Prediction of plantar soft tissue stiffness based on sex, age, bodyweight, height and body mass index.

15% of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients suffer high risk of ulceration and 85% of the amputation involving DM population is caused by non-healing ulcers. These findings elucidate the fact that foot ulcer can result in major amputation especially to the DM and elderly population. Therefore, early diagnosis of abnormally stiffened plantar soft tissue is needed to prevent the catastrophic tissue damage. In order to differentiate between normal and pathological tissues, a threshold reference value that defines healthy tissue is required. The objective of this study is to perform a multivariate anal

Deep learning model for body weight estimation from computed tomography scout images incorporating sex and height.

Accurate body weight measurement is essential for determining the appropriate dose of contrast agent in contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) examinations. However, in emergency medicine, obtaining accurate measurements is often challenging, which can lead to over- or underdosing of contrast medium. Therefore, we aimed to develop and evaluate a deep learning model that estimates body weight using chest-abdominal CT scout images, sex, and height. We retrospectively analyzed the data of 763 hospitalized patients whose CT examination dates matched their weight-measurement dates. This dataset

Fat-free mass mediates the association between body mass and jump height in healthy young adults.

BACKGROUND: The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a reliable and valid test of lower-extremity (LE) muscle power and neuromuscular performance. Body mass is positively associated with CMJ performance in young adults, warranting the examination of the influence of body composition on jump height (JH). This study examined the mediation effects of body composition on CMJ performance in young adults. The hypothesis was that fat-free mass and percent fat mass would significantly mediate the association between body mass with JH in young adults. METHODS: Healthy young adults (N.=81; 47 female; mean age

Cutaneous malignant melanoma: association with height, weight and body-surface area. a prospective study in Norway.

To investigate whether anthropometric indices as body height, body-mass index (BMI) and body-surface area (BSA) have any influence on the risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), we analyzed height and weight data from a Norwegian screening survey running between 1963 and 1975 and comprising 1.3 million individuals followed for 14 to 26 years. Among females, CMM was diagnosed in 2814 incident cases, while the number among males was 2144 during 22,988,345 person-years of follow-up. With adjustment for age, birth cohort, geographic region and BMI, the risk for CMM increased significantly with

Body height, body composition, and lifestyle of Czech high school students: implications for the most appropriate strategies supporting physical growth and preventing obesity.

BACKGROUND: This study summarizes anthropometric research that was conducted in two phases between 2015 and 2023. The aim of the first phase (2015-2016) was to map the current status of the height trend among adult high school students in the South Moravian region (the Brno-City District). The aim of the second phase (2016-2023) was to map the status of the height trend in three neighboring regions (Olomouc, Vysočina, Zlín) and to examine the relationship between body height, body composition, and some aspects of the students' lifestyle. METHODS: The study population consisted of 4655 individ

The influence of sex, age, and body height on the pulmonary vascular permeability index - a prospective observational study.

The pulmonary vascular permeability index (PVPI) is a quotient of the extravascular lung water (EVLW) and the pulmonary blood volume (PBV). In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the alveolar-capillary membrane integrity is disrupted. The result is a disproportionate increase of EVLW compared to the PBV and, hence, an increase in PVPI. Thus, PVPI has repetitively been discussed to extend the definition of ARDS. Besides sex, the influence of other anthropometric variables on PVPI has not been studied so far. However, since it is known that EVLW depends on body height and sex, we hypothe

The impact of hygienic living conditions on the differentiation of male body height at the beginning of the twentieth century in the USSR.

BACKGROUND: The positive changes in hygienic living conditions are commonly believed to explain secular changes in body height and the age of maturity. However, it is difficult to estimate the separate impacts of these factors due to the lack of social and economic data and variations in the sources of information. We hypothesized that final male body height could be associated with various socioeconomic indicators, such as the development of the medical care system, the quality of nutrition, and the level of sanitary and hygienic conditions. Moreover, we hypothesized that male body height cou

Influences of sex chromosome aneuploidy on height, weight, and body mass index in human childhood and adolescence.

Sex chromosome aneuploidies (SCAs) are collectively common conditions caused by carriage of a sex chromosome dosage other than XX for females and XY for males. Increases in sex chromosome dosage (SCD) have been shown to have an inverted-U association with height, but we lack combined studies of SCA effects on height and weight, and it is not known if any such effects vary with age. Here, we study norm-derived height and weight z-scores in 177 youth spanning 8 SCA karyotypes (XXX, XXY, XYY, XXXX, XXXY, XXYY, XXXXX, and XXXXY). We replicate a previously described inverted-U association between m

Associations of height, weight, and body mass index with handgrip strength: A Bayesian comparison in older adults.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Handgrip strength is commonly normalized or stratified by body size to define subgroup-specific cut-points and reference limits values. However, it remains unclear which anthropometric variable is most strongly associated with handgrip strength. We aimed to, in older adults with no self-reported mobility limitations, determine whether height, weight, and body mass index (BMI) were meaningfully associated with handgrip strength. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included community-dwelling ambulant participants, and we identified 775 older adults who reported no difficulty

Growth in achondroplasia: Development of height, weight, head circumference, and body mass index in a European cohort.

