and type 2 diabetes are well documented; however, until now, only a few studies have evaluated the effects of this polymorphism on body fat distribution. This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of this polymorphism on computed tomography (CT)-measured body fat distribution and other obesity-related parameters in Korean female subjects. The frequencies of PPAR gamma 2 genotypes were: PP type, 93.0%; PA type, 6.8%; and AA type, 0.2%. The frequency of th

Beta-endorphin response to exogenous corticotrophin-releasing hormone in obese women with different patterns of body fat distribution.

Obese individuals may be characterized by higher than normal basal and stimulated beta-endorphin plasma concentrations, which suggests an increased activity of the opioid system. This study was carried out to investigate whether the regulation of beta-endorphin secretion may be different in different phenotypes of obesity. Twenty-two obese women (body mass index greater than 30 kg/m2) without other endocrine and metabolic abnormalities were investigated. A group of seven normal weight healthy women matched for age served as controls. According to the protocol, obese women included in the study

Regional airway fat distribution and its association with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome severity in pugs with varying body condition.

Obesity is a recognised risk factor for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in pugs; however, the mechanisms linking obesity to BOAS remain unclear. Previous veterinary studies have primarily focused on tongue fat, with limited evaluation of other airway regions. This study aimed to investigate the associations between body condition score (BCS) and regional airway fat, and their relationship with BOAS functional grades. Client-owned pugs undergoing BOAS assessment and pre-operative head and neck computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. Fat volumes within the tongue (T), pharynx (

Association between body fat distribution and female stress urinary incontinence: a cross-sectional study with the NHANES 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: The android to gynoid ratio (A/G ratio) reflects the distribution of abdominal fat relative to gluteofemoral fat and may affect stress urinary incontinence (SUI) by increasing pelvic floor load due to elevated intra-abdominal pressure. However, its direct relationship with SUI remains uncertain. The aim of this study was to explore whether a higher A/G ratio is linked to increased SUI prevalence in American women aged ≥20 years. METHODS: This cross-sectional analysis used data from 5,309 women aged ≥20 years in the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES

Imprinting of female offspring with testosterone results in insulin resistance and changes in body fat distribution at adult age in rats.

In women, a relative hyperandrogenicity is statistically associated with insulin resistance and centralization of body fat, which are predictors for the development of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of androgenization of newborn female rats on insulin sensitivity at adult age. To mimic the neonatal androgen peak normally observed in male rats, female pups were administered one high dose of testosterone (T) subcutaneously within 3 h after birth. They were then given back to their mothers and followed to adult age. At the end of the week

Overfeeding-induced weight gain elicits decreases in sex hormone-binding globulin in healthy males-Implications for body fat distribution.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity and upper-body fat elevates cardiometabolic risk. However, mechanisms predisposing to upper-body fat accumulation are not completely understood. In males, low testosterone (T) frequently associates with obesity, and estrogen deficiency may contribute to upper-body adiposity. This study examines the effects of overfeeding-induced weight gain on changes in gonadal hormones in healthy males and its association with regional fat depots. METHODS: Twenty-five males (age: 29.7 ± 6.9 years; BMI: 24.7 ± 3.1 kg/m2 ) were overfed for 8 weeks to gain approximately 5% body weight. Chang

Prenatal pesticide exposure and PON1 genotype associated with adolescent body fat distribution evaluated by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Many modern pesticides have endocrine disrupting abilities and early-life exposure may affect growth and disease risk later in life. Previously, we reported associations between prenatal pesticide exposure and higher childhood body fat content measured by anthropometry. The associations were affected by child PON1 Q192R genotype. We aimed to study whether prenatal pesticide exposure was still associated with body fat content and distribution in the children at puberty and the potential impact of both maternal and child PON1 Q192R genotype. In this prospective cohort study of 247 children born