As growth references for achondroplasia are limited to reports from United States, Japan, Argentina, and Australia, the aim of this study was to construct growth references for height, weight, head circumference, and body mass index (BMI) from a European cohort of children with achondroplasia and to discuss the development of these anthropometric variables. A mix of cross-sectional and longitudinal, retrospective, and prospective data from 466 children with achondroplasia and 4,375 measuring occasions were modeled with generalized additive model for location, scale and shape (GAMLSS) to sex-sp

Role of the waist/height ratio in the cardiometabolic risk assessment of children classified by body mass index.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the utility of waist/height ratio (WHtR) in the specification of cardiometabolic risk in children already stratified by body mass index (BMI). BACKGROUND: Reflective of its association with cardiometabolic risk, BMI is a commonly used indirect indicator of adiposity in children. The WHtR, a marker of central adiposity, has been advocated as a possibly superior indicator of cardiometabolic risk. METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis of 5 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2008 (ages 5 to 18 years of age). The BMI perce

The impact of visual flow stimulation on anxiety, dizziness, and body sway in individuals with and without fear of heights.

Individuals with acrophobia experience anxiety and dizziness when exposed to heights. It may be that their balance system is disturbed and that they therefore have to rely more strongly on visual information. We tested this hypothesis by exposing 20 individuals with high fear of heights and 20 healthy control participants to nine different visual flow stimuli through a head mounted display, thereby inducing a conflict between visual input and somatosensory information. Anxiety and dizziness were assessed repeatedly by means of self-reports, while resultant body sway was measured continuously w

Body mass index, height and risk of adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus and gastric cardia: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In the last decades, the incidence of oesophageal and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma has increased rapidly in the Western world. We investigated the association between body mass index (BMI), height and risk of oesophageal and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma. METHODS: The Netherlands Cohort Study was initiated in 1986. All participants (n = 120,852), aged 55-69 years, completed a self administered questionnaire. Cases were identified through annual record linkage with the Netherlands Cancer Registry. After 13.3 years of follow-up, excluding the first follow-up year, complete data fro

Breast-cancer incidence in relation to height, weight and body-fat distribution in the Dutch "DOM" cohort.

In a cohort of 11,663 participants in a breast-cancer screening program, height, weight, waist circumference and hip circumference were measured, and information about menstrual and reproductive history was obtained by questionnaire. After exclusion of 83 women with unclear menopausal status, the subjects were divided into 3 sub-cohorts: 5,891 women who were pre-menopausal at the time of data collection, 3,521 women who had entered the study after natural menopause, and 2068 women who had been hysterectomized and/or ovariectomized. After a median follow-up of 10.6 years, 147, 76 and 52 inciden

Weight, height and body mass index in the prognosis of breast cancer: early results of a prospective study.

The hypothesis that obesity plays a role in the prognosis of breast cancer is examined in this preliminary analysis of a follow-up study of 472 early-stage breast cancer patients. The 75th percentile values of weight (= 73 kg) and body mass index (BMI = 28) in the total patient population were taken as the cut points for estimating overweight or "obesity". Stratified, survival, and logistic regression analyses showed that increased weight or BMI, but not height, were associated with increased risk recurrence. In the logistic regression analysis, after accounting for other risk factors, stage I

Congenital malformation of the feet with low body height. A new syndrome, caused by an autosomal dominant gene.

Among 75 members of a Danish family, 12 were found with a syndrome not previously described. Clinically, the syndrome consists of low body height and rigid flat feet, with weight-bearing pain in the feet. Radiologically, the deformation of the feet is a medial synostosis between the talus and the calcaneus combined with ankle joint dysplasia. The cause of the syndrome is most probably an autosomal dominant gene with complete penetrance. No linkage was found of the gene to 18 marker genes.

MODERATING EFFECT OF BODY HEIGHT ON THE ASSOCIATION OF BODY WEIGHT AND DISABILITY CAUSED BY NON SPECIFIC CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN IN WOMEN AND MEN.

The aim of the study was testing the hypothesis that body height has a moderating effect on the association of weight and chronic low back pain (LBP) induced disability, and that this moderating effect is different in women and men. We performed a nested cross-sectional analysis using data collected at baseline in a prospective cohort study conducted in 2008-2009 at a special hospital for medical rehabilitation in Croatia. The outcome was the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) score. The independent variable was body weight. The focal moderators were body height and sex. The moderat
